What is waitress teasing this time?

The Waitress Musical Twitter account posted a tweet of a pie emoji earlier today. Any ideas what they could be teasing? I’m assuming they’ve finally found a distributor for the pro shot that was filmed, but I could be wrong!

Has to be the release date of the pro shot. It's not touring again and I don't think the rights have even been released for regional theaters.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Oh god! Please, oh PLEASE let it be a release date for the Pro-Shot!!!!!!!

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

So exciting! I’ve been wanting to see it since I saw the national tour in Costa Mesa in 2018.

Amazing news! Sara’s Jenna was perfection, and Waitress is one of my favorite musicals, so this is thrilling.

I believe this is happening because they haven't been able to find a streamer interested and they want to get it out there in some way and hope it can attract interest from a distributor.

I'm not sure how the scheduling works or what availability will be like, but I'll be back in the city the last weekend of the festival and would LOVE to be able to see it!

I'm not intending this to sound snarky, but is this above based on something? I find it really hard to believe a streaming service wouldn't distribute this, especially if it's already been filmed and put together? I donno, I'm not from the industry and don't know how that works, but it seems like an easy sell to me?

It's all rumors, but I've heard that basically all of the proshots that have been filmed, but have no announced plans for release are caught in limbo with distributors just not that interested in picking them up.

I could be wrong though and they could ll come out soon. We'll have to wait and see.

This right now is being handled as an indie film and having it picked up for the TriBeca Film Festival is a major push. It’s obvious they weren’t able to have it picked up by any studio or streaming service which is why it’s been in limbo so long. Hopefully this helps but no guarantees. DIANA: The Musical was filmed by Netflix, so it had a home from the get-go. Brooke Shields’ new documentary floated in limbo for a brief time until it was shown at Sundance and Hulu deciding on picking it up. The 2019 Truman Capote documentary floated in limbo after showing at DocNYC for 3 years until Hulu picked it up. Just because YOU think it’s an easy sell doesn’t mean industry outlets think so, too.

I wouldn't count on this coming out anytime now that the movie adaptation has been announced/moving forward.

If the impending writers strike ends up being lengthy everyone will be scrambling for already made content and these proshots will, all of a sudden, become super valuable.

The original Waitress movie debuted at a film festive (Sundance, not Tribeca) so could the musical debut be a homage to that?

No. They don’t have a distributor, so they’re opening at a festival to drum up interest and find a buyer.

I've been to a few films at the Tribeca Festival and sometimes the movies only get a single showing. I hope that's not the case here.

Even if it is, you do know there are bootlegs...I know it's not the same but it's not like there's no footage at all of the show

A new tweet from the waitress team seeming to hint at an impending announcement tomorrow.

jeez, of all the film distributors this ended up with Bleecker Street/Fathom Events? None of the major players must have wanted to put this in theaters. Bleecker is absolute bottom of the barrel. Though I suppose streaming rights will be separate and announced later.

Bleecker Street has acquired the U.S. rights to the filmed musical . . . set to release nationwide on December 7, 2023 in partnership with Fathom Events.
