"Unqualified" is such an unfair word. Who even is qualified to give testimony about a normal phone call that turned into the last words Trayvon said to anyone who wasn't the defendant.
An ear-witness such as Jeantel is qualified by what she heard, not by whether her English grammar is perfect. (Again, it didn't bother me.)
Gaveston,
All that blah, blah, blah about her being illiterate and unqualified to bear witness sadly harks to the era of poll taxes & literacy tests in the Old South. The reason her choice of words was troublesome for me is because I was raised to not give someone a stick to beat me over the head with. Perhaps that's why my youngest brother is quick to remind me "you do you ok".
A few colleagues and I agreed earlier today that the elephant in the room is the class divide that has emerged among blacks in the USA. My heart goes out to Rachel even more now that I'm well aware of several sheep of the fold who were outright embarrassed by her somehow believing that her showing reflects badly on them. It's a group that I've often found myself at odds with for a number of reasons. But, that topic deserves its own thread.
I'm left wondering how credible Rachel would have been found were she a Phillips Andover Academy alumna en route to a tier one school.
javero, I appreciate your concern, but in my book, Ms. Jeantel is nothing to worry about. (She is even better spoken on TV, now that she isn't under the pressure of cross-examination.)
I won't deny being a liberal, but *my* only "agenda" here is my shock that a white juror would be so sheltered as to claim she didn't understand Jeantel's vocabulary.
As I said above, I don't claim to be an expert on urban Miami dialect (and FTR I don't usually listen to rap or hip hop), but Jeantel said nothing that required translation to me.
(BTW, she told Sharpton on his show that part of her "attitude" when the defense attorney asked her if she understood English was that she had freely spoken to defense counsel for months before the trial and the attorney knew perfectly well she has no trouble with English. I think she picked up on his condescension and bristled in response. Probably not the best way to handle it, but she is what, 19?)
(BTW2, congratulations on your fluency in three languages. Very impressive!)

I think her attitude and her whole demeanor were probably brought on by extensive drug use. Trayvon was her friend and he was a drug user (and in fact had tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the active ingredient in marijuana, in his system the night of the shooting).
Remember that TV commercial with the egg in the frying pan? "This is your brain on drugs."

And there are facts this is based on?

Yes, mikey is the perfect example of a fried egg.
Which came first? The fried egg or the judgemental chicken?

"I HAVE PROOF! YOU ARE WRONG!!!"
PROVE mikey WRONG!!!! You CAN'T!!! You can't PROVE she's not a longtime drug user.
He won! WON!!!
That's exactly what he's saying in the picture above.
He has crazy yolk eyes.
mikey,
I think I'll go with Gaveston's suggestion as he or she admits to having no agenda. Just curious though...how would I know if Rachel Jeantel or you have ever been under the influence of marijuana absent self-disclosure or testing? It appears that you're painting with a broad brush.

Okay, Mikey, you're losing me on that one. Unless you were being facetious, in which case I'd counsel against it since you are not allowed to be; only they do that.
You were actually with him, at some point?
Even if you want to use the tweets as proof that Rachel drank and smoked (she's 19. 19 year olds can exaggerate in terms of drinking and smoking), I'm curious about why you think that that is why she has the demeanor and attitude she has. Willie Nelson could smoke her out of house and home and still carries himself rather well.
It embarasses me that in this nation's education system, judgemental teachers who think such things about people exist, like you,
sir.

In case anyone wondered what Ted Nugent thinks about all this

When she testified on the stand, she had that very flat, monotone, dull. lack of expression, mumbling in a low voice. Very typical of drug-users.
Also, the fact that Trayvon was a drug-user and they were good friends. People usually hang around people who share their interests and activities.
BTW, I am not stating as a FACT that she was a drug user (though I am stating as a FACT that Trayvon was); I am simply stating a conclusion that I have drawn. That is my OPINION. (Yes, I am allowed to have those!)

I began my post with these words, "I think...."
Don't hurt your brain doing too much of that, Mikey.
Thanks for sharing Wynbish but I can't bring myself to read anything pertaining to Ted Nugent's thoughts on the trial. That trial has made me un-friend so many long-held Libertarian friends due to their right-to-carry zealotry, generalizations of Trayvon Martin's circle of friends, and inevitable nexus with the POTUS. I owned a gun once while residing in PA but the stand your ground laws in most states strike me as more trouble than worth and duplicitous. And what the POTUS has to do with the price of tea in China is beyond me.
FACT: Not everyone who has a flat, monotonous, dull, expression-less tone or demeanor when on the stand in a murder case she became a part of by answering/making a phone call acts that way because of drug use.
See? I love facts, too!
Sir!
This may have been posted already, but in case it hasn't...
I've never been a huge fan of Piers Morgan, but this clips is AWESOME.

It's also typical of people with low self esteem, which I wouldn't doubt she has. She has made it cleare that Trayvon was not her boyfriend. He was just a friend -- the only one at schoool who did not pick on her. I'm with her on this one.

Why do you have to be with someone? Why can't you just let things be?
