I stand corrected. There are a few in this board who have strong opinions against stage dooring. All I can say to that is that if the artists don't mind it...then that's all that really matters. It is a never ending controversy...more for some than others.

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

He was NOT calling them that, he was repeating what Hogan said in his post (read the whole thread and it makes sense)- He is not saying anything negative about stage-dooring.

Okay, this is ridiculous! How come every single ****ing time somebody tries to start a stage door thread, that it has to be hijacked from assholes like HogansHero. And yes, HogansHero maybe I am calling you a name, how do you like that? Maybe I'm being a little ODIOUS! A message to those who feel the need to ruin stage door experiences and threads instead of just providing the information that the OP asked: do not comment on that particular thread. It is annoying and odious in doing that. Now, HogansHero. I'm sorry that we all have to have this stupid argument with you and have to fight back and forth with each other even resulting in immature "name calling" but here are two words for you and end it: SHUT UP!

P.S. If anyone reading this has any ACTUAL information regarding the Constellations stage door, please step forward. It would be much appreciated.

I agree. I loathe stage-dooring, but the only thing more odious is the people who use any thread asking stage door questions to bloviate about what a wicked practice it is. Do you really think you're going to change hearts and minds here? No. You're just getting off on your own self-righteousness.

Ok seriously, guys? This happened just a few weeks ago on the "Emma Stone Stage Door" thread. Do we really need to have this argument again? If you want to have this argument, start another thread! But also, ask yourself whether this argument is really worth having AGAIN for the trillionth time. I don't agree with HogansHero, but he has every right to express his opinion, and it doesn't mean that we have to rise to his bait and turn this into yet ANOTHER thread about whether stage-dooring is ok or not.

@darreyl102-again, you miss the point. Celebrities who have drivers waiting for them positioned between barricades are not going to blend into the crowd by exiting through a different door. As soon as the crazies see the car at a different place, that becomes the door they crowd. The only alternative to running the gauntlet is to remain imprisoned in the theatre.

A couple of other passing points. (1) If you are going to see a friend after seeing their show, you call or text your friend and they tell you whether to go to the stage door to be let in, or (if it is a crazy celebrity stage door) they tell you an alternate way to get backstage. You don't just stand in the odious crowd. (2) Thank you to all who have advice on how I should post on this site and especially to those who have given me new names for myself. (3) While I honestly don't care if someone feels the need to call me a name, I'd just point out that calling a particular BEHAVIOR odious is not name-calling.

Have a happy holiday everyone, and think of me at New Year's resolution time. Jake Gyllenhaal Stage door

@ HogansHero - I don't miss any point- because you don't have one! WHO said anything about them having a car waiting for them at a side door? I NEVER said anything about a Car- Sorry, I can't continue to talk to people who put words in others mouths. I'm Out!

"It's curious that Fisherman calls people who stage door..."odious". "

As was pointed out, Hogan was the one who called them odious. I've stated repeatedly, if both parties are willing to engage, then that's great. But I guess Patti was too busy wetting himself with excitement over who the new 4th alternate Roxie will be for the 19th national Chicago tour to actually read what I wrote.

Stage door johnnies are part of the Broadway theater-going legend! Without us, there would not have been "All about Eve." Big diff between those who wait after a show to let their fan geekdom show and I'll-mannered "boors"*who snap photos or cause a commotion during a performance. Inside a theater is sacred grounds; stage door exits are where we let our appreciation and inner geek flow.

Stage dooring comes with the territory. Always has; always will. Yes, they don't HAVE to do it but if actors are so annoyed by it they should find another line of work. (Then again, where can you find a part-time job that pays so much money?) It makes as much sense as working in a stable and getting mad if you get sh!t on your shoes.

He stage doored on Opening Night. There were only about 8 of us who had seen the show at the door (2 left before Jake Gyllenhaal came out, and only 4 of us were there for Wilson). There were 10 or so paparazzi/random picture takers and people just wanting Gyllenhaal and Wislon to sign photos of themselves. None in that group had seen the show, and their group grew by two photographers as we waited for the stars to come out.

All the paps and signature hounds were to the right as Gyllenhaal came out the door (on the Eighth Avenue side of the barricade). As the door opened, they could see him and they started yelling his name, and he almost bolted. Then as he got close to his car, he saw the Playbill holding people to his left (on the lobby side of the barricade), and he doubled back for us. But, because he had a party to get to and was trying to avoid the paps and signature hounds, he didn't do pictures. He was soft spoken, kind, and moved through the 6 of us that were there really fast.

