Has filming officially commenced yet? I thought it was supposed to begin yesterday.

Either way, I hope it's a full cast announcement. It hasn't been 100% confirmed that Jeff Goldblum is our Wizard, but it seems quite likely. Earlier this week, Ariana Grande started following Ethan Slater on Instagram, which makes me think he could be our Boq. The rumor is also that Megan Stalter and Bowen Yang are Galinda's friends (whether they'll still be named Pfanee and Shen Shen, not sure).

So much still up in the air on this thing!

Megan publicly confirmed she couldn’t get an audition for the movie so she’s not in it. Bowen Yang is very, very likely as he follows Jon, confirmed cast members as well as Ethan, and they all follow him back.

Broadway veteran Ethan Slater, who scored a Tony nomination for “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical,” has been cast as Boq in Universal’s big-screen adaptation of “Wicked.”

In the film, directed by Jon M. Chu, Slater is joining the previously announced cast of Ariana Grande as Glinda, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero. Variety also reported that Jeff Goldblum is in talks to play the Wizard.

Going by who's following who on IG is not a very reliable way to deduce these things. Yang is a celebrity, naturally other notable people would follow him- and it makes sense that he would follow Bailey, another gay celebrity. And Yang and Slater moved in similar circles in NYC.

I mean, it's obviously not definitive, but it can be helpful. Taking note of Ariana Grande following Ethan Slater clearly wasn't unfounded.

Instagram shows followers in the order they were followed. When Ethan Slater follows Jon, and then Ariana, Cynthia, Jonathan in quick succession, followed by Bowen it’s fairly obvious he went on a Wicked follow spree. 
 

Incidentally at the same time he followed Bowen he also followed Marissa Bode, a POC disabled actor who looks like she’d make a great Nessarose…

Keep in mind this is something like an 8-9 month shoot, and certain characters like The Wizard and Morrible may not be shooting their scenes until next year. In the film industry, contract negotiations can go until literally days before an actor is called to shoot, which is why you often hear official casting announcements for certain roles after the film has started filming.

While id love to see her as Morrible, with her most likely getting nominated for an Oscar in a few months I do wonder if shed have any time to film from now till March. Maybe Morrible scenes wont start filming till after that. Hoping !

Nominees go into doing a ton of press and events prior to the awards. Some people don't attend or do any of those things but since she is a front runner for the award I predict she will.

She would likely be doing a ton of press events for the movie as part of its Oscar campaign. Sometimes actors don't participate in the press events (Olivia Colman rarely does) but Michelle has already done a ton of pre-Oscar campaigning for the film, so it would be expected she'd do even more after getting the nomination. These commitments would occupy a lot of her time the first three months of 2023.
