Yes, uber low quality is surely what turned her into a 9-time Tony winner. Art is of course subject, so what you view as "quality" is certainly your own prerogative.

Oh, but I see you also describe her shows as cheap. Are you instead then referring to the merits of the actual production elements when you say quality? Because they look cheap? In that case, was it the $33.5 million capitalization of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child that you found "cheap"? Perhaps the $27 million capitalization of New York, New York?

If you don't know what you're talking about, it really is perfectly fine to just NOT post and listen to others for bit.

The first words that come to mind when thinking about the $35 million CURSED CHILD and $25 million NEW YORK, NEW YORK are "cheap cheap cheap."

Same with those cheap cheap cheap small-cast plays like LEOPOLDSTADT (38 actors), THE FERRYMAN (31 actors) THE INHERITANCE (30 actors), and the Rylance Shakespeare plays in rep (19 actors).

Get a grip.

Cant stop cackling at this. On the one hand we have lauded, objectively successful, legendary Broadway producer with a wikipedia page of credits and awards a mile long, and on the other hand, we have BroadwayFlash, unable to string together a single factual sentence to save their life. Tough call!

I’m thinking mostly of her musicals when I say that. Yes I think many people would agree that her musical productions have not been good.  NYNY is one of the worst things I’ve seen on Broadway IMO

New York, New York had a lot of problems but looking cheap wasn't one of them.

New York New York didn’t even have an out of town tryout and was fast tracked to Broadway.  $$$

Yes the quality of her work and productions can’t hold a candle to Back to The Future and The Great Gatsby.   I read these posts just to laugh at the nonsense this person brings every day.  It’s hilarious.

I am sort of fascinated by the recent strength of Hadestown, in part because I really enjoyed the musical when it opened on Broadway in 2019 and wondered how long it would run. Even when the box office was weak, after the show reopened during the pandemic, it would consistently come close to selling out - which made me wonder if it was becoming one of those shows that tourists will check out because it’s a familiar name.

That seems to be playing out with some smart recasting decisions. It also doesn’t hurt that the show is pretty flexible about what types of actors can play certain roles, and that it’s based on a classic story.

So now the question is whether the producers can keep this up. I don’t have the foggiest idea, but I wouldn’t rule it out. The original cast is gone, theaters are full of new shows, and Hadestown is in strikingly strong shape. I don’t doubt that Jordan Fisher’s presence helps, as he does have a fan base, but it seems like it might be more than that.

I am curious what shows have followed Hadestown’s path to longer-term success. How long, realistically, can it run?

Question and I know this is a dicey subject online.  But I belong to  a couple of subscription papering services and have been utterly shocked at the lack of offers for low attendance shows: e.g. Lempicka, Rock & Roll, Patriots, Suffs, even Water has some performances at 30-40% capacity.

Curious to know where you friends are getting their comps? is it a friends of the cast or community groups that are getting tickets?

Thanks

There you go again with your flip-flopping. Didn't you originally say you LOVED NYNY? Again, this is why no one can take you seriously!

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

You're already getting comps, and you're asking for another way to get comps? A bit greedy, don't you think? Give other people a chance.

Those average prices were in holiday weeks. The only way those average prices are going up are: (a) if it gets spectacular reviews and /or (b) it somehow defies the odds and catches on in a huge way with some sizable demographic, a la SIX.

Gatsby did a promotion for $50 tickets for (I believe) the first days of previews. I think the average ticket price this week likely reflects that.

I’m also just noticing it had 7 performances. Had it been an 8 show week I believe it would have been the highest grossing of all the new musicals this season except for Back To The Future. Not that that means anything necessarily, given I’m sure both those shows have incredibly high nuts and also it was a week filled with tourists. But I’ll give credit where credit is due…people on this Board have been harder on Gatsby than probably any other new musical this season, even with it being off to a pretty good start.

I think we should expect to see less and less Broadway offers on these papering services. And when they do appear, it will likely be quite last minute.

People's perception of quality is affected by its price. There have been plenty of studies on it. If your prices are high, it carries a connotation that it MUST be a good show...even if the customer looking at the prices doesn't really know anything about said show. As last minute ticket buying habits have decimated advance sales, the discounts or comps a show has out in the wild have directly affected their ability to survive and built an audience who will pay full price. If there's discounts freely available for all dates, a customer says "eh, I'll get to this show if I have time. I really gotta make sure I can see this $250 show somehow instead". Comps are even worse. List several weeks of dates on a papering service and you see a decrease in demand. Locals are just waiting for it to show up for free! Many shows and theater companies are trying instead to list comps with affiliated groups since they are a bit less public facing: an organization a producer is affiliated with, a corporate partner, rehearsal studio, costume shop, a partner theater, an industry union...reaching out to these places with a comp offer has become much more desirable because those comp offers arent out in the wild. Their overall perception as "quality" and something "sought after" doesnt take a hit.

I think you can still get some good stuff for off broadway shows, but I agree papering has been very dry recently.  It was extremely good coming out of covid.
And no, I never liked NYNY I was always against it.

When reading Broadway Flash's posts, does anyone else have the thought 'God, I hope they're wearing their helmet today to prevent further damage'?

Just me?

I fear for ORIGINAL musicals.

If you are not based on a blockbuster movie/book or don't have a star - give up!!!!!!!

Don’t give up, maybe the more original musicals are meant to stay Off-Broadway in this new world.

Because it's too much fun reading their inanity. Plus, I think they're pretty much trolling at all times and I think that deserves a little rudeness.

Its average ticket price is still similar to a lot of other musicals that rely on discounting to keep them going.  For new shows that rely on discounting, unless they end up getting great reviews (if still in previews) or successfully attempt stunt casting, the likelihood of the average price going up significantly is pretty low…I think the thing it accomplishes is getting a better run, which then increases the probability of touring / regional theatre opportunities.  To me, Gatsby needs great reviews to have a chance at its average price goi g up materially, which it will need if it has a prayer of returning its investment.

Here’s the problem with that, and I’m not singling you out. A string of posts denouncing someone makes the entire thread unreadable. It becomes as tiresome as the person’s posts.
