I figured now that the year's ending, we might as well post the requisite TOP 10 list.
I've already posted mine (August: Osage County, Blackbird, Curtains, Cyrano, Journey's End, The Clean House, The Coast of Utopia, The Receptionist, The Scene, The Seafarer)...
I still have to see the following shows: SPEECH & DEBATE, MAKE ME A SONG, GONE MISSING...
But My Top 10 of 2007 : (shows that opened in 2007 for me) not in order
1. Xanadu 2. 'eurydice' 3. August : Osage County 4. Mauritius 5. Cyrano de Bergerac 6. Pygmalion 7. Streamers (in Boston) 8. Frost/ Nixon 9. Forbidden Broadway : Rude Awakening 10. Spain- eventhough with bad reviews.. I love this show
Everyone's gonna gnaw at me for this, but... these are what I thoroughly enjoyed this year (didn't see alot of new to 2007 stuff, just stuff that opened in the end of '06). No order, either.
This is a very hard question. I saw 150 shows during the calendar year, and enjoyed many of them. It truly was a great year for the artform. But if I had to single out ten, they would be:
100 Saints You Should Know [Off Broadway-Playwrights Horizons-Mainstage] August: Osage County [Broadway-Imperial Theatre] Blackbird [Off Broadway-Manhattan Theatre Club-City Center Stage I] Follies [Off Broadway-City Center Encores] Gypsy [Off Broadway-City Center Encores-Summer Stars] Journey's End [Broadway-Belasco Theatre] A Midsummer Night's Dream [Off Broadway-New York Shakespeare Festival-Delacorte Theatre] The Misanthrope [Off Broadway-New York Theatre Workshop] Richard III [Off Broadway-Classic Stage Company] Rock 'N' Roll [Broadway-Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre]
And, for good measure, five honorable mentions: 110 in the Shade [Broadway-Roundabout Theatre Company-Studio 54] Essential Self-Defense [Off Broadway-Playwrights Horizons-Peter Jay Sharp Theatre] The Glorious Ones [Off Broadway-Lincoln Center-Mitzi E. Newhouse Theatre] The Homecoming [Broadway-Cort Theatre] Translations [Broadway-Manhattan Theatre Club-Biltmore Theatre]
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
-John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Young Frankenstein...I know it says Top 10 and I didn't even really like this show, but I tagged it on the end because of Andrea and Christopher's performances.
"Somethin's comin', I don't know what it is but it is gonna be great!"
This is my list of the best shows I saw this year in no order, not all opened this year though:
Curtains Grey Gardens Spring Awakening Jersey Boys (SF production) Xanadu Frost/Nixon Sweeney Todd (SF Production) Legally Blonde (SF Production) The Color Purple Avenue Q
Yes, but sometimes people have a third deeper layer thats the same as the first. Like pie. Dr. Horrible
1. Patti LuPone in Gypsy 2. Patti LuPone in Gypsy 3. Patti LuPone in Gypsy 4. Patti LuPone in Gypsy 5. Patti LuPone in Gypsy 6. Patti LuPone in Gypsy 7. Patti LuPone in Gypsy 8. Patti LuPone in Gypsy 9. Patti LuPone in Gypsy 10.Patti LuPone in Gypsy
Oh, not even close! I may not have liked Patti's performance, but I did enjoy the production (how could one not?). And Patti's performance, in my opinion, wasn't the worst I saw all year by far. In fact, if I were to make a list, I'm sure she'd fall very close to the middle of the spectrum.
With the exception of Tully (In No Particular Order) - NYMF, August: Osage County, 110 in the Shade and The Pillowman (at Berkeley Rep) my ten best theatrical experiences all had to do with feeling blessed to see certain performances. So here are the other seven...
Hairspray u/s - Van Hughes as Link, Marissa Perry as Tracy, Hayley Podschun as Penny Legally Blonde u/s - Becky Gulsvig as Elle, Andy Karl as Emmett tick tick Boom - Colin Hanlon (in Glens Falls) The first performance of the Chicago Cast of Jersey Boys in San Francisco Curtains u/s - John Bolton as Cioffi Grey Gardens u/s - Maureen Moore as Little Edie, Dale Soules as Big Edie
And honorable mention for sheer insanity: Pirates! at Papermill
Legally Blonde Wicked (saw it for the first time this year finally) Jersey Boys Spring Awakening Mary Poppins Alter Boyz (off broadway--but great) Ave Q (also finally saw that one this year) Xanadu
