Next, everyone who does not like Wicked will be accused of being a bully... In fact, that's probably why we don't like it.

Seriously, again, I abhor Wicked. Especially Defying Gravity.

Idk i Just don't understand.I mean yeah i get that people like to be funny and snarky on here ( that's one of the reasons this board is so fun) but Some people are Just plain mean on here.Im glad people have different opinion than me and try to defend them.It would be a boring message board if my arguments weren't challenged. But there is a big line between debating and bullying.

It's hard to perceive that or get that when, at least in this thread, you said that many with a different opinion of the show are "jaded snobs", especially after people had already offered pretty valid, well-put opinions why they do not like that show.

And err on the side of not joking about AIDS. Many here have lost loved ones to it.

The jades snob thing came up only because we got off subject.I didn't call them jaded snobs because of their opinion on a show i called them jaded snobs because they were just being rude and it had nothing to do with theatre. Yes. Although it was a harmless joke i can see why that would upset people and for that I apologize for the that rather insensitive remark about Rent/HIV

After seeing Legally Blonde yesterday I now consider Wicked a Masterpiece--and no-that is NOT an April Fool joke.[Must check to see if best/worst April Fools' is on Off topic].

frontrowcentre2 - The wonderful thing about boards is that you can ignore posts that you don't like or feel they are lame. I have not been a member long enough to know if moderators delete threads if they are repetitive to ones already posted.

I love the novel, but I can't say I know a single person (not even teenagers) who has come out of the show raving about it. And then I read a synopsis, which seemed lost somewhere between Maguire and MGM. (!)

So I saved myself $100.

But I do think "Loathing" musicalizes its subject in a remarkable way. Concentrating on the exhilaration of hatred is so much more interesting than focusing on the malice.

No, yankeefan, they don't. We should be so lucky.

Something I hate more than Wicked: people misusing the term "bullying."

Bullying is the use of force or coercion to abuse or intimidate others. The behavior can be habitual and involve an imbalance of social or physical power.

"It's clear you are pursuing a degree in circus and not comedy."

"And I didn't know that's how the game went! Remember when Broadway Guy's Mom sold herself to as many men in one night as she could in order to pay for a boob job that her pimp wanted her to get so he could make her more money otherwise he'd cut her money maker up with a knife and "don't nobody want no cut up ho" so she did a marathon run in downtown L.A. with just herself and a cup as proof of her conquests?"

But hey whatever Im over it.You should be also

I don't know who was bullied, when or why, but if we define every form of human manipulation as "bullying" then all human interaction is bullying.

Although some encounters may be more altruistic than others, all human contacts involve an attempt to sway the behavior of another.

Aw, thanks, Gaveston, although I cannot take credit for its creation. I've truly enjoyed seeing so much love and creativity this past week on the Marriage Equality theme.

I don't hate Wicked, however I do have problems with it. I think I can sum up everything that I find wrong with Wicked with: It's too commercialized. It's been designed to be a cash cow.

I should probably start by admitting that Wicked is my favorite show. It works for me emotionally, plain and simple.
That said, I understand what many of you are saying about its commercialism being distracting. I'm currently researching and writing a paper about the show, and that's one of the aspects I'm discussing- how it's essentially today's version of the megamusical (obviously not to a precise degree but sharing several elements). But I'd also like to point out the social/political allegory present in the show, particularly the feminist slant. Think about it: the only type of power male characters wield is political, which the show seems to present as "false" or at least a lesser power than the "real" magic wielded by four women to varying degrees. It's an interesting critique of the ways in which women with power are often forced to fit into a male-dominated social construction (ie Morrible loses herself in her fight to be valued by that structure; Glinda fits herself into it by being traditionally "girly").
On a related topic, I find its portrayal of female friendship refreshing. I can't think of another show (at least not immediately) in which the primary relationship is a friendship between women. There are so few dual leading ladies, and when there are, they're usually pitted against each other (I'm thinking Chicago, for one). Sure, there are female friendships in plenty of shows, but they're always secondary to romantic relationships with men. But this is a tale that demonstrates the effect women can have on each other's lives, through ups and downs, because ultimately it is Glinda who most influences Elphaba and vice versa.
Forgive me if I sound pretentious or upset anyone by defending a show I know tends to be a bit polarizing around here. I just happened across this thread during my research and figured I'd throw my two cents in.

You didn't sound pretentious or upset. You simply addressed your thoughts, and quite well at that.

I'll agree with you (a tad) about female relationships, but it's the same in film and tv. Men that bond touch both men and women: Brian's Song and Shawshank Redemption spring immediately to mind. But when the same theme is attempted for women it is more perceived as solely a "chick flick".

Wicked, the stage show, is a queer Disney musical. At the heart, it's the story of what is at LEAST what they call a "romantic female friendship," and at most, a quietly lesbian love story. I believe there's a quote from some member of the Wicked production team (I believe Mantello, Schwartz or Holtzman), remarking that they're surprised the biggest musical on Broadway is a lesbian story and nobody has really noticed it yet.

However, Wicked, the book, is QUEER AS ALL HELL. It takes the idea of heteronormativity in Oz and flushes it down the toilet. By the first chapter, we have a man with two penises. Elphaba's actual sexual organs are never fully determined in the book- it is strongly implied that she is a hermaphrodite transwoman, and the lesbian subtext of Elphaba and Glinda is much closer to text. Plus, the musical makes the Ozdust Ballroom a discotheque. In the book it's a bestiality club in which Munchkins have sex with tigers.

Bullying is the use of force or coercion to abuse or intimidate others. The behavior can be habitual and involve an imbalance of social or physical power.

Being on the receiving end of some snarky or mean comments on a message board doesn't constitute coercion or abuse. Bullying also involves violence, either emotional, verbal, or physical.

I'm not saying that the comments you got weren't mean or hurtful, but they don't fit the bullying pattern.
