I wonder if that role is gonna turn actresses into psychos just like the Joker (which studies were done and proved on this!)
I once heard someone describe her (Ruthie Henshall) singing as sounding as though she's trying to swallow a whole meatball slightly larger than her windpipe. (The same person compared Michael Ball's singing to sounding as though he's sitting on a washing machine on spin cycle and Colm Wilkinson's to a man with a paralyzed lip trying to eat cottage cheese.) --- Schmerg_The_Impaler
Ripley's speech was easily the worst of the night. Quoting JFK at the top of your lungs when accepting your Tony is just a wee bit COMPLETELY over the top. It wasn't a pivotal moment in history, didn't require a pronouncement and a simple, gracious thank you would have sufficed. Typical narcissistic, actorish pretention at its worst.
I think she was choking back tears and trying to get through reading that quote before she started ugly crying so she started shouting. It was weird, intense and certainly created a bizarre moment for her. I was so happy she won though.
After hearing what the show was about and seeing the performance on the Tony's, I thought ... I REALLY want to see this show. Then I saw her performance when she won and was totally turned off. It makes me not even want to go now. What a turn off. How about just graciously accepting your award? Updated On: 6/16/09 at 10:01 AM
Robinycus2, are you saying her acceptance speech made you change your mind about seeing the show?
That seems to me an odd reason for depriving yourself of seeing one of the best performances many people (including, obviously, Tony votes) saw this year.

Are you Paddy Chayefsky in disguise? (did i just age myself)
Alice looked gorgeous last night in that blue dress and her makeup was stunning.
The NEXT TO NORMAL performance was among the best of the evening, in my opinion. Alice Ripley was in perfect voice, J. Robert Spencer sounded much better than he did in the past, and Aaron is always good. I think seeing that performance could definitely convince people to buy tickets to see the show.
Her speech, on the other hand, was atrocious. She really came off as a wacko.
I agree it was a strange speech. We're all guessing, of course, but I'm of a mind with those who felt it was emotion getting the better of her; not a planned diatribe. I don't quite understand the anger some people seem to be feeling about it.
Either way, I think she's giving a stunning performance in the show. It's not as though you're paying to see her give her Tonys speech.
>>Still, it's nice to know that she has a B.F.A. rather than just a B.A. like me...... <<
Same here... I got mine in music but I guess music = ghetto because it's not FINE arts. But making up for it now with my mFa.

This may be the last time I participate in these message boards. It never ceases to amaze me how cruel you all can be on here. I used to LOVE BWW...but you people should all check your manners at the door..I mean really. I came on here, thinking I would see an outpouring of admiration and appreciation for Alice's performance and win last night, and the majority of you can only judge a woman that you don't even know! I am watching this amazingly talented lady (and extremely sweet, I might add) on my TV last night - in total awe of her, and so happy to see her finally get her Tony for a well deserved performance, and all you can think is.."wow, she is psycho"??? Who do you all think you are...I mean seriously? Maybe I'm over-reacting..I don't know, but it just pisses me off that you all can call someone crazy without even knowing them. Whatever..I'm done now.
Most of us love Alice and ARE THRILLED for her deserved win....that doesn't mean her acceptance wasn't a bit odd. And of course we are going to talk about it!
I actually like that some pointed out they thought she was fighting tears...which, for me, helped but her speech into a better perspective for me.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Well, if Alice is "certifiable", than I'm glad that she is - and hope she never stops being "crazy"! She's bold, exciting, and a breath of fresh air! What did you guys want from her speech? Something drab and plain? She isn't Sutton Foster!! Alice has more drive, talent, and spunk in her little finger, than the other nominees put together. She's in this business for the art of it - not to make a name for herself by being in the next big "movie to musical" show. She's a class act.
No, you're right. I will probably still go. It just made me feel icky about her. I certainly didn't care that she won after that speech. It was more like... Ok, whatever! I get turned off by people who are self absorbed and she seems to reek of it. I've met two kinds of actors in my life and she seems to be in the one camp that I usually steer clear of.
haha...I knew someone would say that. I guess what I said could sound rude. My main point in saying that is simply, if Alice stands out, it's because she should stand out.
Well, ARN1, as you can see from my posts on the subject, I'm a great admirer of Ripley's, so we can certainly agree on that.
To Robinycus, I know how someone can, in a single moment, put you off. I've never gotten the impression that she's more self-absorbed than any other actor. But again, even if it's true, she really is giving a stunning performance, and if you were interested before, you shouldn't let one emtional moment deter you. Honestly, lord only knows what might come out of my mouth in a moment like that.
That's an excellent point, Reg. Giving a speech after winning a TONY has to be crazy in itself.
And honestly, Robinycus, I'm surpised you get the "self-absorbed" feeling from Ms. Ripley. To me, she always seems so humble, especially compared to many other actors. I, too, hope that it doesn't stop you from seeing the show.
I actually enjoyed her performance in N2N and thought she deserved the award. Now, I missed seeing her acceptance live so I saw the response on her and youtubed her and saw it and realized she was speaking loudly but not screaming her head off like a maniac. But that acceptance was out there and perhaps because people spend the time thanking others that when someone does something "next 2 normal", it will stick out. Olivo didn't thank that many people but she also didn't start speaking really loudly.
And you seriously need to go on meds if you come on message boards and take things so personal that technically, do not apply to you!! I have my admirations for individuals but my God, Im not going to jump off a bridge if people start bashing them.

I actually thought it was pretty funny that she started yelling, and I have to agree with the people who said she hadn't been expecting to get so emotional.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.
