What about EVITA?
It's easier to list the musical adaptations that worked rather than the ones that didn't.
haha, you're right, Taz. Should we do that?
Yeah, I was thinking that, too...ever since the post that said, "Every musical except MY FAIR LADY was the worst"!
I didn't enjoy "Guys and Dolls." My high school did it my senior year, and it was good, but I saw the movie and it was horrible. Even Frank Sinatra couldn't save that one for me. Marlon Brando was just duller than dirt.
Aw, I LOOOOOOOOOOVE "Evita"
The two adaptations that I love but general consensus is that they suck:
Gypsy (although the movie was my first exposure to the material)
Hair (I just love this movie)
I love HAIR too
"Man of La Mancha is so dull I forgot to include it."
By now it should be obvious that Sophen Loren should NEVER do another musical.
I would like to add HAIRSPRAY to the list.
I vote Paint Your Wagon the worst, by far. I love Man of La Mancha because I think it's hilarious in its awfulness.
And taz, I genuinely love Hair. LOVE.

"To qualify for the list of WORST, they have to be such stinkers that NOBODY likes them."
Nonsense. The list if of the WORST MOVIE MUSICAL ADAPTATIONS, and CHICAGO and MY FAIR LADY qualify, popularity notwithstanding. They represent the opposite end of the movie spectrum. Marshall's film is a travesty of up to date flash-cut stupidity, and Cukor's film is a big plodding old-fashioned dinosaur, with no life whatsoever, a big rotting stinking corpse of a movie.
CHICAGO and MY FAIR LADY -- the two worst musical adaptations of all time. Oscar winners for Best Picture.
Well, I love them both.
I'm going to have to go with "The Wiz."

"Well, I love them both."
Love them, hate them as you will. Not cool to say they don't belong on the list because of popularity.
Ah, Reginald, THE WIZ. Almost entirely unwatchable, except for Ted Ross and Mabel King. A rare misfire from Sidney Lumet.
Lumet also did that remake of Gloria but his larger body of work definitely makes up for those few misfires, The Wiz most definitely a misfire.
From that list ... A Chorus Line.

We also forgoted the Phantom from the Hopera.
Deserves at least a(dis) honourable mention.

question about the Producers movie musical... i quite enjoyed it and can't quite understand all the hatred for it... anyway..
was the movie designed to look like a stage musical? that was my only problem with it really... they should've just filmed it like they did with Rent Live
I actually liked the Phantom movie. The visuals were perfect. It took the 'staginess' of the show and set it in a way that seemed more real without losing the operatic scale. As for the casting... well... not exactly brilliant. But as much as I disliked Gerard Butler the first time I saw the film, the more times I see it, the more I find to appreciate and like in his portrayal of the Phantom. (I do think that Emmy Rossum loses some appeal the more times I watch it, though.)

schmerg... i'm with you on your phantom assessment..
i used to think emmy was great in it.. but the more i watch it.. blah.. and Patrick Wilson just looked bored to be in that movie... my main problem with the movie though is the bad dubbing... BAD dubbing... and the fact that the musical numbers are staged rather poorly... Point of No Return was ruined by the dancers... Masquerade was ruined mainly because the lyrics talk about all the colors yet all the costumes were grey or black with a hint of color... oh and like Rent, i hated how some lyrics were spoken... just sing it dammit!
A Chorus Line & Annie.
And, yes, I'd started growing big boy hair inbetween seeing the stage and film versions.

Eeesh, the vile PHANTOM film, wow. Gerard Butler wearing costumes that looked to have been designed for Antonio Banderas. Evidently the Phantom had been receiving regular visits from a personal trainer, cosmetic dentist, and a mailman to deliver his clothes from International Male. And Butler's ghastly wounded moose bellowing, God in heaven.
I'll confess I enjoyed PHANTOM. The main thing that bugged me was that Mme. Giry had a French accent even though she was surrounded by people presumably speaking the same language she was.
Kind of like Bob Gunton in EVITA.
Or Dame Judi (in one scene) in Nine?
