Somebody will have to refresh my memory. Who was Rory O'Malley in Book of Mormon? Was he really that good, because no male performance barring the two leads stands out in my mind.
If Mantello, Hickey and Barkin all won, and O'Malley, James and one of the two lead males all won, would that be the first time that one show dominated both the drama and musical acting categories in a single year? I know it's happened before on the musical side (LuPone GYPSY, KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN, original SOUTH PACIFIC), but I can't think of examples from the drama side...and definitely not all in one year.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
-John Guare, Landscape of the Body
1998: "Beauty Queen of Lenane" dominated the play acting categories, and the revival of "Cabaret" dominated the musical acting categories, winning three apiece. That's the only example of a play and a musical dominating in the same year though.
You're exactly right! I had forgotten about both of those. So, if this were to happen, it would be the first time since 1998.

@tophercraz - Interesting, you didn't even have to take Parson's name and Jordan did it for you. I wonder what made him think you were talking to him, though.
More importantly.. yes, proud and happy to see that JP's performance has generated enough goodwill for some people to consider him worthy of a Tony nomination.
My Final Tony Award Nomination Predictions (Each nominee in the category is ranked from 1-4 or 1-5 with 1 being the most likely to win)
Best Musical 1. The Book of Mormon 2. Sister Act 3. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert 4. Catch Me if You Can (A lot of people are predicting “The Scottsboro Boys” for the 4th slot, but I really don’t think it will have enough support for a nod in the big category)
Best Play 1. War Horse 2. Good People 3. Jerusalem 4. The Motherf**ker with the Hat (the last slot could go to “Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo”)
Best Revival of a Play 1. The Normal Heart 2. The Importance of Being Earnest 3. Born Yesterday 4. The Merchant of Venice (I could see “Driving Miss Daisy” or “Arcadia” slipping into this category, but “Heart” and “Earnest” are locks. My money is on “The Normal Heart” for the win.)
Best Revival of a Musical 1. Anything Goes 2. How to Succeed… (I think this is an easy win for “Anything Goes”)
Best Actor in a Musical (dependent on placement for all acting categories) 1. Daniel Radcliffe, How to Succeed… 2. Norbert Leo Butz, Catch Me If You Can 3. Josh Gad, The Book of Mormon 4. Tony Sheldon, Priscilla QOD 5. Benjamin Walker, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (Andrew Rannells could take the last spot here, as could Aaron Tveit if he is placed in this category. Call it the Hugh Jackman effect, but I foresee a Radcliffe victory)
Best Actress in a Musical 1. Patina Miller, Sister Act 2. Sutton Foster, Anything Goes 3. Donna Murphy, The People in the Picture 4. Sherie Rene Scott, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Since there will only be 4 nominees in this category this year, I think Beth Leavel will be snubbed, but could swap places with Ms. Scott. Janet Dacal could sneak in here if some Tony nominators loved “Wonderland”, but having seen it, I don’t quite know how they would)
Featured Actor in a Musical 1. Rory O'Malley, The Book of Mormon 2. Adam Godley, Anything Goes 3. Tom Wopat, Catch Me If You Can 4. John Larroquette, How to Succeed… 5. Nick Adams, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (Rory O'Malley is getting a nod and is the front-runner and likely winner)
Featured Actress in a Musical 1. Nikki James, The Book of Mormon 2. Victoria Clark, Sister Act 3. Laura Benanti, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown 4. Laura Osnes, Anything Goes 5. Patti LuPone, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Kerry Butler could ride into this category if "CMIYC" is well-received by the Tony crowd, and Kate Shindle could get a sympathy nod. Nicole Parker or Rachel Resheff from “People in the Picture” could snag a slot, as could Tammy Blanchard or Rose Hemmingway, but the ladies from How to Succeed have been kept out of all the precursor races)
