I can't believe the guy from Texas Chainsaw Massacre is going to direct this.

:) I know! Everytime I see his name I think Texas Chainsaw.

Well, there's a new twist for you! :) What if Enjolras and the students had chainsaws...
Still waiting for definite word on Hooper getting signed. Until it happens, he could still walk away.
And I think movie musical stars have to be able to sing at least a little. I don't think audiences will accept dubbed voices anymore. And I don't know about anyone else here, but I would have enjoyed the Phantom movie a lot more if Gerard Butler had actually been able to sing.

If they cast "opera" singers, they might as well have Tobe Hooper direct it. That's the only way I'll be interested.

But isn't the columnist, Baz Bamigboye, considered pretty reliable?

The idea of Alfie Boe as Valjean bores the hell out of me. Yeah, he can sing "pretty," but he's bland and unmemorable other than his (way too trained) voice. Why don't they cast the nice church soloist down the street who also sings pretty as Fantine?
Either McIntoch needs to get serious about doing a MOVIE version of Les Mis, or he needs to give it up. Or resign himself to a flop of a film, cast just the way he wants it. I hope he let's his casting choice go.
And I would love to see Downey Jr. as Valjean. Sean Penn? Not sure. But he would act the part beautifully, and he can certainly carry a film. I hope Marion Cotillard is Fantine. It would be nice to have at least one French person in a major role.

My only problem with Boe is that he's just not a Hollywood leading man. Nor is he all that attractive.
Robert Downey Jr. and Hugh Jackman, on the other hand, are. I'd love to see both in the film in either role.
Cotillard as Fantine would be inspired casting.

I'm with Besty on this one, thinking about Boe in the role makes me yawn. They need to remember the RENT movie where the majority of the actors (particularly Adam Pascal) simply got lost on screen and had absolutely no screen presence and no basic understanding of how to deliver a line in front of a screen.
I want a group of interesting, capable ensemble of actors in this. , It'd be great if it had a similar cast to something like MAMMA MIA, I'd love the idea of Marion Cotillard as Fantine (that's a brilliant idea, Besty!), Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thenardier, Robert Downey Jr. as Valjean, Vincent Cassel can play Javert.

My only wish is Marion Cotillard as Fantine.

I kinda wish they'd let Tim Burton direct, just to see if he'd treat it as a comedy since he took almost all of the humor OUT of SWEENEY TOOD.

Tim Burton took the chorus out of Sweeney Todd, too. He is quoted as saying he HATES it when everyone sings together in a musical, because it's not natural.
*waits for that little pearl of wisdom to sink in*
So if he directs Les Mis, you definitely won't "hear the people sing." At least not in a big chorus number together.
He should never be allowed near a Broadway musical adaptation again.

I personally think the right choice for director is already in talks to direct.

You guys are so off base on Burton's Sweeney Todd. It was a near perfect adaptation. And his film is just as funny as the musical. It baffles me when people suggest he took the comedy out of it. It's more subdued to be certain, but still ever present.
