"He pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a minor. Not rape."

BAD ENOUGH.

broadwayguy2, thank you for being a voice of reason.

What Barbour did was BAD. No question. She was only 15, and although the sex was consensual, it was legally and morally wrong.

HOWEVER, it was what - thirteen years ago? I mean really. He has paid the price legally, professionally, and I'm sure socially as well. The stigma will always be with him. If you Google "James Barbour actor" (go ahead, try it), what you immediately see is not YouTube clips of him singing, but articles about his conviction. Everyone knows what he did, and always will.

He will always be "that Broadway guy who had sex with an underage girl." So let him be The Phantom for nine months or whatever. He has still basically lost at the game of life.

BTW, anyone think it's ironic that his last role was Jean Valjean? There might be some parallels there. Just sayin'.

"Convicted rapist" is still a pretty bad thing to have on your record."

It is. But, since he doesn't have that on his record, perhaps suggesting that is not the best thing to say.

Perhaps he doesn't have "rapist" on his record, but the fact remains that he was sexually involved with a minor. People still have a bad view of him because of what happened.

Why didn't they hire Stephen Collins? At least he is a name!

People have a bad view of him less because of what he DID and more because of loud mouth idiots saying inaccurate and inflammatory things with no bearing on the facts of what happened.

I agree broadwayguy. People are attacking someone but they are ignorant of the facts (calling him a felon, rapist, pedo). People should do their research but we all know they won't because....drama.

I saw Phantom with Norm, so I'm good for the rest of my life. I doubt this will affect ticket sales.

Dame, I am not telling people not to talk. Far from it. I am telling people to learn what they want to speak about rather than breed and multiply ignorance.

Not all people. The facts are very strong on their own. So you are right about that. But people can talk all they want and misinformation will come with that. He is a criminal. He has a record.

@broadway we agree.

Well, now she's a 29-year-old woman with a career in television.

Was there this sort of backlash after it was announced he was in A Tale of Two Cities, which started right after his sentencing

Sure, but nobody saw Tale. I vaguely remember it even happened.

Phantom is another story. I love his voice, I think he's amazing.

But, who is willing to separate the person from the error when it comes to his profession?

Does his action mark him for life? Is there any redemption or is he just a great singing criminal forever?

I remember hearing from a friend/colleague of his at one point that he "absolutely didn't do it" and took the plea deal because there was no way he'd come out of a trial unscathed whether he was innocent or not.

It was a super, super uncomfortable conversation. But he definitely has friends in the business who don't believe it happened.
