Unless they plan to write her out of GREY'S ANATOMY for a while, there's no way Ramirez could do it.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
-John Guare, Landscape of the Body
The Baker is a tricky role, as he's effectively the piece's straight man. Chip Zien managed to make a lot out of the role, his successors were, I think, far less effective.
The choice I've heard for the Baker should be very good, though not someone I initially had thought as being the role. In hindsight, it makes a lot of sense. If it comes to pass, the revival will have a very formidable cast.

^great to hear it, Kad, especially since I also bit the bullet and just ordered tix.
Radnor, who would also likely not be available, was, my dream Baker. I know I wasn't alone in this. And I think he'd be wonderful with Adams. Ever since I've thought about him doing the role it's been difficult to imagine anyone else. But I'll get over it.
Somehow.
Do you know when they will be announcing the other leads?
having seen the video of the production in london, i keep pictuing sara ramirez. hannah waddingham's interpretation really lends itself to sara's kind of humor. plus: awesome voice. i think idina could be thrilling, as well. and donna is good in (almost) everything she does, so that would be A-OK in my book.

I imagine they'll announce the rest of the cast by the end of next week. The only roles that remain unconfirmed are the Baker and the Witch, and Little Red (who I imagine has a smaller casting pool, considering the vision of the character for this production).
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
By boring i mean predictable and she's even done a similar role before so it's not like seeing someone tackle a composers work that they haven't done before, or a role unlike anything they've ever done before so yes it is boring in that way no offense to Donna intended.
I would love Ramirez as well (I feel like I've said that before), but have zero interest in Murphy as the Witch. Loved her in Passion and King & I, but she wouldn't even be on my radar for this.
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian
I think Donna Murphy is best when she's a little out of her comfort zone. Anna in the King & I, Phyllis in Follies. They're roles that, on paper, she shouldn't be right for or capable of doing. That's when she rises to the occasion and surprises people. It's challenging for her as an actress and performer to convince an audience she can be someone so "away" from herself.
But the Witch seems like something she's either already done before or could do in her sleep. Not much room for the unexpected.
I have no doubt she'll be good and reliable and solid, however.

As far as I'm concerned, Donna Murphy is the Meryl Streep of musical theatre. She will be incredible. I wonder what injury she'll have this time, though.
Christopher Fitzgerald is a perfect choice for the Baker.
Lookin' good so far...lookin' good.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
~ Muhammad Ali
i FORGOT about Murphy as Phyllis. It was breathtaking. But i will tell you one woman i was lucky enough to see audition for both the Witch and the Baker's Wife for the same production, and though she is reputedly a bit wacko, she was simply incredible: little Ms Ann Crumb. Not that she'd sell a ticket but i'd love to see her try either role.
