I dunno. Because she feels that way? Because she made a huge gaffe about fan art, so she's making sure not to alienate fans of the movie again? Who cares?"
Are you being purposefully dense? Movie ticket prices in Manhattan can be $25 or higher depending on format. To encourage a bunch of idiots to go to this film and be disruptive is the height of arrogance. If she took more than two seconds to think of a sensible response, she could have encouraged those who feel they must sing to go to one of the scheduled sing along showings in December. Even AMC theatres have a pre show message telling people not to sing. Good lord. This isn’t difficult.

I got that too! I’m assuming the new HBO series will stick with the “only British actors for British characters” they stuck to for the movies, but I totally was like “tell me she won’t be using this for an Umbridge audition” while watching it

Enjoy your outrage, but I think she likely thinks the idea of the audience singing along is fun, or she just doesn't want to make the same mistake she did the last time she expressed displeasure with fans. Not hard to figure out. As she has actually zero control over whether people sing or not, why not spend less time responding to her and more time asking ushers in the actual theater to deal with disruptive audiences. Just a thought.
Went back with some family and saw this again. Chu's direction is still appalling and I don’t know if it's because I avoid Marvel slop like the plague, but I have never seen lighting and editing this bad in a major motion picture. The additions are completely embarrassing and amplify the issues I have with the Broadway show. Cynthia and Ariana are just fantastic and really deserve a more competent film for their performances to exist in. I can tell a heterosexual man made this because of how remarkably campless this is. Everything is a huge downgrade from the really very beautifully designed broadway production. Michelle Yeoh gives a career worst performance (LOOK AT HOW THEY MASSACRED MY DIVA). Jennifer Coolidge should've been Morrible.
Surprisingly the CGI elements look the best and the most interesting because they simply don't know how to light those big practical sets. The whole movie looks like it was shot at noon on an overcast day!
I went to my third viewing last night and took 4 of my nieces with me, who absolutely loved the film.
As for me, I feel it is one of the best stage to screen adaptations ever done, right up there with “West Side Story” [1961], “The Sound of Music” [1964] and “Fiddler on the Roof” [1972].
Grande, Erivo, Goldblum, Yeoh and Bailey are all at the top of their game. This movie is going to get some major love come Awards Season. The film is killing it at the box office…a real crowd pleaser.
I finally saw it. Overall, I loved it, but I definitely need to see it again to have a fully formed opinion. I agree with others who have said that any issues with color saturation are due to the wrong equipment at the theater and not the movie. What I saw was extremely colorful, in a classic Hollywood way. Based on the crowd reaction, this movie will have significant legs, and I agree it will be a big awards contender given how positive the response has been from both critics and audiences. My audience cheered loudly at the end of Defying Gravity, and they clearly wanted to cheer at other points in the film. And this was not the pre-screening Wicked fanatics audience, but your general post-Thanksgiving day family crowd. The chatter coming out of the theater was full of lavish praise. Ariana and Cynthia were just perfect.
There were times where I wished the camera would zoom out and give a better sense of scale. This is something I think old Hollywood epics and musicals were great at - modern movies, not so much. And I definitely think they could have shaved off a full 25 minutes by tightening up some of the book scenes and just letting some of the songs fully play out rather than breaking them up with dialogue. But from the moment they got to the Emerald City until the end, I was on the edge of my seat. The scenes with the Wizard, Morrible, Elphaba, and Ariana were really well written, acted, and directed, and full of earned moments.
A few plot holes jumped out at me:
1) Why is Galinda the only student who is not required to wear the school uniform? It makes sense for Elphaba since she was not supposed to be a student, but not Galinda. Could have been addressed with one funny line.
2) Did Elphaba no longer need her glasses after Popular? They were noticeably absent from the time she got on the train.
3) Morrible tells Elphaba she will takes classes with Morrible only, but then Elphaba appears to be attending all classes like a normal student?
4) It took those guards a full five minutes to ramrod through a door that was NO LONGER LOCKED because the broom had been removed (yes, there was a cart in front of the door, but...that was a serious ramrod, and the cart would have easily been pushed out of the way).

I choose to believe that when Elphaba says "I have to go" during "Popular," it’s because she’s running late for her 8 a.m. appointment at the Shiz campus optometrist to get fitted for contact lenses.

None of these are plot holes, you're just expecting a movie of a fairy tale to adhere to real world logic.
Oh and those cameos.... what ever happened to shame?
I truly hated all the added little "Remember this thing from that thing" fan service too. The Broadway musical shows enough restraint to not really have too many of those cheap moments. I'm not sure why the choice was made to stretch this to a bloated 3 hours by adding garbage like "wHaT iF tHe RoAd WaS YELLOW??" or "HEY LOOK AT THIS HOT AIR BALLOON! LOOK FAMILIAR??"

What are you even doing here? You didn’t like the film. Everyone gets it. You’ve made your point multiple times. Now you are just trolling, period. And not very well, by the way.

1000%. The movie was very self indulgent.
The complaints people are having about color have nothing to do with bad projectors, and everything to do with cinematography, lighting, color grading and bad CGI.

Maybe plot holes is the wrong phrase, but, yes, I expect a movie of a fairy tale to adhere to real world logic when it comes to the real world elements of the movie (e.g., the Shiz dress code, Elphaba's ophthalmological needs, the physics of doors, etc.). I don't expect it to adhere to real world logic when it comes to the fantasy elements of the movie - e.g., applying real world logic, Elphaba's second spell should have caused her to sprout wings just like the monkeys rather than levitate a broom, but it's a magical spell from a magical book that clearly isn't bound by the logic of the real world.
I'm not mad about these things (and again, I loved the movie), just pointing them out in case there's something I missed.

Do you ever share your own opinions or thoughts on shows or movies or do you only complain about the thoughts and opinions of others? I have never seen you contribute a single intelligent thought to a conversation on here beyond calling everyone a "troll." This board is for theatre criticism and discussion and you seem to follow me around on here policing everything I say. Do you have a job? The only "troll" here is you. Get a GRIP!

Who said the Shiz dress code? The reason for it is because they're the leads and have to stand out. As for the in universe reason? Just pick one. Glinda is a spoiled rich girl who wears what she wants and Elphaba is a student only at the behest of Morrible so she gets to wear what she wants? The glasses? You've never seen someone switch up between glasses and contacts before? Like you're not even talking about "logic" when it comes to these things, you just want your hand held and need the simplist things explained to you. But like... Elphaba was delivered by a literal Wolf Doctor. Not an anthropomorphic Wolf Doctor, just a literal ****ing Wolf that walks on four legs and has no opposable thumbs and you're over here questioning Dress Code because they didn't take time out to orally explain it. Get it together.

Now that you mention it … was that Wolf even wearing gloves?!

lol you’re the one who brought up logic. I’ll work on “getting it together,” thanks for the suggestion. People are so weirdly triggered on this board.

And now you're calling me names?
I've reported you. You have made me a target and you have been harassing me for weeks. This is not normal. If you can't stand me so much and you have such a huge problem with criticism that does not align with your own opinion, I suggest that you block me and leave me alone.
