I get turned off by people who are self absorbed
As Margo Channing sings in Applause, "Welcome to the theater."
It sounded like she was doing her acceptance speech in character.
I definitely agree with you aliceripleysnumber1. :) Alice is the personification of grace and humility at the stage door and in person. She was obviously extremely moved last night, and that came out in the speech. And like Reg said, who knows what would come out of any of our mouths (and at what volume) in that situation.

"Nobody cares about your BFA, Alice.
It was a hot mess. She was all over the place with that damned speech of hers. They should have cut her off much sooner."
Alice came off as crazier than Britney!
This was the one point in the show where there should have been mic problems!!
For those who love Ripley and her work, the speech can be written off in many ways. The excitement of the moment, the fighting back tears, being in character. To the tens of hundreds of rest of the television audience who tuned in last night, and managed to stay tuned after the opening number, Mama Mia, and one of the Billys convulsing with a hurt leg, her barking an acceptance speech is going to off putting and deemed crazy.
True, Lotte...people who attempt to defend others from uncalled for bashing need to be on meds. lol "Xanax is my favorite color, how'd ya know?"
I dunno. I like my divas a little but crazy but non-toxic.
I enjoyed the speech and found the larger point she was making very inspiring.

Fair enough. But the plebes eat that stuff up. "LOL THIS CRAZY LADY IS SO ~THEATRICAL~. YOU GET IT, GURL." Perhaps her kitschy craziness can combine with Tv8's conventional good looks to draw in a fair amount of 16-25 year olds.
Plus, when you're only a very casual theatregoer, and you haven't seen the performance the person is accepting an award for, you're bound to space out on most of the acceptance speeches. She at least made people pay attention, for better or worse.

"It wasn't a pivotal moment in history, didn't require a pronouncement and a simple, gracious thank you would have sufficed. Typical narcissistic, actorish pretention at its worst"
Completely correct. I know nothing about her performance in the actual show, but this speech was so annoying that I wouldn't want to spend a couple of hours in a theatre with this woman.
Your loss to miss an amazing show and stunning performance.
Just watched her speech again on youtube. I concede that she wasn't as crazy as my initial impression last night, but her speech was extremely disrespectful of the other nominees.
As if N2N was one of the great achievements in the history of the arts, while the other nominees were lesser somehow.

Wow.
I think it was pretty obvious that she wasn't planning to get up there and begin shouting the quote at all.
She is probably, as others have said, one of the most humble and gracious actors working on Broadway today. And she is turning out a performance in Next to Normal that will become iconic.
But whatever. Miss an excellent show. Be completely petty.
That was my favorite part of the Tony's when I saw Sutton clap!

Ok, I probably would still go see the show. I love theatre too much to be that petty. And from what I've read on the boards, many people say she's terrific. But her acceptance speech did bother me. That exaggerated air of self importance is just such a turn-off.

Reginald Tresilian: Some people criticized her in a video of her singing "Meadowlark" on YT. She replied to their comments, basically defending herself and saying that she'd like to hear them sing it better.
Not really an incident, true, but I couldn't think of a better word for it.
Can someone post a link to Alice talking about Emily Skinner and Facebook?

Her obvious passion for what she was feeling and saying came off as frantic and a bit crazed in the beginning but she eventually regained her composure and got her points across....kind of the same trajectory as the opening number.
Congrats to the Rip on winning and
making a speech people are discussing.
But I guess I am the only one who did not like the dress.
I always think of Alice as being more contemporary, Sure every girl likes to put on a long gown at least once.
I just expected more cutting edge.
And talk about nutty, was Jessica Lange on the sauce?

disagree. i guess you can say she was a little disrespectful, but i think she hopes, as well as i do that N2N is a new type of show that took some daring challenges that worked out for the best to create a truly amazing show. i hope to see more shows like N2N or at least more completely original shows come to the Broadway.

Wait, what happened with Alice talking about Emily Skinner? First I've heard of that.

Don't forget she also told everyone to go see live theater. That was a pretty big chunk of it too, was it not (I'd have to go back to YT and read it again)?
Although I found it weird, I think it was more passionate than crazy...although she had some moments.
Also, it was probably very rehearsed and prepared too.
And...if anyone is trying to defend her by saying that the speech was totally in character or that it worked for the character; you're not making sense!
You don't accept in character...unless you're Sasha Baron Cohen!!!!!!
A little strange. I think she was so loud to overcompensate for her nerves.
