yea i commented there, it was like when Shoshana first went on for Idina. there's a better picture over there as well. I say cut her some slack. How long did it take to get Shoshana fans and please the wicked fans? Some still are not pleased. It's going to take a while.
A dancer might dream to see her name in lights and mean it,
but all she really dreams is to make someone
else feel the way she did when she first saw a dancer.
And that is so beautiful-Anonymous
thanks for trying but that doesn't really help haha...I'm on her fansite (shoshanabeanonline.com) and on the message boards but still can't find any review...a link or directions or posting it here would be awesome!! asap
Im sure she did well. I mean you have to got be nervous goin on for the first time in one of the most popular shows on Broadway. How can that NOT be nerve-racking?
i was at the matinee too... i agree with a lot of that review. i'm not a shoshana/idina/saycon or anyone fan... just look at the talent. Saycon can sing, there's no doubt about that. But her acting did leave much to be desired.
This just seems odd. Her acting was dead on in Aida. So saying it was bad is surprising. I'll assume the reviewer was biased coupled with the fact that it was her first time. Plus I saw Aida after she was the standby for awhile. She was settled and comfortable in the role.

I don't doubt a lot of it was the nerves. But I've seen better acting from Drew Lachey in RENT (and thats nothing to rave about). She seemed to be trying to hard to make sure the audience knew every single emotion her character was SUPPOSED to be feeling, and less concerned with actually acting. She just struck me as trying too hard in a lot of the scenes. Many times it was a tad too over the top for my enjoyment, but that is just my opionion.
Again. I do not doubt she has talent. She most definitely CAN sing and I enjoyed all of the songs she sang very much. I agree that Shoshana also wasn't especially impressive in the acting department the first time she went on, so i really believe Saycon will show a lot of improvement and I'd love to see her a few months from now and see how she's doing with the role then.
Okay, it sounds like i'm being too hard on her. For those of you who weren't there, she was very good. She's a very talented girl and I think she'll go far. She looked gorgeous in the Act 2 make-up and with some improvement and more practice, i'd really enjoy seeing her in the role again.
Do standbys have to be like the person who is supposed to be playing the part? For example should Saycon have Shoshana's portrayal of Elphaba and try to act like her or can she do her own thing? Does that make any sense?
An actor who is an understudy/ standby doesn't have to act/ sing like the person they are covering. The producers cast them to portray the character the way that they, individually, felt the character should be portrayed.
For example: Caren Lyn Manuel is the understudy for "maureen" in rent (usually played by kelly karbacz (sp)), and they are VERY VERY different, but both incredible.
awkward.

I SAW SAYCON TODAY!!! SHE WAS AMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZING! HER VOICE WAS OFF THE HOOK AND HER PORTRAYAL OF ELPHABA WAS SO INVOLVED AND WONDERFUL! CONGRATS TO HER!!!!
Andy, get your butt in gear. I gotta go to bed soon!
