The poster who said her "nobody . . " is wierd definately saw a clip of her singing because its the only one where she sounds like that.

i am truly impressed by ana gasteyer! her acting, her singing...ok..ana'sthe wizard and i..not the BEST..but her no good deed blows them all away! i just like her!
Stephanie, Idina (not at the Tony's, though. That scared me there... but perhaps my speakers are faulty or something), and Eden all rank as my favorites. Of what I've heard of Shoshana I like, but occasionally, she gets too bright even for me: "grav-ih-tEEE," "mEE." I do have to admire everyone who's done the song (er, in the show; no drunks), though, for really making it their own.
I'm not a fan of Jenna Leigh Green. Of course, I haven't seen her live, but I've heard some other people with similar criticisms to mine. Most of my idina boots aren't very good either. However, she was amazing the one time I got to see her live.
Steph and Sho have incredible DGs, I can't pick 1. Although the boots of Steph aren't nearly as flattering as the ones of Sho.
Tap...the first time I saw Steph, she was having a Liza Minelli night, and I wasn't so thrilled. However, I went back and was completely blown away. You probably saw her on a Liza night.
Pen...your speakers aren't faulty. The Tony's DG was the most atrocious rendition of that song I've ever heard.
Got-a-light...ME TOO! I listen to the song just for "western sky".
but Idina was the best as Elphaba. I cringed when I saw Shoshana do it. and Stephanie is second for me. I haven't heard any of the others nor do I want to.
I started reading this and I couldn't help but notice how many people are judging based on bootlegs.
First of all, bootleg discussion is not allowed on this board.
Now, as someone who is studying RECORDED MUSIC, I can assure you that any given performance will not be accurately preserved by a 15 year old kid taping on their Radio Shack tape recorder intended for voice memos. Sounds get lost in the shuffle, and without the proper equipment, people can (and do) sound like garbage. Think about it...do you sound like yourself on home videos?
I haven't seen all of the Elphies, but I saw Idina 5 times, Eden once, and Shoshana once, and from those performances, my vote goes to Idina.
Idina: Somehow I got myself to the stage, came out at the end of the show, and I had some kind of closure.
Some guy: You looked great!
Idina: Thanks...I WAS SO HIGH!

I've heard all Elphabas aside from Courtney Corey, and I believe that Shoshana has contributed the most consistently exciting Defying Gravitys. Bless her soul, but the worst Defying that I've heard is from Idina on "Understudy Day" . . . wow.
Best: Shoshana Bean, no contest. I mean, her DGs were better at the end of her run than at the beginning. After performing that song 8 times a week for a year, that's pretty impressive.
Worst: I know I'll probably get slaughtered for saying this, but Idina. She's inconsistent, takes way to many loud breaths, and screeches a lot of the time, especially toward the end of her run. She sounds pretty good on the cast recording, though, but that's doctored so I don't really count it.
Best: Shoshana Bean....the girl is flawless vocally, and she did a great job with the role acting wise. I loved her subtle take on Elphaba. Some of the acting of the other Elphabas has been atrocious.
Worst: Idina Menzel at the end of her run. She was flat, and could not hold out the notes. And like every other number, she screamed most of it.
Just my humble opinion.
Cheers,

YES, her last note is outrageous!! I would have to say though I personally think Idina when I saw her second week of previews was fantastic!! Eden comes in second for me. Worst for me has to be Ana Gasteyer.
