If it isn't worthy of a nomination then it shouldn't be nominated. Optics or no optics. JMO

That might be true philosophically but it's not always true in reality"
Yes, we know this. That is why I said JMO - Just My Opinion.

Totally agree. The Wiz will be nominated. For all the reasons you state plus it’s still open. It’s so much fun and much improved since Tour.
So, is the Tony admin committee REALLY going to make us wait all the way until the 26th to find out all their rulings? It's absurd that there has only been one announcement. And they apparently met early last month (when it leaked that they put Appropriate in revival) yet they didn't make any announcement on decisions at that time? Strange. If they don't release another round of decisions soon, the press release on the 26th is going to be a mile long.
We still need to know lead/featured placements for The Notebook actors, Betsy Aidem, Ali Louis Bourzgui, Spamalot actors, etc. There's a lot to get through before they have all the considerations for the last minute openers (ie: Illinoise actors lead or featured? Is Mary Jane new or revival?)
I'm really hoping that rulings come out today or tomorrow, but I haven't heard a peep.
Then why on earth has this person not been removed, because this kind of language should not be tolerated!
The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince
Looks like the Mods deleted Flash's racist post. Good first step, now Mods, do the right thing and REMOVE him permanently!

^^ leaving Tommy out of Revival is a surprising prediction. I feel like it's nearly as much of a lock as Merrily and Cabaret (albeit with no chance of winning).

being the only musical with a predominantly (blank) cast isn't a reason something should be nominated if it's not actually a good production, the critics are going to slaughter it as the bus and truck tour stop cash grab that it is
Isn't Hells Kitchen largely people of color? Obv I haven't seen it yet.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Yes, it’s mostly people of color (and not just Black, the ensemble is a good mix).
It’s interesting we don’t talk about Here Lies Love as the “diverse” option, even though it was historic in its all-Filipino casting. It got much better reviews than most other shows. (By the way, this won’t be eligible for Best Orchestrations since there really weren’t any due to the heavy use of prerecorded music. I don’t believe there’s even an orchestrator credited.)
I think since this season is all over the place, and since nominators and voters have to see everything in order to vote, I think we might see representation from closed shows and even some surprise winners. It might not be spring-heavy like we think. I personally would love to see Kelli and BDJ as eventual winners; they gave the performances of their careers.
If nominators love Illinoise, I expect at least one of the performers to be nominated, and it might be a frontrunner in the Orchestrations category (because you can see them!).

I am not expecting great reviews as I feel they may have tinkered with it a bit too much. No Toto, no Flying Monkeys. They replaced and added a few songs. It annoys me that they replaced "I was Born on the Day Before Yesterday" with "You Can't Win". And with no Toto, is Toto even mentioned in this production? Just my random thoughts.

Genuinely curious since I'm not well-versed in this area, but I wouldn't think that the prerecorded music negates there being an orchestrator for the show, since theoretically someone would still have to decide which instrument played which melodic line and everything even in the prerecorded music. On their website Matt Stine and Justin Levine are credited for "Music Production & Additional Arrangements" so could they also be put into the slot of orchestrators (I'm assuming David Byrne would be the "primary" arranger)? Though, I don't think HLL would necessarily be nominated for orchestrations regardless but I'm wondering what that category would look like on the ballot.
The prerecorded music in HLL was, of course, orchestrated. Older credits say that Tony Finno did the orchestral arrangements. But “Orchestrations,” in this sense of the word, is about what is played live in the theatre, or I would assume it does. Regardless, the mess with the musicians’ union is the only thing anyone remembers about the live music aspect of the show. It wouldn’t really be fair to other shows that have the score played live, in my opinion.
I’m surprised they didn’t petition Byrne (or Byrne and Timbers) as the bookwriter.
If we go by opening night credits, this isn’t eligible for Book or Orchestrations. This show is one of the only we have official rulings on. The next eligibility meeting will have about 700 shows considered.
(Conversely, Illinoise is now crediting Justin Peck and Jackie Sibblies Drury with the book of the show.)
The Tony Awards website has launched their "This Season" section which sorts all the eligible shows from the season into the production category they are competing in. Despite not making any announcement about it (so bizarre), Appropriate is listed under Revival of a Play. So it looks to be official!
Curiously, Spamalot, How to Dance in Ohio, Doubt, and Prayer for the French Republic have also been added to these pages even though no announcement on eligibility has been made for those shows. Are they about to send a press release....or did someone just straight up forget to make the announcement? It's truly so strange to have waited so long, especially since it seems they might have ruled on these in January.

I think the various category tabs on this site may be a work in progress. The only one I would trust is All Shows. Two quick example: Outsiders doesn't show up under Best Musical, and Tommy doesn't show under Best Revival of a Musical. Both are listed under All Shows though.
I still need to see The Wiz and Mary Jane, but I've seen everything else either off Broadway (Hell's Kitchen/Illinoise) or on (everything else). So off we go with some nomination predictions (in descending order of confidence):
