I agree with some am confused with the general consensus about other categories and will say, I think (as has been discussed on about a hundred other threads) that Orfeh is going to pull the big "upset" as will Audra McDonald. Although, I don't think outside of this board, anyone would be *that* upset. I think SA should win but Mary Poppins might and pretty much all the non acting awards are going to go to SA and COU. Pittu has a strong chance and Raul and Cerveris might split the vote and it goes to Pierce. I also think Julie White will best, Best.
"Cerveris may very well be better, LaCage, but he DID just win..."
Past Tony wins shouldn't determine whether or not someone deserves an award. Each role is individual of one another. If your the best, you should get it.
"We like to snark around here. Sometimes we actually talk about theater...but we try not to let that get in our way." - dramamama611
My predecition of Cerveris winning is probably my longest shot of winning, and I believe I'll get that category wrong. That said, my reasoning for picking him is
1) I do believe his was the best performance out of those 5 men. 2) Doyle's SWEENEY TODD not only lost Best Revival of a musical but failed to win any of its deserved actors (Patti, Michael, Manuel) their top prize either.
But it's hard this year because WILL the Tony Voters reward Company for failing to reward ST? They've certainly done that in the past (Brian Stokes Mitchell.) Or are they really turned of by Doyle's gimmick? One would think they werent since they awarded him best director last year, but then my philosophy of the more traditional Broadway Razzle Dazzle taking the Revival category comes into play.
For now I'm sticking with A CHORUS LINE for Best Revival, although I think in my heart of hearts that COMPANY should win. The Michael Cerveris prediction may change in the next day or two, we'll see. Those 2 categories along with lead Actress in a Play are the hardest to pick IMO.
We can only hope that the voters vote for the BEST and not mire everything in political nonsense or sentimental crap and/or, not giving it to someone "who just won last year" but that's never the case now is it?
IMO, Audra is giving the BEST performance for female musical lead, IMO Orfeh is giving the BEST performance in female musical featured, IMO, Julie White is giving the BEST performance for female lead in play, IMO SA is the BEST new musical. If I were voting, that's how my conscience and common sense and taste would vote. How it will all turn out next Sunday is anyones guess but if they really do go to the BEST, many of the repeated predictions on this board will be wrong.
Musical: Will: Either Mary Poppins or Spring Awakening Should: Mary Poppins Reason: Curtains is an old fashioned musical, Grey Gardens is reminiscent to an old musical, and Spring Awakening is fresh and new. However, Mary really has all of those elements, with it's old fashioned story and book, it's slightly new songs, and it's fresh and amazing choreography and desgin.
Leading Actress: Will: Either Christine Ebersole or Audra MacDonald Should: Laura Bell Bundy Reason: laura is such a talented actress who really puts her time and effort into these roles. Plus, if Mary does win choreography and Grey Gardens wins costumes, Legally Blonde should win something.
Leading Actor: Will: Raul Espraza Should: Gavin Lee
Featured Actress: Will: Most likely Mary Louise Wilson Should: Ofreh Reason: Like the last two year's previous wins for his award, Ofreh brings fresh and exciting acting and singing to this role, which really is a show stopper.
Featued Actor: Honestly, no idea. I would like Christian borle, but that probably won't happen
Book: Will & Should: Grey Gardens
Score: Will: Spring Awakening, unless the comitee wants to honor Curtains Should: Legally Blonde or Grey Gardens Reason: They both have great scores which really stay in your mind as you leave the theatre. Plus Legally Blonde really deserves some sort of reward for creating what many people thought was an impossible task.
Director: Will & Should: Michael Mayer
Choreography: Will: Mary Poppins Should: Legally Bonde Reason: While Mary does have ome incredible moves and special effects, Legally Bonde really does stand out in my mind.
Costume: I can see Grey Gardens winning, but Lgallly blonde does have some of the greatest costume changes in theatre. Either one would be fine.
Set: Bob Crowly, no question
Lighting: I would love to see Mary go home with this award, for their lighting has really swept me off my feet. However, it seems that SA is going home with this award this sunday.

Best Special Theatrical Event Jay Johnson: The Two and Only! --------------------------------------------------------------- i really have no clue what is going to take choegraphy, because you got MARY POPPINS which is the big and flashy kind of dancing; you got CURTAINS which is more old-time type of dancing; SPRING AKAKENING which is just...different; and then LEGALLY BLONDE which is Jerry Mitchell choegraphy, after all. so this is the one catergory im TRULY puzzled with.
and with all the predicted wins for THE COAST OF UTOPIA, youd think theyd keep the show at the Beaumont longer or something.

jagfkb- You are an idiot. Why should Laura Bell Bundy win? For smiling, doing a time step and singing a bland song? You call that performing! I want Christine to win, I think 95% of us do, but at leat if one of the other ladies won (Monk, Murphy or McDonald) it'd be for a great performance. Bundy is, quite frankly, awful.
Christine will win. I've seen the show consistently during Tony season and she's turning in some incredibole performances. (hair standing up on back of neck types of performances) I did see LoveMusik with Donna Murphy. She was excellent-the show wasn't. Material-was a great idea, poorly executed-or at least the book didn't quite work. Act 2 was much stronger.
But, in my heart, I really believe Christine Ebersole will get her Tony next Sun.

"Life is a cabaret old chum, only a cabaret old chum, and I love a cabaret!"-RIP Natasha Richardson-I was honored to have witnessed her performance as Sally Bowles.
I haven't given it enough thought to make predictions, but just reading all of the others, and just a few thoughts:
If Gavin Lee ever beat out Esparza, I would cringe..
If Mary Poppins wins for Best Musical, I will lose ALL faith in Broadway.
And just wondering, how many people that have picked Stark Sands to win (I realize most think Crudup will win), have seen "Radio Golf"?
As much as I liked Sands performance, (I actually thought he was better than Dancy- Gaines being the best of a great ensemble), its not in the same league as Chisholm's is.
That's just sad if you lose respect for Broadway just because a musical gets to have a sign outside their theatre that says " Tony Award: Best Musical!" If you like Broadway, you shouldn't let something as pointless as that effect your opinion about theatre..

No, whats sad is the thought that there wasn't a better musical this season according to the voters.
I never said I would let in effect my opinion about "theatre"-
I guess I should have stated that I would lose my faith in the voters.

I know Christine has gotten glowing reviews across the board, but think Audra still has over a 50% chance of winning, since now this just my opinion, but think its a lot harder to successfully pull off a comedy instead of a drama. I know Chrsitine plays two characters and is phenomemnol, but Audra is playing someone who is practically a spinister and is really hard to warm up to, but being the performer that she is makes us care for her and root for her, plus she nails the comedy flat. I also know people want Mary Louise Wilson, but Charlotte and Orfeh could posssibly sneak by because they giving performances that really make you want their characters to succeed whether its Cassie making the line or Paulette becoming confident in herself, sort like Elle in a way.
"jagfkb- You are an idiot. Why should Laura Bell Bundy win? For smiling, doing a time step and singing a bland song? You call that performing!"
No offense, but that's really rude. I happened to meet her by the stage door and, unlike some other nominees this year, she really care about every single person there. I asked her if it's hard doing the show, and she said that it's probably the most challenging on Broadway right now.
