"As to the point ofwhythey’re smoking: it’s set in the 70’s and everyone smoked cigarettes, weed, or both. Especially rockstars. It’s authentic, even if you think it’s gross."
I lived the 1970s with the smoking that killed (cancer, emphysema), maimed (COPD, heart disease), and sickened (bronchitis. Father had one-fourth of one lung functioning when he died of emphysema from 4 packs/day. My siblings and me got chronic bronchitis from 2nd hand smoke. Knew folks who contracted lung cancer from 2nd hand smoke. The health crisis got so bad 40+ states sued tobacco companies for billions to offset health costs. It also banned advertising and smoking indoors.
We've had decades of shows that were successful without smoking even though the show covered time periods when smoking was prevalent. As for weed, folks didn't openly toke like today. It was criminal possession if caught with it. Sadly, production companies mistakenly think the smoke is harmless.
It smells badly. It also has the same tar and other toxic chemicals that tobacco has. The smaller theaters like Helen Hayes and Golden don't have the ventilation systems that the larger Schubert theaters do. Even the head usher at HH (Mother's Play) said the whole theater "stunk" by the show's end. It even billowed out the SD when it opened. House manager at HH said alot of folks complained about the smoke during the Cottage.
It's not good for cast and crew, especially singers. Hold cig; just don't light it. No one would notice if it wasn't there at all.
