I saw it again for the second time too with my parents. My father who was actually the most skeptical and who had read the most on the criticism came out thinking the film was brilliant and also that its criticisms seemed to be overstating the film's depiction of torture and what it is trying to say about torture. Also seeing it again, I actually came out a lot softer on the character Dan. Anybody who sees the movie again needs to watch that particular character because he is indeed haunted by what he did. He tells others to to no longer do what he did for legal purposes and also their sanity.
Bigelow's snub is still pretty irksome. There are followers of the Oscars who think there is a whispering campaign against it. AMPAS member David Clennon, who did not include the film on his ballot at all, openly called for other members to shun it. Why Bigelow and not Boal's screenplay seems to come down to the fact that the people who vote for that category are writers who are not as into 'punishing' nominees when such works come under fire.
I also think Greig Fraser's cinematography should have gotten nominated. But night-vision sequences are not as 'sexy' looking as the camera work in Life of Pi or even Deakins' work in Skyfall (which I think should win). But Fraser's work or the cinematography in The Master easily could have taken the Les Miserables spot- a film where some of the strongest criticism was the camera work.
Argo was a satisfying movie, funny, gripping and smart. I don't see the political objections. It is very critical of what the U.S. did in Iran to the point where Iranian anger against the U.S. is made undeniably clear even in its virulence. Also the film show's the govt was ready at one point to let the six die to cover its ass. This is hardly pro CIA propaganda. The show business metaphor for undercover governmental action is the film's strength. It is a movie with contained ambitions but it pulls it off with style and wit. And any liberties it took with history are easy to reconcile with its appearance versus reality theme.
By the way, Ben Affleck is nominated this year, just not for director. He is a producer of "Argo," so this is his second Academy Award nomination. His first was for the screenplay of Good Will Hunting, which he won (along with Matt Damon).
Also, George Clooney is one of the producers of "Argo," so he, too, is nominated again this year. This is George's eighth Oscar nomination (who knew?). He's won once as well for Supporting Actor (Syriana). So far George has had nominations in the Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, Original Screenplay, and Adapted Screenplay categories.
George has sort of become the new Nicholson for the telecast so I was wondering how without starring in an awards-season film his place in the telecast would work. It was not until the announcements that I was reminded of his producing credits to Argo.

I know ABC will have a pre-Oscar special in a couple hours but is there a network other than E! showing the red carpet live right now? I cannot stand Ross the ex-intern.
I'm watching the CNN broadcast, much less obnoxious than Ross Mathews.
It's gonna be a long night folks! Three hours 40 minutes?

"I cannot stand Ross the ex-intern."
I'm not a fan of his either, so I use the mute button when he appears on the screen.

Anyone know of a good live stream of the show? Florida storm has knocked out my satellite.
Jessica Chastain looks gorgeous.
And Anne Hathaway looks really.... cold.
It's so bizarre watching Kristin Chenoweth on the red carpet.. she's doing a great job though!
She's doing a really good job! Holding her mic weird but still great.
Red Carpet live stream. Not sure they cover the awards though.

Having the Best Supporting Actor decided first will be interesting (though not unusual).

Ok gang, I'm actually excited for this years broadcast.
I can't wait to log on after the show and read all your humorous, bitchy, and spot-on observations.
Here are my picks for the big 6:
Argo
Spielberg
Day-Lewis
Riva
Lee Jones
Hathaway
I have very little confidence in any of those (except Day-Lewis and Hathaway)!
From what I've seen, best dressed include: Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway. Also liked Adele and Octavia Spencer.
Best dressed (and best looking) couple: George Clooney and his date (who is she?).
Ebert changed he predictions to SLP and Riva which sent shockwaves on Twitter. Harvey with a three-peat though?
Cloonster's date is Stacey Keibler. She looked great last year too.
Most entertaining first 15 minutes in a long, long time.. Just hope they carry the Shatner bit throughout the whole show. Works imho!
And everyone's Oscar ballot is suddenly off by one.
Favorite tweet so far--Cole Escola: "How about this: Anne Hathaway is allowed to either win the Oscar or give a speech, but she can't do both. I think that's MORE than fair."
This is going to be a loooong night.