Ruth Wilson signed for the signature hounds and posed for some quick pictures with them. Then she crossed over to those of us who had seen the show, talked a bit, signed, and took photos with anyone who wanted them. The signature houndss and paps asked for more from her, but her escorts told them "Sorry, Ruth has to go," and they whisked her away.

All in all, it was a pleasant stage door experience. The signature hounds and paps definitely almost ruined it for those of us who has the seen the show, which was frustrating. Hopefully, they won't be as much of an issue now that they are officially open. But, it may.

And I really and truly cannot blame any one in any show for not wanting to be bothered by people who didn't see the show. When I staged doored for DISGRACED, two random girls walked up and asked Josh Radnor for signatures and photos. He saw they didn't have Playbills, and he told them, "Come see the show, and I'll gladly take a photo with you and sign stuff for you."

Go Josh Radnor! I wish Emma Stone did this with CABARET. When I went, some entitled girl asked me if she could have my spare Playbill (I grabbed one for a friend in addition to the one I had) and I told her its easy to get one if she sees the show...The face she gave me. That same girl pissed Alan Cumming off by repeated asking for "just one selfie" even though it was 9 degrees out and he was making his way down the line as quickly as possible.

DEClarke, you don't even know how much I hate those autograph hounds. They are the ones who take advantage of celebrities, and just sell pictures and stuff and could potentially spoil the experience for the fans.

quizking101, that's so annoying about the girl at the Cabaret stage door. She should see the show instead of just going to goggle Emma Stone and annoy Alan Cumming for a picture when it was freezing and he obviously just didn't want to take it. I saw the show in September, and while Alan didn't take pictures, he was very nice to everyone and chatted and signed for everyone.

As for Constellations, I have some friends who went and saw the show and stage doored (not the same friends, so these are two different times) and both times they said that Jake and Ruth came out and signed and took pictures and were both very friendly!

Personally, I enjoy stagedooring the shows where there isn't anyone famous in it. The crowds are way smaller, if there's a crowd at all. You can actually have a mini-conversation about the work with actor or artist. They seem to actually be excited to meet the fans. Also you never know who you are going to meet and where their future lies (i.e. the cast of Spring Awakening)

Totally agree but believe it or not sometimes celebrities talk for a bit too (for example Hugh Jackman)!

Oh I've met some very nice celebrities as well. I remember taking my sister for her graduation gift to see the revival of The Threepenny Opera. I'm not sure if it was the day we went or if people didn't care for the show, but we went to the stage door afterwards there was 15 people waiting. No barricades. We got to meet and have our photo taken with everyone in the cast. I got to have a conversation with Cyndi Lauper about her rendition of Solomon's Song. Alan Cummings congratulated my sister on her graduation, asked her what her major was, plans she had after school.

Coolest experience though was after 9 to 5. There was a substantial number of people at the stage door, barricades were up. Alison Janney was coming down the line and I asked her for a photo and my partner took the picture. While he was bringing the camera back to me, after he took the photo. She turns to him and says "What you don't want a picture with me?" He was dumbfounded. She continued "Am I not good enough to be in a photo with you?" So I quickly grabbed the camera and took a photo of the two of them, then as I am coming back to the barricade she continues with him. "You don't want my autograph?" (My playbill was one being signed) She then grabs the playbill out of his hands and signs it. Since this incident he gets a smile on his face anytime we see Allison Janney in a film or television show.

I had an pretty well-known actor in a very high-profile show refuse to sign my Playbill a few nights ago... to be fair, I handed him the Playbill for A Delicate Balance, which confused him since that isn't the show in which he is performing, and once he looked up, he realized that I was just a friend of his pranking him at the stage door. But, that said, facts are facts... he didn't sign it!

I find it hilarious that Hogans is trying to make actors seem like victims.

NEWSFLASH - THEY DON'T HAVE TO STOP AND SIGN JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE THERE. There are thousands of times that actors get out the door and go straight to the car. No one is forcing them to stop what they're doing to appeal to fans. If they feel like doing so, they can. It's not a rule of the job.

I don't see anything wrong with stage dooring, I've done it for a while. I remember Judy Kaye coming out after a performance of Sweeney and going, "oh goodness, it's too cold! come inside and I'll sign whatever you like." I wasn't forcing her or even asking for anything, but she was incredibly kind and personable.

It's all a matter of choice. Fans can show up if they want, actors can sign/take photos if they want. F*CKing relax.

Saw the show over the weekend and decided to stage door. Both Ruth and Jake came out about 30 minutes after the end of the play and signed and took pictures with anyone who asked. Jake thanked us for coming to the stage door to show our support.
