I haven’t seen the show yet and I generally try to go into shows completely blind. That being said I’m curious to hear the style of music for this one in advance of seeing it. Is there one song you would recommend I listen to that is fairly “representative”?
Love listening to this. This is my best score winner hands down. Despite being firmly “contemporary” musical theater, it is probably the most “traditional” of all the best score nominees. I think in a season that has both a play with music and a dance musical stealing people’s hearts, Tony voters will choose this best score as a nod to the more traditional “book” musical.
I can't seem to find the song with Jenn Colela's high notes towards the end of the song....is it SHE AND I? If it is, then it's much better live than on record.
Just read through this article on Playbill where Shaina talks a bit about the process for writing/rewriting each song and thought it really interesting to see how she (and her collaborators) came up with the changes they needed.

Thanks, you're right, it is This Girl...I just remember it being more impressive to hear in person.

hmm, YES this is the one - it was definitely after the "fire" scene. The "what do you sayyyyyy" is the line I was looking for. This is one of the best moments in the show. Thanks :)

Having listened to this through a few times now, I can confidently say this is my Best Score winner. It's somehow the only one of the five nominees that feels like an actual musical score. It's great, and makes me want to see a show that I had no interest in before.
Did the cover art change for anyone else on Apple Music? I swear when the full album was released it had the same cover as the Keep Marching single with the image of the suffragists at the top and it didn't say "Original Broadway Cast Recording" and now it's updated to just the SUFFS logo on the purple background with no suffragists and it says "Original Broadway Cast Recording." Am I misremembering?
I don’t think so? I have been listening since the Apple Music release and always recall it having looked as follows:
I do know what art you’re talking about - the Keep Marching EP is still available for streaming separately with it. But they are two separate albums and AFAIK the “OBCR” art was attributed to the actual cast recording the day the full album was added to Apple Music.
I’m probably just misremembering. I recall thinking it was weird that the artwork didn’t say “Original Broadway Cast Recording” but I might be thinking of the artwork for the Keep Marching single.
A sidenote but for all the fantastic keyart out there this season, Suffs ranks lower on the list for me personally. The purple and gold with the textured look is pretty, but the actual key art feels a bit blank/suffers from too much negative space. I don’t think the women marching at the top fills enough of it. I always think to myself it would make so much sense to overlay some flames/sparks coming up from the bottom cut of the artwork — that way it adds some more visual interest, matches the “when there isn’t a trail, blaze one” tagline, and is a subtle nod to the particularly large climactic moment in Act 2.
Aaaaand, that way when we see the art on the marquee and on the Apple Music interface, the sparking fire can have some cool looping animations that you see on most other albums/artwork these days :)
