What musical have you listened to/are listening to in quarantine?

For me it would mainly be Falsettos and into the woods

I love Falsettos so much.i don't know what's so special about it that I like, but I just love it

More recently, I listened to into the woods and watched the proshot for it. I think it's such a lovely musical and I love all the characters.

I've been listening to a lot of acoustic or stripped-down shows - Once, Next to Normal, Bridges of Madison County, etc. Anything where you can hear an acoustic guitar at the forefront has been on my list. On the other side of things, I've also listened to some very heavily-orchestrated "comedic" musicals, like Something Rotten and Beetlejuice - shows with a modern variation on the "Broadway" sound. I also discovered that the songs from Co-op the Musical (the Documentary Now sketch) are on Spotify, and I've been enjoying those - if someone can take those songs, write others, and turn that into a fully-fledged musical, they'd be a real hero.

And on the complete other side of things, I've also discovered the play Puffs on Broadway HD and totally fell in love with that. Which isn't a musical, I know, but the proshot is on repeat the way some cast albums are, so there you go.

I listened to the Canadian production of "Sunset Boulevard" for the first time this afternoon and really enjoyed it.

I have a large show tune playlist I listen to and I have listened to "& Juliet" several times in the past few months.

You should definitely listen to the Original Broadway Cast Recording (OBCR) of "Company". And watch the documentary on making the OBCR, that is what "Co-Op" is doing a parody of. I think you will appreciate/enjoy "Co-Op" even more if you do. I think "Co-Op" is brilliant.

I've been re-visiting a lot of classic cast recordings lately. Even though I have most of them available digitally I decided to unpack some of the actual physical CD's and give them a spin. I've narrowed it down to my top 5:

1. PROMISES, PROMISES - Original Broadway Cast Recording/Original London Cast Recording [2010 Kritzerland Limited Edition Re-issues] This now out-of-print 2 Disc Kritzerland re-issue of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's pop score is easily one of my all time favorite scores. The overture is one of the best ever written for a musical and it features winning performances from Jerry Orbach, Jill O'Hara, Edward Winter and Marian Mercer. The first disc includes the original Broadway cast album's original mix that was released in 1968 in a newly remastered version. The second disc includes a completely newly mixed version of the original eight-track session masters and sequenced in the order the songs were performed in the show. This edition is pretty much the definitive version of this classic score.

The London Cast Recording was also newly remastered and includes Betty Buckley and Tony Roberts in the leads. It's another winner with Buckley's smashing rendition of "Knowing When To Leave".

2. GREASE - Original Broadway Cast Recording [1972] - Sadly this recording has been rendered obsolete and has been eclipsed by the 1978 motion picture soundtrack, It isn't even available digitally, so I am glad that I held on to my physical compact disc of this recording.

3. GODSPELL - Original Cast Recording/Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [The 40th Anniversary Celebration: 1971/1973] This 2011 release includes the 1971 original cast recording and the soundtrack recording from the 1973 film adaptation. I love this score and I prefer the show in its first most purest form via the 1971 recording and appreciating the differences between it and it's cinematic counterpart. No other "Godspell" recordings are required. These two are it for me and definitive in my opinion.

4. FLOWER DRUM SONG - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [1961] The Original Broadway Cast recording is readily available on all digital platforms as is the recording from that woefully misguided revival with Lea Salonga and Jose Llana but this little gem is not. I consider this one of Rodgers & Hammerstein's most underrated scores but it's one of my favorites.. The film's score is supervised and conducted by the legendary Alfred Newman with Ken Darby and features Marilyn Horne's haunting rendition of "Love Look Away" which was used to dub Reiko Sato who played "Helen Chow" in the film. B.J. Baker, who dubbed Nancy Kwan gives a winning rendition of "I Enjoy Being A Girl" and Miyoshi Umeki, from the original Broadway show gets to reprise her role as "Mei Li" from that production.

5. HAIR - Original Off-Broadway Cast Recording [1967], Original Broadway Cast Recording [1968], Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [1979] - Another one of my all time favorite scores ever written for a show and I love listening to each recording to appreciate their differences and interpretations of the score. Cheryl Barnes recording of "Easy to Be Hard" on the movie's soundtrack however is in my opinion the definitive version of this song. These 3 recordings of "Hair" are pretty much my go to versions.

Last night, I watched the Company revival (the 2006 Raul Esparza one) last night, then the cast recording documentary. So I guess I'm set for Co-Op.

I have watched or listened to a fair number of Sondheim shows, prompted by the 90th birthday special and my decision to watch musicals of his I hadn't seen. (One of the local productions I had been looking forward to seeing this summer was Follies.)

I have listened to The Producers more in the last three months than in the prior 5 years. It makes me happy, and I do think that Betrayed is one of the great stars turns EVER.

I also love listening to the recent OCR of Oklahoma. Every time I listen to it, I am amazed how sexy some of its war-horse songs are, particularly Surrey With the Fringe on Top?????? It is probably the only time that I have enjoyed I Can't Say No, which I love in this version.

I’ve dug out my old CASSETTES boxes (remember those?) and a modified Walkman so I can listen to shows I’ve never gotten on CD on my morning reservoir jogs.

THE APPLE TREE (OBC) is the latest one. What an odd collection of songs that is!

MAME was the plan a couple of days ago, but the tape had stretched beyond usability. Que lastima!

I have listened to The Apple Tree a few times a year for decades. Interestingly, I always enjoy the Act 1 songs the most, although when I was 50+ years younger, I enjoyed it the least.

I still play Mame at least once a month because I just love it from the glorious overture right to that classic Jerry Herman curtain call recreation. Ot course, the thing I love the most is the title song, with the great crescendoes, that make the song more and more exciting, as it reaches its conclusion. I find it very frustrating that some consider the show un-revivable because of that single number, since the number is both glorifying Mame's acceptance, but also making fun of the Southerners, when you really listen. I can't help thinking that, if really necessary, a few lyrics could be changed for those who don't get the fact that it is not really celebrating the old South.

Today's cassette was the Rise Stevens recording of LADY IN THE DARK. What gorgeous dreamscapes Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin created-- rivaling the dreamscapes of the CAROUSEL ballets. Somehow an especially good fit for pandemic times.

Classics for me too and some which didn't do well e.g., "Kwamina". Love Sally Ann Howes singing, "Another Time, Another Place". Also "Sweet Charity", "Seesaw", "Dear World" to name a few as well off Broadway recordings of "Best Foot Forward" and "The Fantasticks",
