I like H.E.R. and think her casting is fun, but I hate when these movie musicals shoe-horn in a new song so they can get another Oscar nomination. Especially when it’s not written by the same songwriters as the rest of the score.

Came here to say the exact same thing. Janelle Monae seems like the obvious, and perfect, choice! She started her career in musical theatre and is a proven actress and vocalist.

I'm surprised Erivo isn't locked into this yet unless they're looking for a bigger name for Celie.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

It HAS to be Cynthia right? This to me seems like the situation Ben feels he has with Evan Hansen (that it wouldn’t have been made without him).

With these two announcements this week hopefully we’ll know soon.

I think Erivo sang the hell out of it. I think Fantasia was better. I just don’t find Erivo’s acting nuanced enough…

Say what you want about Erivo…but her acting in this was stupendous.

I really don't think Cynthia will be in this as Celie.

There was a casting breakdown on Actors Access a few months back that seemed to be looking for a newcomer for the role. They were looking for someone 24-30 if I recall. For some reason, I remember the casting description said something about searching for a new face, but I could be mistaken. If they were going with Erivo, I don't think they would have done a casting notice.

Either Cynthia or a complete unknown talent (ala Rachel Zegler) will work for me either way. I just hope the movie will turn out great and not end up like a sad disappointment.
