LOL!
I knew my remark would hit a nerve! I didn't think ljay889 would be the one to bite.. but I knew it would be SOMEONE.
I stand by my statement. Daly was in a unique position for a Broadway Rose of not having "diva" baggage to deal with. She had no fawning fans to appease. She focused a laser beam intensity on the character of Rose, WARTS AND ALL.
Rose is not a nice person. And there is a VERY ugly element to the story of Gypsy. Daly knew that. She didn't soft soap Rose as merely a misunderstood "mother." Nor did she attempt to seduce to the audience as a Kewpie doll sex-pot.
As for her signing, I honestly think she used her vocal limitations more effectively to reveal the character than those who have used their vocal prowess merely WOW their fans.
*kisses*

I'd want to see Tonya Pinkins and Anika Noni Rose as Rose and Gypsy, respectively.
But I just want them to have their own production - not replacements.
...not that either would happen, but whatever.

Bette hasn't played it on stage because Laurents hated her Rose. And he has full approval and denial of Broadway Roses.

Just after the so-so GYPSY aired with Midler, she did concert tour.
She ended the first half with ROSE'S TURN. NO ONE has knocked that song out of the park like she did.
What didn't work on film was a SONIC BOOM of pure talent LIVE on stage. It really made me reassess Midler as Rose.
Hers is the best "sung" Rose since Merman. But like with so many diva-based Roses.. I always find myself thinking... This person's talent is SO obvious... why isn't she performing instead of June?

Someone else said it in an older thread, but the choices bear repeating:
Cyndi Lauper
Toni Colette
and, as far as the names that keep popping up, I guess Donna, but - MAN - people here are dumb... Idina??? LINDA EDER?????

I'm amazed that no one has mentioned Faith Prince.
She'll be available soon.

Why would that be unheard of for Linda Eder doing it? She's performed the songs in concert and recording the song "Some People", which is included on several of her albums. She's defantely one of the best VOICES on Broadway ever (IMO!).
