A little surprised by Titanique but thrilled nonetheless. Perhaps they see their sales trending up as buzz grows.

Shocked as well at TITANÍQUE. New musicals pretty much are where they are gross-wise these days, their numbers tend to stay stagnant or decrease.

If I were to buy Rocky for mid-November, what are the best budget/cheap seats? Kind of surprised it is extending so long considering the reviews it got. But if it is selling well, good for Roundabout. I somehow doubt Imaginary Invalid will be a hot ticket for Fall. The play will probably be fine, but doesn't feel like a "must see" for tourists like myself.
Edit:Last year I did 5 days in DC before moving on to NYC. This year I'm thinking of doing 4 days in another city I've never visited, either Boston or Philadelphia. If I do that I'll probably be able to see 9 shows in New York. Right now I'm holding spots for some opera, Benjamin Button, and maybe In the Heights.

Rocky was known to having an extension already contracted in. Surprised at Titanique as I didn't think they had good advance sales.

Surprised for Titanique but happy for it. Hopefully it pays off for them, but is likely just a grab to try to get the Tony. They desperately need those 5pm Saturday performances.

If the theatre is available, there’s no harm in extending. If they have to reverse course and close earlier, then so be it.
Increasing the sales by $250K a week so they can break even is ambitious but not impossible. I suspect they see a path to a Best Musical win, even if the rest of us don’t.
I was struck by how dark that B-roll footage looks. It looks less bright/upbeat in the video than it actually looks in the theater.

I feel like I’m living in the upside down! Titanique extends, Beaches is still open, what next?!?

Excited for both, hopefully they'll be able to actually run past Labor Day weekend with a Tony nominations boost next week.

So many shows these days only go on sale for 3 or 4 months. With long term run ambitions they should all be on sale for 6 to 9 months.
These "we're extending" press releases are just shows chasing headlines.
I'm sure by the end of the day Mincemeat will announce another 3 day extension.

I somewhat disagree. It's a better strategic move to put 16 weeks on sale and then extend another 8 if demand exists. As opposed to a so-called "limited run" like BEACHES, which put 6 months on sale. The volume of people buying now for Thanksgiving or Christmas is going to be small. Creating a sense of urgency is not a bad thing.

I agree with this. One could assume “16 weeks only” was the minimum viable run they decided on to make this transfer plausible.
It’s smart. When so may people complained Swept Away was never given the time to build its audience—imagine if they also advertised as a limited engaged. Then folks who were interested would prioritize seeing the show earlier over other shows. And thus, you build your audience early.
This is what JPITV did. A limited run, tons of discounts to get people in the door during previews. Eventually word of mouth spread and tickets tha were $45 in previews were $400 come Tony time.
Not that EVERY show using this method will see that level of success, but it’s smart planning—scarcity & urgency are important for ticket sales. When deciding between seeing a limited run show versus and open ended run—people almost always say “I’ll see the open ended run later”.

MAYBE HAPPY ENDING and SOMETHING ROTTEN had great success with this, too. And DOLL's HOUSE 2 also had mega-preview discounts/comping.
If shows actually want to get people in during previews, price 2/3 of the seats in the first week below $50 --- and not some in-person promo where people have to jump through hoops to get the discount.
If the product is actually good enough, it will help word of mouth bigtime, and when theatre fans see a great show early, that can lead to a sense of 'ownership' and goodwill. (Doesn't help if your show is BEACHES or GETTIN' THE BAND BACK TOGETHER.)
Savvy consumers are not going to drop $100 on a product that they don't know anything about, whether it's a show or a household object.

The July 19th extension was the extension for Roundabout's contract. It now moves to a production with this new extension that was not originally contracted. There may be cast changes post July 19th.

There's so much possibility here I do hope there are a few cast changes. I would kill for Fra Fee or Gerard Way as Frank, then again I want those two in every show I could even slightly see them in.

Get Michael C Hall for Frank and I’ll be back there. Of course Adam Lambert would be idea, but Luke Evan’s made this role his own and is stunning (go see him quick)