Leading Actor in a Play 1. Joe Mantello, The Normal Heart 2. Mark Rylance, Jerusalem 3. Brian Bedford, The Importance of Being Earnest 4. Bobby Cannavale, The Motherf**ker with the Hat 5. Al Pacino, The Merchant of Venice (I could see Robin Williams, Ben Stiller, Jim Belushi, or Billy Crudup sneaking in and knocking out Cannavale or Pacino, but this is really a two man race between Mantello and Rylance. I’m giving the edge to Mantello since Rylance just won this award recently)
Leading Actress in a Play 1. Nina Arianda, Born Yesterday 2. Frances McDormand, Good People 3. Edie Falco, The House of Blue Leaves 4. Kathleen Turner, High 5. Vanessa Redgrave, Driving Miss Daisy Other Contenders (in order of chance to gain a nod): Lily Rabe (The Merchant of Venice), Cherry Jones (Mrs.Warren's Profession), Hannah Yelland (Brief Encounter) (This category is actually pretty set. The only surprise I could foresee would be Lily Rabe sneaking into the spot I have set aside for Vanessa Redgrave. I think that Nina Arianda will win Best Actress in a Play this year. Frances McDormand will make it competitive, but I think ultimately Nina Arianda will prevail.)
Featured Actor in a Play 1. John Benjamin Hickey, The Normal Heart 2. Robert Sean Leonard, Born Yesterday 3. Yul Vazquez, The Motherf**ker with the Hat 4. Mackenzie Crook, Jerusalem 5. Jim Parsons, The Normal Heart (A lot of other contenders in this field, especially Tate Donovan, Kiefer Sutherland, Patrick Breen, Lee Pace, Chris Noth, and Raul Esparza, but I have a feeling this will be the field)
Featured Actress in a Play 1. Judith Light, Lombardi 2. Ellen Barkin, The Normal Heart 3. Estelle Parsons, Good People 4. Elizabeth Rodriguez, The Motherf**ker with the Hat 5. Renée Elise Goldsberry, Good People (One of the ladies from “Arcadia” or Christina Ricci could sneak into the 4 or 5 spots))
Director of a Musical 1. Casey Nicolaw and Trey Parker, The Book of Mormon 2. Kathleen Marshall, Anything Goes 3. Susan Stroman, The Scottsboro Boys 4. Jerry Zaks, Sister Act (Rob Ashford and Jack O’Brien have minor chances here, but I have a feeling this will be the field with Nicolaw and Parker walking away victorious).
Director of a Play 1. Marianne Elliot and Tom Norris, War Horse 2. Daniel Sullivan, The Merchant of Venice 3. Joel Grey and George C. Wolfe, The Normal Heart 4. Ian Rickson, Jerusalem (Brian Bedford could take the last slot for “Earnest” or Sullivan could be nominated for “Good People” as could David Leveaux for “Arcadia”)
Book of a Musical 1. The Book of Mormon 2. The Scottsboro Boys 3. Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson 4. Sister Act
Score of a Musical 1. The Book of Mormon 2. The Scottsboro Boys 3. Sister Act 4. Catch Me if You Can
Choreography 1. Kathleen Marshall, Anything Goes 2. Rob Ashford, How to Succeed… 3. Susan Stroman, The Scottsboro Boys 4. Casey Nicolaw, The Book of Mormon
No Daniel is not an actress. ( Daniel for best actor). But Foster is not acting in a show she just smiles and sings and thinks that is enough for a tony.

These things always crack me up because inevitably there will be that one person who everyone deems worthy of a nomination who won't get one, and then that one person nominated who no one expected. And no, I won't give examples. We ALL know those cases. Anyway, carry on.......
"Don't f*** a baby. I'll get rid of your AIDS. If you f*** this frog."
I must be the only person hoping for a "how to Succeed" vicstory for Musical Revival. I had so much more fun at that show than "Anything Goes," which I found pretty listless.
Am I the only one who thinks Scottsboro and Bloody Bloody have serious chances at nominations for Best Musical? (On another note, imagine if these two were still running, the serious competition we'd have this season)

bmwpjager you are not the only one. If those two shows were still running, Priscilla & Catch Me wouldn't stand a chance. Especially with all of their critical acclaim. Unfortunately the politics of it all deems that shows that can pull in $ will be nominated regardless of how good they are. Since they're both closed all they'll probably do now is be mounted by regional theaters. Its really a shame, but I am holding out a rose of hope.
"Don't f*** a baby. I'll get rid of your AIDS. If you f*** this frog."
You are not the only one. I think Scottsboro Boys was great. I bet it gets a couple of nominations, for sure. I think Elf will even get a couple of nominations because so many of the current running shows are less that brilliant.
