I’m really surprised that Vosk has already hit the panic button this early. I don’t blame her though. She is trying to drum up support for a show that, by all accounts, didn’t even try to meet, let alone exceed, basic expectations and is getting universally panned. Its gotta be hard when you’re in a show nobody asked for and is poised to fall flat on its ass and close in a matter of weeks.
There have even been rumors circulating that the show might not even make it to opening night because the advance is nowhere to be found and people aren’t pouring more money into a sinking ship.

This show just has everything going wrong and shouldn't surprise anyone if it closes shortly after it opens.

Ugh, I do feel bad for her. I’m a huge Jessica Vosk fan and would literally pay to hear her sing the phone book. I really wanted to see her in a successful show. I don’t think it’s failing solely because people want the movie on stage. I think it’s failing because it’s poorly written.

We live in an expensive world where every dollar is precious. There was and technically still is a very easy solution right in front of them. They should have done everything in their power to add the songs or Bette midler songs. Someone should have just told the original author no- no one wants to see this without the songs.
This is what happens is when no one says no and the muscle as someone said - is the problem.

Vosk is undeniably talented but your dollars would be better spent seeing her in concert or a cabaret show where she calls the shots. It’s kinda hard to watch a belter be constrained by a score that is, charitably, best described as flaccid easy listening with the same couplet rhyme scheme

Even with apparently dismal sales, I would be surprised if it does not make it to opening. Shows just don’t really close in previews anymore (when was the last time it happened?) and opening night plans are already set with the various venues, vendors, press, etc.
I’m not even sure that the lack of the movie’s songs is even the main issue here. The average ticketbuyer wouldn’t really know that. The poor sales from the jump suggest a lack of interest in the title, which is the main selling point of the production. Marketing has been quite poor, as well.

Was at the show last night and the only question I had while watching it is: how is it that Jessica Vosk finally gets to originate a leading role in a new Broadway musical being the ICON that she is, and yet the character she plays cannot get a leading role in a summer stock season? Idk I just find that to be completely unrealistic…
also to the above poster that said her and her younger self played by Samantha Schwartz deserve Tony nominations for the way their carrying this show, I absolutely 100% agree with you

This. The sunk costs would be astronomical, and it basically kills the brand for future licensing and non-eq tour.
The thing is, if the rumors are true that they still have a major investment gap to fill, that puts them in a serious bind. No sane person would invest a dollar in the show as it stands now. Which may mean they need to call in a multi-million-dollar favor from someone who will put up a Priority Loan to get them to opening night…then all the producer revenue from the tour and licensing will go towards paying off the loan. Which probably also will kill relationships with the existing investors. It’s a lose-lose situation.

Yes, this is what we could have had. Yes, more of this creative team. Make your changes now during previews!

Yes, they are in a terrible situation- but one that was certainly predictable. This is seriously irresponsible producing. I feel for the cast and crew. They have been failed.

I read it more as her trying to distance herself from the show. She also keeps talking about the movie and Bette’s influence in interviews.

Ironically, the only reason I saw Beaches was because my husband bought me tickets to her concert in Charleston that ended up getting cancelled because of her run on Broadway. I do wish I could have seen her in concert!

I saw this on Friday and actually kind of liked it. It's earnest and schmaltzy, but that's what I was expecting. I have never seen the movie, so I was able to view the show on its own merits, which I'm sure puts me in a small minority. But the crowd seemed engaged; the woman behind me was crying through the whole second act. I felt feelings.
IDK...I kind of liked this earnest little scrappy piece.

While it's true that its lead producer has no meaningful credits and has shepherded this show disastrously, it's also seriously irresponsible leadership by the Shubert Organization. I know Wankel is on the brink of retiring and turning everything over to Jeff Daniel, and they have a new Creative VP who is a longtime colleague of Jeff from BAA (Jen Costello, who replaced Dessie Moynihan), but how they agreed to BEACHES is beyond me.
As Broadway's biggest landlord, Shubert is also almost singularly responsible for the dearth of new musicals this season. Yes, this stuff is cyclical, and there are good shows in the pipeline, but the shows we got this season were not the only options.
I would love a Michael Paulson deep-dive about what the hell is going on at Shubert.

I saw Beaches Friday night. In Act 2 I was surrounded by tons of people crying. It’s a moving production when it gets out of its own way. The failure of this production falls on the writing and direction. There’s a touching story within it but the construction is all wrong.
Vosk is giving a remarkable performance. It’s worth a rush ticket, but I wouldn’t pay more than that. I paid $45 and was in the second row.

Until Phantom closed the Shuberts really only had one “barn” that they needed to worry about filling. The Broadway is difficult to fill; maybe Great Gatsby is breaking that curse, but I believe the most recent musical to recoup there was Cinderella? Now that the Majestic is open they have two barns to fill and I imagine most shows would prefer playing the neighboring Shubert Theatre.
Not that I think Beaches would’ve done better in the Shubert, but Hell’s Kitchens February extension was based on a stunt casting that dropped last minute. Had it closed in January as originally planned Beaches would’ve opened there. Instead it left them with the Majestic.

That's fair. I don't think it's a must-see. But I don't think it's the offensive train wreck that others are painting it as. I paid $60ish for my TDF ticket and was center orchestra.

This thread has been so much fun. It reminds me of the old days. I mostly have avoided this site for the sake of my mental health because of the posters with severe personality disorders that I just got sick of. But this thread is both funny and informative.

CINDERELLA did not quite recoup, but PROMISES PROMISES did — fifteen years ago. Before that, COLOR PURPLE, SAIGON, and LES MIS.
GATSBY is expensive so their profit margin is low. I’m wondering how close they actually are to recouping the New York production.

I do think this thread is not addressing the major elephant in the room here. Because from my understanding, when this was in the development process they could only get the rights to the book that the movie is based on and NOT the actual movie itself. Which sucks because if you couldn’t get the later option then it greatly limits what the creative team can do to begin with. and at that point why even bother?

People already understand this musical is based on the book. That isn’t the issue. What matters is that the production was able to license Wind Beneath My Wings, which makes it clear they were not completely restricted from the film’s musical world. No producer was going to move forward with a Beaches musical that didn’t include that song, and everyone involved would have known that.
There are also clear examples of shows that secured major pop catalogs when that was the creative direction. Moulin Rouge did it. And Juliet did it. These productions show that if a team wants the music, it is possible to pursue it.
Which is why the real limitation here wasn’t rights. It was the writers choosing to be too precious about their own score. They made the one concession they had to make in order to get the show produced, but they were not willing to build a version of Beaches that reflected the musical identity people associate with a title this iconic. That choice belongs to them, not to the rights situation.
