Heartbroken that Sunrise got cut, especially because the fire escape/morning golden-hour imagery would lend itself so well to cinematic visuals. It probably would have slowed the movie's momentum too much right in the middle, but still... dang.
In the Heights will definitely get better reviews than its previous stage-to-screen musical predecessor, The Prom. I would say somewhere in between the 70-80% range, mostly due to an iffy screenplay and overlong running time/some parts dragging. Mostly raves all across for Miranda's score, Ramos, Merediz, and Chu's direction. This film is built for the Golden Globes and it will probably get nominated for a handful.

i can’t get over how great daphne rubin vega was in this movie. she is radiant and she has that it factor where she just commands the space and fully embodies the role. she was amazing as daniela. she was one of the highlights for me.
If anyone gets wind of another screening, please be sure to post. Or PM me :P

one thing i didn’t like about the movie was how they cut out portions of carnaval, the club, it won’t be long now, and paciencia y fe
I’m so bummed that my screening didn’t work and skipped to the stuff after the film...
I did see that someone said it leaked online but I can’t find it in all of my normal places...
I was lucky enough to see the movie as well and I loved it. I didn't really care for the changes they made but the joyous energy more than made up for it. Olga Merediz was the absolute highlight for me, but I loved Daphne Rubin-Vega and Corey Hawkins! Hopefully, I can see this again in a theater!

It didn’t leak. The stream was internally coded so even copies “read” this code. Even if it’s filmed off the computer screen. If it DID surface, it was immediately yanked. They could have blurred the code that showed up on the screen occasionally but the internal code can be captured by servers.

Regardless of what I read so far, I can’t wait to see the movie on the big screen. Because I have been wanting it to happen since I saw In the Heights over a decade ago on tour in Costa Mesa. I was 17 I’m 28 now
The original motion picture soundtrack will be released on June 11- the same day as the movie. It is available to preorder starting on Friday.
Notice all the cut songs and switched song placements from the B'way production... should be interesting.
Overall, it is wonderful. Spoilers and quibbles below:
It is so infectiously joyful and YOUTHFUL, which really struck me after so many recent musicals that have been about middle-aged people or have featured people who aren't natural musical performers. Olga Merediz is tremendous and deserves serious Oscar consideration for her role. Thank god Rita Moreno had a scheduling conflict and couldn't do it. Nobody else is quite working on her level, but everyone gives totally respectable performances and everyone can sing. Anthony Ramos is so likable.
There are multiple musical numbers that would have been the best in any other movie. 96,000, When the Sun Goes Down, and Paciencia y Fe are all transcendent.
I found the opening weak and disjointed, and the end after Abuela Claudia's death is overlong. The film is 2.5 hours and it feels it, but the middle section soars. It's more sophisticated than the stage show, but the quaintness of the source material is still there.
It's a glossy view of upper Manhattan. Yes, they filmed on the streets, but they resurfaced all the storefronts and omitted the less savory aspects of town (crime, homelessness, grungy sections, an influx of both white and Black gentrification) which would have grounded it in a little more realism; 10% more Uncut Gems would have gone a long way and could have been achieved in the Mark Anthony scene. It's a love letter to New York City on the level of On the Town or Manhattan, and obviously Lin views his neighborhood through rose-tinted glasses.
I know Warner is hoping this can be a major hit like A Star Is Born. I don't think it will quite get to that level ("middle America" might still be turned off by it), but this will be a huge crowdpleaser and a serious contender at the Oscars in Best Director, Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Editing, and other crafts...which at that point basically makes it a Best Picture contender, too.
7 or 8 out of 10. Which is SO much better than other recent musicals.

They cut Enough and Everything I Know, my two favorite songs from the show. That’s too bad. I still look forward to seeing it. Glad to hear Daphne is radiant in the film. I always though she was and felt she was never given her due. She’s very unique and I find her captivating.

it did leak though, a friend watched it last night from a download link. leaks like these happen all the time with new films, i doubt it's much of a financial drain

i would have definitely loved the movie more if they cast more afro latinos. especially because there are lots and lots of afro latinos in washington heights. jharrel jerome, amara la negra, mack wilds, romeo santos, elvis nolasco, christina milian etc. they would have been great for this movie.
You can stream the title song right now on digital music platforms. I just gave it a first listen and it sounds great. Ramos sounds like he will be a dynamic Usnavi.

Would so love to see Olga Merediz getting just acclaim and awards buzz (she was so deservedly Tony nominated). Great actor and a great human being..
It’s really not an “awards” performance, although she’s excellent in the film. I’m still struck with just what a damn good film it is. For a show that I enjoyed on stage but was never blown away with, my love of the film really surprised me - it’s honestly (along with “The Prom”, one of the best movie musicals of the past 20 or so years.
I saw it last night and loved it. I think I'd love it more if I had never seen the show. They're very different. Subplots are missing. Character dynamics have shifted. Storylines are altered, along with the context for a lot of the songs.
I feel like I'll appreciate it more upon second viewing in a large theater.
All of the musical numbers and performances are exceptional, though.

another little thing that bothered me about this movie is the way carla sung her “chile....dominicurican” line lol.
