The 'Spiderman' people are doing the same as Brooks did! There's nothing wrong or new in doing that- if a house has a show thats failing or closing then the next one needs to get measured up etc.
I have my tickets for MINSKY'S, so I'll let you know.
I do love the thought of her in PAL JOEY, though. Good call.

While I feel bad for the cast, I am not at all surprised.
Yeah, Julie Taymor has had her eyes on the Hilton for awhile now for the (apparently) mammoth production of Spiderman.
It had a decent run for a not so decent show

Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All those actors will be out of work!!!!!!!!!!
Beth Leavel leaves the show December 21st.
I wonder if they're still hoping to bring Cloris Leachman in for what will now be the last couple weeks of the run (though I doubt it.)

I personally really enjoyed this show----altho' I have to admit I enjoyed it more with Mullally and Foster. I liked Beth's Frau as much as Andrea's. The male leads are outstanding. Too bad.
I knew Beth was leaving before January 4, but it wouldn't surprise me if that woman found a way to do both shows simultaneously. She has more energy than a teenager! Love her.

I would guess that the only show that recouped would have been 42nd Street -- anyone know if it did? If it didn't, after ten years of money-losing shows, I would THINK someone might come up with something to make that space more palatable.
The greed and stupidity of Mister Brooks, is why this show never got a good following ...instead of letting the show build He declared himself a 13 tony winner before the first curtain with his $450.00 premium seating ...good ridance
With all of these shows closing, before you know it the only thing we'll be seeing on Broadway is tumbleweeds.

Billnj, I agree with you that if Mr. B had let the show build naturally, people (especially on this board) would not have had such a bad feeling. It was actually a funny show with some good music and a great cast, but people rarely posted that because of the initial bad feelings re: the $450 premium seats before it even opened, etc. (IMO anyway)

"hopefully Avenue Q is next on the hitlist"
Why would you even hope this?!
Sad thing is, you're probably right.
On-topic, at least this will prevent "Blazing Saddles: The Musical" from ever getting made...
This makes Chris' departure today even sadder.
Any word on when SPIDERMAN might be coming in?
AVENUE Q is definitely next. And should be. Not just because it's financially mediocre but because it's mediocre all around at this point in its run. It's not as sharp as it was when it opened by any means.
Sad to see YF go though...I'm assuming it didn't make back its investment.
Bias and all aside, t's a pretty good show. Not great but not terrible.

"Dracula: Men in Tights "
Surely this is some sort of surreal joke...
For whoever asked, the only show to play the Hilton and recoup so far has been How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2006. 42nd Street came pretty close to making its money back, but Ragtime, Jesus Christ Superstar, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Hot Feet and The Pirate Queen were all financial failures.
Maybe GRINCH will come back to the Hilton. Is it coming this holiday season?
Also, am I the only one who gets frustrated by the fact that every time a headline on BWW has the title 'YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN' in it, they just write 'YOUNG FRANK'...?
THE GRINCH was also playing 15 performances a week, which definitely helped in making its money back.
YF wasn't so bad. I admit I still listen to the cast recording and enjoy it. Too bad Mel got himself in over his head with those ticket prices.

It was entertaining, just a bit painful to watch at times. They Spamalotted it way too much (to Spamalot = to take a funny joke from the source material and a) turn it into a long musical number that draws out the joke so much it kills it or b) take a long pause and mug so everyone in the audience can get in a good laugh or laugh at the joke before it's even told), Mel's kind of a dick, and Sutton Foster and Chris Fitzgerald were severely underused. The guy from broadwayabridged said it best: It could have been good if they tried a Wildhorn-spoof type thing, but instead they just tried to clone The Producers.
Is THE GRINCH coming back this season? I'm assuming not but that's kinda awkward that it came back two years in a row and then disappeared...
