"Academy Award winners Kevin Kline and Meryl Steep — both veterans of New York Shakespeare Festival — will play the famous balcony scene of Romeo and Juliet as the Shakespeare classic's title characters in a gala benefit staged reading June 18 at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.
Daniel Sullivan will direct the performance that celebrates to the day The Public Theater's 50-year anniversary of producing Shakespeare in the outdoor venue."
Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline Will Be Romeo and Juliet in Gala Marking 50 Years of Shakespeare at Delacorte
$1,500..... if I sell my body for $50 on the street for the next 30 days maybe I can afford to see Meryl Streep!
They're both way too old. The producers should definitely go age appropriate, or at least closer to it. I'd cast Lea Michele and Corey Monteith.
^ But but but.... you want the ending to seem tragic, right?
^hilarious! As this is a one night only lark of an event, not production casting, I think it's great fun, and not at all objectionable, to see Streep and Kline as Juliet and Romeo.

For how long can you legally pitch a tent at 79th and CPW?
Mostly joking.

Wow, this sounds amazing, Streep and Kline have so much chemistry, I'd love to see this
And for the price of admission you get gauze contact lenses with vaseline eye solution! Then you STILL have to squint!

Dang. If only I had $1,500 to spare.

I'd kinda rather see Patti and Kev.
Either way, the sex with an underage minor thing has always been troubling about R&J, kudos to The Public for dispensing with that.
Can they get Jamie Lee Curtis to play the balcony?
I'd kinda rather see Patti and Kev.
A friend and I were just discussing this, and laughing at how hilarious Patti's Juliet would've been at any point in her life.
The starting price of $1,500 makes this whole event sound something like a cruel evening of forcing two elderly Chihuahuas to jump through fiery hoops for a degenerate aristocracy...
And really...wouldn't it have been faaaaar more fun to have them take on Beatrice and Benedict?
Obviously, Mandy would have to be Patti's Romeo.
Kline's already done Benedict (and very well).
For a one-night staged reading, I think this is divine and an excellent way to celebrate Shakespeare in the Park. No doubt they'll have a roster of other big names for this reading.

Nick Jonas for Montague!
Patti's Juliet would have been interesting.

There would be so much subtext with Kev.
I'd pay $1500 to see ROMEO & JULIET with Patti and Bill Smitrovich.
Christine Pedi as Liza as the Nurse would be divine.
Namo- Kevin Kline can "subtext" me anytime!

He once confused Corine for his wife.
