re: Who sings defying gravity the best/ worst?

You're certainly entitled to your opinion. I'm still going with Kristy, because of her obvious classical training. Her belting technique is FLAWLESS!

I'm agreeing with zoran..you're entitled to your opinion. But MUST you pick Eden? So, she was in BKLYN and you thought she was amazing. BESIDES Eden, who sings Defying Gravity the best?

re: Who sings defying gravity the best/ worst?

I liked Ana Gasteyer's defying gravity the best. I wish I could have heard Stephanie J. Block, but I couldn't get tickets in time and I'm too broke to travel somewhere to see her.

I don't know about best, because each performer brings something different to the song, my personal favorite is a tie between Saycon and Stephanie.

as for worst, definitely Idina at the tonys, it was painful to watch.

re: Who sings defying gravity the best/ worst?

I've seen Jenna and Ana live and really liked both of them. I don't remember Jenna's as well as Ana's, since I saw Ana just last week. But I do remember liking both of them better than Idina on the OBCR and def. Idina on the Tonys. The thing with Idina is that I could hear her breathing/gasping on the Tonys (well, everyone did) and on the CD (though it wasn't as obvious). But I think I liked Idina's Wizard and I the best...

And as far as non-Elphaba recordings go, I'm definately a fan of Raúl Esparza's version of Defying Gravity.

Kristy Cates. with Idina/Steph/Eden all tied in a muddle for 2nd. I'm actually also becoming quite partial to Maria Eberline's. Very nice.

Worst...too hard. I wasn't as keen on Jenna's, but she has a beautiful voice, so I don't dislike it. I just think she's better as a Nessa. Her WWOTE was perfection.

Best: Idina, Shoshana, Stephanie, Eden, Kristy (haha!)

Worst: Ana Gasteyer. She sounded fine but her performance was disappointing for me.

Well, as much as I love Idina on the OBC, I think Sho sings it the best. As for worst. Idina on the Tonys. I love her voice, but that night she did not sound right.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Best- Idina
Worst- Shoshana Bean

I agree that each performer brings their own uniqueness to the song. I think that Idina and krity REALLY did make THEIR song, instead of singing it like the previous elphaba and changing a few riffs. True, idina was really breathy at the tony's, but is only ONE time she sang the song. On the recording its flawless, as it would be on a broadway recording if any other performer sang it

re: Who sings defying gravity the best/ worst?

BEST: Idina (live...the cast recording is kind of lame) by a mile. Or ten. She GETS it and really performs it and puts passion into it that is severely lacking with other renditions of the song. Though Eden's last riff in the song gives me chills every time.

WORST: Idina at the Tonys. A very unfortunate representation of a wonderful performer.

Of the ones I've actually seen----(steph jenna saycon and ana)

BEST: Steph and Jenna
Worst: Saycon

I also enjoy the fb svu riffs! She does a great job!

I'm gonna have to defend the Eden version. She's literally the only one who sounds like she is belting who also doesn't sound like it hurts. AND...who else stays on that high F at the end??? She's just fierce.

Shoshana is amazing in the role, but Defying Gravity just isn't her big moment. Ana is good in it, but her riffs aren't clean. Steph is a little too refined for the music (even though I ADORE her). Saycon doesn't feel it enough for me. And Jenna and Kristy are clearly mixing a little too much for my tastes on this song.

WORST: I agree -- Idina on the Tony's was painful at best.

re: Who sings defying gravity the best/ worst?

Best- Kristy Cates and Eden!

Worst- Stephanie J. Block, Idina always! Idina just shouts the whole thing and it isnt impressive. Anyone agree with me? And Stephanie is a good singer but still sings like Cher and Liza Minelli!!

re: Who sings defying gravity the best/ worst?

Best: Shoshana! The riffs are just incredible.

Worst: Eden / Maria Eberline-- They are basically clones of each other and I just don't like the sound of them on the song.

re: Who sings defying gravity the best/ worst?

I have become an even bigger fan of Jenna's voice after hearing her DG. I love her mix/belt. It sounds so healthy. I prefer the mixy sound. Kristy and Jenna all the way.

I will be honest, I do not dislike Eden in the least. I think her vocal skill comes across much better live. I personally find the BKLYN recording to be abysmal. I enjoyed that show when I saw it, mostly due to Eden's fierce belt/mix...and Karen Olivo being amazing, of course. I love Eden's voice when it's on. Tiny-Toon is not insane, just obsessed. *dodges projectile tomatoes*
