Do shows need to not need to not need to not need to go to Broadway?

Yes. No. Exactly.

Let's stop this here. Thanks

Nice! The London production with this cast will certainly have its own quirky style. Also can’t wait.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Really impressed by this cast, was concerned they would fall short of the NY cast. Is Jesse playing the Bishop, or Jeremy Shamos’ role?

I would guess Jesse as Jeremy Shamos’ role, Krakowsi in Rachel Bay Jones’ role and Plimpton in Amber Gray’s? Seems like a waste of Martha Plimpton though.

Jesse has to be playing the priest right?  You really do need a comic actor for that role.  Fleischman is the himbo soldier and Paulo in the Pasquale role?

Yes these were my thoughts too. I can’t imagine anyone but Jesse could be in the priest role. Krakowski is going to be amazing as Marianne. Plimpton in the Amber Gray role for sure, Paulo will be brilliant in the Pasquale role, Dornford-May as Fritzi. Not sure of the Shamos/Cannavale roles?

I think Rory Kinnear was originally announced as the Bobby Canavale role? I think it makes more sense for Jesse Tyler Ferguson as the Bishop and Harry Hadden-Patton as the Jeremy Shamos role, but that could be reversed.

Funny, my first thought was Plimpton in the Micaela Diamond role which, I know was a lot younger but just seemed more fitting.

With no disrepect to the New York cast, with many more recognizable TV/film names and faces, there's no way this won't be filmed for NTL. I'd love that, if so, and this is a cast worthy of a London cast album, too. (Even all the "is it a musical or not?" aside. lol.) Would love to see this cast! I also hope this means Nick Hern Books (which I think publsihes a lot of the playtexts for NT shows) will be releasing the script.

I need to see 54 year old Plimpton as Fritz.

I just hope it will be a success and maybe we can have this show back in NY for a limited Broadway run with a mixed and matched casts from both production.

I ADORE Jane Krakowski and she is such sublime casting for Marianne! It will be tough to live up to Rachel Bay Jones impeccable performance (truly one of my absolute favorites of 2023). But, it's hard to think of someone, besides Jones, as perfect for this role as Krakowski.

I really hope they film this. I need to see Jane Krakowski as Marianne.

Rachel Bay Jones was so perfect as Marianne, one of my favorite performances of any year. But Krakowski seems like a wonderful fit for the role. It’s an impressive cast overall.

Rory Kinnear is Paul?! That is odd.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson as the Bishop doesn’t do it for me. David Hyde Pierce was just so perfect I really just can’t imagine Ferguson in the role.

Richard Fleeshman is Leo? That’s surprising.

Is this a definitive casting list?  Rory Kinnear is a huge and respected London theatre star (now doing TV as well) and Paul is the most nothing of the roles in the show, I can't quite imagine Rory doing his first musical since his marvelous staring role as Mac the Knife...doing Paul....

So sorry - I posted that last night without context. I’m just speculating. Made some changes after feedback. I think Paulo could be Leo. Don’t know who Rafael would be. Could see Rory as the Bishop but don’t know where Harry would go.

Confirmed
Man - Denis O’Hare
Woman - Tracie Bennett

Pretty Certain
Marianne - Jane Krakowski
Fritz - Chumisa Dornford-May
Claudia - Martha Plimton

Speculating
Leo - Rory Kinnear
Paul - Jesse Tyler Ferguson
Rafael - Paulo Szot
Bishop - Harry Hadden-Paton
Soldier - Richard Fleeshman
Colonel Martin - Cameron Johnson
