"Something Bad" from Wicked is literally the first song I thought of when I saw this thread. There are a few in that show that I am not a fan of, but that's my least favorite. There are a bunch from Brooklyn, but I don't even know the names of them anymore. Also, "Shipoopi" from the Music Man. And, I get the point of it in the show...sort of....but I really can't stand "It Couldn't Please Me More" from Cabaret.
Did someone really put "Far From the Home I Love" from FIDDLER on this list? It is a gorgeous ballad by Bock & Harnick. Shame! Oh, the shame!
I agree with those who don't understand why "Little Lamb" and "Send in the Clowns" are so reviled.
"Something Bad" from WICKED is just that ... something really bad.
I have trouble putting any Richard "The God" Rodgers song on this list, but I think I might have to concur with "It's a Scandal, It's a Outrage." That really is a stinker.
Itty Bitty Geisha?
Toyland?
Gypsy Pasadoble?
Just a few popular favorites...
This thread is completely ridiculous. The title isnt "Broadway songs I dont like" or "Broadway songs I am sick of."
I'm sick of lots of songs and shows, some I've never liked, but that doesnt make them the worst ever.
Seriously, what argument can be made that "Send in the Clowns" is the WORST BROADWAY SONG EVER?
"Carson has combined his passion for helping children with his love for one of Cincinnati's favorite past times - cornhole - to create a unique and exciting event perfect for a corporate outing, entertaining clients or family fun."
>> Seriously, what argument can be made that "Send in the Clowns" is the WORST BROADWAY SONG EVER?
None. It's just trendy, like saying "I freaking hate that Rosencrantz and Guilderstern Are Dead play" simply because it was considered (erroneously) a "snob hit".
Yes, you have to put a lot of this in historical context, but there are some songs that really stand out as WTF? Wonders, the sort of songs that were put in to cover the set changes or because the composer/lyricist ran out of ideas or were too bored to think any further than their elbows. "Scandal/Outrage" ceertainly qualifies in that regard, because you know, looking at it, that Richard and Oscar were far more experienced than to write a clunker like that.
So, the title thread should be changed, should never have been written that way?
Rename the thread: BROADWAY SONGS I JUST CANT STAND, or BROADWAY SONGS THAT STINK, IMHO.
"Carson has combined his passion for helping children with his love for one of Cincinnati's favorite past times - cornhole - to create a unique and exciting event perfect for a corporate outing, entertaining clients or family fun."
In my heart, I found the answered dream,
and in my soul I found the song, and in my friends
I found the magic, the love,
the moon up above- they were mine, all mine, all along..!
Thank you. I'm sorry but nothing in Blonde's score is some of the "worst ever".
Though I do agree with someone who said "rare songbirds on display" from side show. a terrible terrible song in the middle of a musically brilliant show.
Is a "A Sentimental Man" that bad? I just think its unmemorable and its like a minute anyway.
My vote goes to "Like Father, Like Son" from Aida. That score drives me beyond crazy. Half is beautiful and half is just terrible.
Aghh I am shocked that "Far From The Home I Love" has been mentioned!
This Was A Real Nice Clambake & Mr. Snow- Carousel Turkey Lurkey Time You've Got to be Taught- South Pacific I Shall Scream- Oliver! Poor Jud is Dead- Oklahoma Chip on my Shoulder- Legally Blonde
I respect your opinion Shiksa, but I'm with doodlenyc on there being a difference between songs we just don't like and songs that are actually among the worst in Broadway history. There are songs in Grey Gardens, for instance, that I personally hate, but I still would never say they're the worst songs ever, because obviously lots of people think they're brilliant and there are songs out there-like the aforementioned Out for Blood-that are just so devoid of craft or purpose that my own personal dislike for certain songs that aren't to my taste doesn't make me think that they should go down in history as Broadway's ultimate clunkers. If, however, we're viewing this thread as a venue for complaining about songs that we don't like, then that's cool too, and I apologize if I offended you by so strongly disagreeing with your choices.
I couldn't possibly pick out the worst Broadway song ever. I don't think I've seen enough musicals to really be of help on that score. There are quite a few I hate, but I can usually see the value of them.
Calling "Send in the Clowns" the worst broadway song ever is completely absurd. If you don't like it, that's one thing. But it most certainly is not the worst.
Personally, I'm in the camp that likes "Little Lamb." I think it's pretty, simple, sweet, and sad and really works for Louise at that point in the show.
I adore Little Lamb...and even if they DID write it so they could change a setpiece...I like it...so it's not the worst.
ITs THE BEST BROADWAY SONG EVAH!
Shiksa...no opinions here...it's absolute WORST SONG EVER...period.
"Carson has combined his passion for helping children with his love for one of Cincinnati's favorite past times - cornhole - to create a unique and exciting event perfect for a corporate outing, entertaining clients or family fun."
I love Little Lamb. I think it's a beautiful poignant song that provides valuable insight to the character in a way that doesn't mature the character too soon. Remove the song, and the first act loses much of its focus, making Louise almost a peripheral character until the end of the act.
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian
I really think that putting an "ever" in your thread title is ludicrous, though, because I doubt all of us have heard all the Broadway songs ever recorded and/or performed. The "ever" is a bit limiting.
"Calling "Send in the Clowns" the worst broadway song ever is completely absurd. If you don't like it, that's one thing. But it most certainly is not the worst."
Yeah but isnt this entire thread based on opinion? I mean is there criteria for thinking that a particular song is the "worst?"
The morning star always gets wonderful bright the minute before it has to go --doesn't it?
It doesn't say "Your Least Favorite Broadway Song" or "Broadway Songs You Hate."
I think this requires a degree of objectivity. Of course, I really think these threads are moot anyway because, as I said in the post before, nobody's heard all the Broadway songs in existence.
