John Proctor is finally getting the audiences and the grosses it deserves!
Good bye, Real Women and Boop!
Mostly steady week...
Great showing for Buena Vista and John Proctor
Ouch for Boop and RWHC again. They just aren't catching on.
Dead Outlaw did not get a Tony noms bump like some of the other Best Musical contenders, which does not bode well. Smash is falling apart quickly too. Might not even make it to the end of summer like I originally thought it would.
And with this report, the 2024-25 Broadway season has officially ended with a record total gross, surpassing that of 2018-19. With tourism of all kinds now on the decline, it could take some time to get back to these numbers. (A-list celebrities will help to try and ease the pain in future seasons.)
Happy trails to REDWOOD, those aren’t bad numbers to end on.
Strangers Things grosses continue to tumble. Boop, Smash, and RWHC need to pull the plug.
Cabaret and Harry Potter also seem very close to deaths door.

If Cabaret casting rumors are to be believed, they might have a big bump mid-summer/fall. I wouldn't count it out quiiiiite yet
The grosses for Real Women Have Curves continue to be the most depressing thing of the week. It will probably run for a week after the Tonys, and then sadly close up shop. This show just deserved so much more. Boop probably closes around the same time. The spring road conference is probably the only reason that both shows didn't already announce a closing date.
And even in a pre-Memorial Day week that is guaranteed to be low on tourists....that number is a huge YIKES for Cabaret. This show is truly a showcase and lesson on the perils of star replacement casting in the States. For all of their talent, Orville and Eva aren't pulling in enough sales. How many weeks are these producers willing to throw away $300K+ before the next cast starts (assuming that the new batch of leads can actually sell enough tickets)? If those wild Miley Cyrus rumors are true then good for them. They basically need a Miley-level celebrity in every single round of casting to make this thing work financially.
The spring road conference was last week, probably resulted in a lot of comps and discounted tickets for these shows. Now that it’s passed I’m not sure what is keeping Boop, RWHC, and Smash hanging on.
Also adding that Dead Outlaw is toast. They have a very low average ticket cost and are still using discounts post-Tony nominations. And even with those lower cost tickets, they aren't selling out the house. Word of mouth is fairly poor. The Tony race was supposed to be Maybe Happy Ending vs. Dead Outlaw...but MHE has firmly pulled ahead. So no Best Musical win to boost the box office. Maybe a surprise win in book or an upset in featured actress. Neither would make a dent in sales. It's a small show, so it can ride these numbers for a bit, but when new shows arrive in the fall it's going to be drowned out.
Which A-List movie stars are going to make their Broadway debuts next season? With these astronomical grosses for star-driven plays, expect them to dominate Broadway through this incoming recession. New musicals, not so much.

Real Women will have life after Broadway in many regional theaters. Smash is just Trash that will soon be forgotten.

Actually; the race is now between MHE and DBH. With DBH showing to be a favorite in last weeks road convention.. so as far as the Tonys.. anything can still happen. I suspect financially DBH will eventually be the financial winner regardless.
Sadly, there's close to a dozen shows right now that'll probably be closing by Labor Day.

DBH cost 30M, right? It really needs that Tony…

You've been saying that every week. CABARET isn't going anywhere anytime soon -- sorry to disappoint.

Is the James Earl Jones cursed? When was the last time it had a show that ran more than a few months?
Is this the first week “Maybe Happy Ending” reached 100% + a million dollars?
Yes, I'd definitely that Death Becomes Her has risen to second place in the Tony race! I just meant that at the outset of awards season, most folks assumed the race would be Maybe Happy Ending vs. Dead Outlaw. But the latter just hasn't caught on in the way most people thought it would. Just furthering my thought that Dead Outlaw only makes it to September or October.

I’m not someone to root for a show to close, especially one employing as many people as Harry Potter. But if it does have to close up shop, I hope it makes JK Rowling pause for even just a second to think about how much energy she has thrown into her campaign of hatred against trans people.

Even if the Miley rumors are true I don’t see a world they’re able to ever recoup their initial investment. They’re probably having to recapitalize during Eva and Orville’s run.

Do you really think that her personal beliefs would have anything to do with the show running out of steam and closing? But yeah...I'm sure she will pause for a moment... and then go back to counting her millions of dollars!

While I'm pulling for a miracle for them, I truly don't understand what's keeping RWHC and BOOP from closing up shop. Ticket sales for the week ahead for both shows are absolutely terrible.
They might both be performing at the Tony Awards and hoping for a bump from that?

Can you just point as to where your getting this from? Thanks.
