I saw the show last night after seeing it in London last year and, while I can’t explicitly speak to any changes, I can easily say this is one of the BEST offerings out there right now in terms of an overall good time. I loved this show in London because it is unfailingly earnest and unashamed to wear a giant heart on its sleeve, even in the more emotionally tense moments - like the musical version of a giant hug.
The story does tilt toward Tutty’s character a bit more, but Pitts is so talented and has such great chemistry with him that you would be forgiven for not recognizing that. I think what’s even better is their combined comedic timing. What could otherwise be lethally hokey in the wrong hands is instead elevated to a perfectly calibrated barrage of hit jokes, puns, one-liners, and callbacks that kept myself (and the audience), laughing. It’s the antithesis of the TL5Y revival.
Admittedly I was skeptical when they were putting the show into the Longacre, but it actually does fit perfectly into the space. I roamed around before the show and checked the sight lines, and even extreme side aisles and the balcony had a pretty good view because almost everything is downstage center and nothing extends out to the wings. If the producers can manage to suppress their greed for a bit and lower prices for previews/early performances, they could pull off a SHUCKED or MHE scenario.
My only two quibbles with this production are:
1) Fix the sound mixing so that the band doesn’t drown out the performers. I was in Row M (aisle) orchestra and there were times the band were louder than Tutty and/or Pitts while they were singing at full volume.
2) I absolutely DETEST the marketing and ad design for this show. For a property that has as much whimsy as this one, every piece of advertising and merch is so painfully sterile. I remember the London marquee being full of color and sparkle and even having a Statue of Liberty with the cake on the torch. If I didn’t already know the show and wanted to see it, I would’ve likely walked on by without a thought. Considering how obstructed the Longacre has been by scaffolding, I would step up my curb appeal and make the facade look like a fun musical instead of some low budget indie film.
