Prodigal (ahhh love!!!) and Bare...kinda...It isnt well known enough...I also think that "Man of No Importance" could be more well known.

I don't know if this was ever produced state-side, but "Robert and Elizabeth", about Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. I have the CD and quite like it.

I have a CD of a Canadian musical - Red Lips. The lyrics are horrible, but I love it!

Working???
our school did that about a year ago!!! it was actually pretty good!
I don't know how 'unknown' it is, but I had never heard of it until recently....how about RUTHLESS?
my towns local theatre did that this past summer. it was good, but i ended up passing out shortly into the second act so i i didnt get to see the end
lol
and heres one that i think a decent amount of people on here know, but i had NEVER heard of it til our school did it 2 years ago:
SMILE
not too bad of a show, just not great.

Yay! Working is getting noticed again!
Um...Most everyone has listed off what I know...there's "Oz!" by Tim Kelly, which is a charming version of the Wizard of Oz...and Grand Hotel!

My college did the North American premiere of DRAKULA: THE ROCK OPERA a few years ago. It was awful.

"I, Nephi" - a musical based on the first two books of Mormon. Seriously.
Tune wise it wasn't that bad either (though parts did sound like they where 'inspired' by more famous shows).

Grand Hotel? Unknown?
Nominated for 12 Tonys, won 5.
I saw it on national tour.
I guess everything from the late 80s early 90s could be thought of as unknown because they were overshadowed by: CATS, POTO and Les Miz, A Chorus Line.

IS THERE LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?
RUNAWAYS (Ethan Morden writes rather scathingly about this one in his book about the 70's)
PIPE DREAM
Kopit/Yeston PHANTOM
Excellent: PRIVATES ON PARADE, THE GOLDEN APPLE

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

Oy...I've heard of a lot of these. I guess I really am a theatre nerd. Actually, my school did "Oz!" in Junior High. I think I've been scarred for life after doing that show.
One show that comes to mind for being pretty obscure is "Mario: the Opera" Apparently, a cast recording is now available (covering the first act).
Here are some lists of some obscure musicals with cast recordings. I didn't compile them, but one or two of them were unknown to me.

Wow...some interesting shows listed here, but most of them I have actually heard of...
I love CELEBRATION's score - really great songs!
I'm glad someone mentioned Metro - I've always wondered about this musical - wasn't it a hit in Poland and then translated into English -- I should do more research on it, but it lasted a month or two on Broadway, I think

"Yoduk Story" is new and basically unknown, though it is starting to get attention. It sounds like a emotional, powerful story. I have listened to some sound clips on an offical site, and I really liked them. I am hoping the show eventually makes it to Broadway. From what I have heard, I think the show would deserve it.

Metropolis and Bright Lights, Big City. And since I'm the official creator of the Ain't Misbehavin' community as well as the only member, I'm guessing that show hasn't stood the test of time very well.

What about
Cannibal
written and somewhat acted out by Matt and Trey writers of south park who are currently working on a new musical based around Mormons.
Cannibal has only been approved to be staged in a few places nation wide, its very ridiculas.

A MOTHERS KISSES with Bea Arthur, saw it in Baltimore. I don't think it was the follow-up to MAME she was counting on.
