I personally think it's great that they only decided to give out 3 acting awards tonight –– too much competition among the actors between Denzel and Andrew and Benedict that there was no need to give out an award.
The whole configuration with the tables in front and then the stadium seating was awkward. I thought it was one of the weaker shows in recent memory as far as it’s conception. The transitions were nonexistent and it was weird how the non televised awards were inserted into the live broadcast. When one of the hosts made reference to the second hour starting I could not believe that it had only been one hour for it had felt like so much longer. The Chris Rock joke WAS mean. She was sitting right there for heaven’s sake. Usually jokes like that are said about people that are not in attendance like the weight gain joke. But Will did snap. It certainly will go down in Oscar history. I did think that Amy Schumer was landing with her humor.
Amy was great (and I loved all the hosts, but it did feel a little 2 vs 1) - but her and Jennifer Lawerence are really good friends so that “fat joke” was def in jest.
Julie Andrews has never hit someone at the Oscars. What a wonderful time that was.
The joke had no class. The violence even less. The worst part of this is that a big part of the population (including posters here) find this kind of behaviour normal. The world is turning into a Zoo, where violence is the only way to express yourself and where hosts of this kind of events descended to dumb roast jokes. The time of real humour, elegance and respect is long gone.
It's a great reminder that you can defend someone without violence. And battery is not excused by an offensive joke.
It's truly shocking how many people defend violence.
What if it was a non famous person going up on stage? What if the comedian was a woman? What if he hit him twice? Where is the line? How about, the line is no violence at The Oscars.
Shameful the producers of the program didn't immediately swoop into action to condemn such a destabilizing and unhinged action.
There's a slow-mo of the slap/punch and Will Smith doesn't even make contact with Chris Rock. Also, why wasn't Will Smith escorted out? That's assault. Just seems staged.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Then the physical offender would have been slaughtered by the media and public reaction, and the host would have dwelled in the victim role. That situation would have fitted the popular narrative. Reality is the other way around.
But of course your example is just figurative. It hasn't happened in 93 years. And will most probably never happen either. The Oscars will probably disappear.

She faired better than Kirk Douglas the last few times he was at the ceremony. Also, she’s recently been making public appearances (CBS This Morning) and with the 50 anniversary of Cabaret, it makes sense. I think she seemed nervous more than anything.

Seems there was some awkwardness with a Bette Davis appearance a year or two before she passed if I remember correctly. I thought Liza looked good.
The slap was so unfortunate for so many reasons one being the escalation of violence seen in Ukraine and USA city streets and subway systems.
The In Memorandum section needs to always show close up photos or clips of the person who passed away. Splitting the focus with a large group of performers does not work.
Does anyone else agree that Questlove has an EGOT ahead of him?
He has a bunch of Grammys and now an Oscar. He has a history of producing broadway shows and was even Tony nominated when Fela was up for best musical in 2010. So I can believe some kind of creative involvement again could get him a Tony in the future.
And as far as the Emmy’s go, there’s tons of categories where he could easily win based on his talents and possible upcoming projects.
I could say the same about Billie Eilish now, just hasn’t shown a big theatre connection - yet.
It benefits the Oscars, whose ratings have been circling the drain for years.
I'll take a line from David Sirota: My thoughts on the Oscar Slap incident are that it’s 70 degrees in Antarctica and what’s left of the livable ecosystem is being destroyed and so we should focus on that.

Another group of men was sexually assaulted/groped by a woman, why was Hall not escorted out?
Wat kind of sewer has the Oscars turned into?"
I found the extreme to which Hall's bit continued to be going to far...I grew uncomfortable. On the other end, it would be interesting to know how the men felt, if this had happened (without consent) with a man groping women, the world would be screaming.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
