Composer Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Last Five Years) pens his new musical comedy which casts thirteen 13-year-olds dealing with the perils of teens in a middle school in Indiana. While I absolutely love Jason Robert Brown, wild horses couldn't drag me to see 13 teenagers belting out showtunes and trying to screech like Idina.
Unless he made sure they sing in lowered keys.

Posted: 5/5/06 at 1:31pmI don't know what is worse, a whole musical with 13 year olds playing 13 year olds, or a whole musical with ADULTS playing 13 year olds. I hope they avoid all the horrible clichéd pitfalls. I'll keep an open mind. (For once, right?)

Posted: 5/5/06 at 1:42pmI know one of the girls in 13!!!!!!! She's so cute. Her best friend played Mary Phagan in our production of Parade. She sang one of the songs from the show and it sounds like a really cute musical. Her name is Megan, so keep an eye out for her in the show!!!

Is Jason Robert Brown a name you normally associate with fun, frothy musicals though? :P This IS the guy who gave us Parade.
Not gonna lie, I'm filled with dread about this one, but hey, if it ever gets to New York I'll go see it.

Jason Robert Brown is smart enough to know what he is doing...and to know what NOT to do. Something tells me he will find away to make this different, and not Degrassi the Musical.

Don't pigeonhole JRB stylistically. Compare the score of Parade to the lighter half of L5Y. Totally different. He can funny and touching as well as he can be serious. I think that musically this will be wonderful.
The big downside for me is kid performers, which I hate watching. Nothing worse than kids on Star Search or former Little Cosette's belting out and looking "cute."

Just because the score of Parade is rather dark, doesn't mean JRB isn't capable of writing a high energy happy musical. And who knows maybe 13 will have a super surprising tragic ending!!
Composers need to be versatile!!
I will certainly be amused.

Has JRB really done anything bad? Not in my opinion. I'm really looking forward to this.
If anyone, I just feel bad for the stage manager. As an SM myself, I would NOT want to work with 13 teenagers and try to keep them in line!

seriously...
his concert in london in 2004 had a song from 13 sung by a young teenage girl, and it was the best ..the BEST song at that concert....the girl was amazing and totally tore the other West End wendies down....you can expect big...good thinsg from this...and yes
Jason Robert Brown has suffered enough to know what will work and what wont!

If I recall that concert was mainly west end divas? I usually like to keep the term West End Wendies for chorus boys and aflicted drama students lol 
It was a rather good song though. I quite liked the one he did from Honeymoon in Vegas at the most recent London concert.
