No prop bags.  Two people in the back row of the orchestra did turn their phone lights on for this.  My guess is callbacks are cool but extra lighting won't be?  (if security said anything it was to those people in the back - the 2 phones were only up for about 1 min).   Those two lights seem to be the die hard Rocky people.

Costumes - no resemblance to the Vogue fashion shoot. I had no issues with costumes, except for Rocky’s. Luke’s lower costume looks unnaturally endowed. Or maybe not…

It even jiggles when he moves 🤣

If you Google it, There are pictures of Luke in a Speedo on the beach, he's definitely packing some heat. 😂

I'm hearing a lot of conflicting things re: callbacks, which is interesting to me. I'm of the mindset that I'd prefer not to have them during a live show, but you can't really stop it, unfortunately.

Aside from Tom's dong looking incredible, I absolutely hate this design. I hate Sam Pinkleton's love of neon in almost everything he does, and I think the design choices, generally speaking, are uninspiring, and I think almost all of the wigs look bad, especially Josh Rivera's. Oof.

I am curious, though - how is Superheroes staged? Can anyone weigh in?

Saw the preview tonight. Luke’s Frank is actually the biggest departure from any traditional production and a welcome one at that. Though I will say it’s certainly not his own interpretation- but he is nailing the take. The production makes a very smart choice that will in fact prevent the curtain call photos and videos from giving too much away. If there is a reason to see this production it’s Frank - and I’m actually quite excited at the chance to see some of the understudies tackle it as well.

As far as the audience participation- it is needed and should be encouraged and embraced. Once they find their footing and perhaps build a loyal fan base of the particular production this could really excel. The production is not - and absolutely should not - discourage call backs. If anything they provide the high and low points of the evening.

Do you happen to know where the band is located for the show?

Agree on nearly all points.

In would say, when the callbacks worked and the cast bought it in it was the highlight of the show.

Personal fave:

”And what of Brad and Janet. What further indignities were they to be subjected to”

”SHOCK TREATMENT!”

Okay. I really needed to sleep on this and process my thoughts because there was a LOT going on last night. In summary, it’s total chaos in ways both good and bad. I know I had my intermission thoughts last night so I’ll elaborate a bit more.

First of all - LUKE EVANS! I was not familiar with your game, sir. That was the most unhinged, sexually vibrant, erotic, vocally powerful Frank I could have imagined. Once he made his entrance, you could feel the entire show immediately gain a life that definitely felt sagging at the start. That whole man gave me some stirring feelings that I don’t think I’ve ever felt before in my life. While he won’t end up the winner, I’m already putting him in the Best Actor Tony race because he damn well deserves it. (And having sat front row - yes, it is big and yes, it’s got some bounce to it)

Dratch as the Narrator was surprisingly pedestrian. She has already shown that she can command a stage and be funny, but it felt like she was mostly just reciting the script and not bringing her own special abilities to it. Her best moments were when she broke the fourth wall to react to the callouts. Hopefully she does grow comfortable with the chaos and leans into it more. Juliette Lewis being sick does give me a little room to give grace for her below-par vocals, but her Usherette didn’t really kick off the show on the highest of notes. It might have been nerves, but I was sitting front row and she looked a little nervous. Once she got into the Magenta character a bit more, I found her to be okay, but nothing spectacular. I think she’s going to be more about the acting than the singing, which is a let down since she really has to match the freak of Amber Gray, who is an inspired choice for Riff Raff, but seem constrained a bit.

Durand and Hsu started off just okay as Brad and Janet and progressively became more unhinged throughout the night in a very good way, especially Hsu. She really went front wilting flower to a whole sexual woman in a way I did not expect and her “Toucha-Toucha-Touch Me” was a highlight for me. Her and Josh (as Rocky) had great chemistry together. Durand gets his biggest moment during “Once In A While”, but I personally was never a fan of that song since I feel like it slows the plot down, and that’s was very much the case last night. I will say that surprise reveal during Frank and Brad’s moment of coitus is something that will stick with me for quite some time.

Josh is talented and certainly nice to look at (even in his terrible nude singlet for a costume), but he doesn’t invoke the Charles Atlas Seal of Approval - which is rather specific. I once again invoked the idea that if they had cast someone like Cameron Loyal, it would’ve been perfect since he and Luke would be roughly the same height and also Cameron, as a bodybuilder, has the perfect physique for Rocky.

Harvey was…not the best. His Eddie was actually quite terrible. His Dr. Scott was…better, but in a “damning with faint praise” way. There seemed to be a lot of odd acting and vocal choices he’s making that just seem discordant and messy. Michaela Jae also has some weird vocals going on. She is basically doing Little Nell on helium and, love her I do, it got REALLY grating after a while because it sounded so thin and reedy.

The set really has exploded all over into Studio 54 and I give Pinkleton and team a lot of credit for the quasi-immersive concept of creating this weird and wild world straight out of a B-Movie, but the choreography felt a bit listless (I wonder why Pinkleton outsourced it to someone else) and I found myself thinking of missed opportunities for the cast to pop out into the audience and make use of the space a bit more, especially with “Sword of Damocles” and “Eddie”.

Overall, I had a blast in the way that the shock value moments really kept me engaged, but I have a lot of quibbles with the production itself and the first preview syndrome was definitely there - lost in space, lost in time…and meaning

Also, regarding the callouts - there were definitely moments that felt like the cast was delivering their lines at a faster cadence to prevent the audience from the non-standard callouts, leading to those awkward moments.

I agree though that, though I had my favorite callouts already, my new favorite one has to be:

”And what of Brad and Janet. What further indignities were they to be subjected to”

”SHOCK TREATMENT!”

Sounds like the set is much closer to Brian Thomson's concept of a derelict cinema, with scaffolding on either side of the audience to hold the lab and Coke machine, than any production has done in a long time.

Based on his appearance in the curtain call video, everything about Rocky looks wrong to me. Wrong wig, wrong costume, wrong everything. Blech.

Damn, Evans is packing! Have to agree about the Rocky costume (I know he's supposed to be a blonde Adonis, but Rivera looked better in his Vogue photos with his natural hair). Costume looks weirdly like he's supposed to be a naked Ken doll.

I guess the extra cast members means there's a small backup group of Phantoms/Transylvanians, not just the nine players?

Those wigs look like they got them at a bulk discount from Spirit of Halloween.

I doubt there's random "extra" cast members. Playbill has 4 Phantoms and 4 swings listed.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Pedantic much? I was clearly saying they must have included Phantoms, since there are more than the nine traditional cast members.

My all time favorite Rocky Horror call out:

Riff: You're wet!

Janet: Yes, It's raining

Brad: Yes

Riff: Yes...perhaps you better both come inside.

Audience Call Out: I don't care where you come as long as you clean it up!

Considering all the bulge talk around Luke Evans, I kinda would be down if they wanted to make an Anita Morris-style commercial around that 😆
