He will likely stick with CMIYC (which could possibly be both a critical and commercial hit).
I admit I didn't particularly warm up to the Billy Elliot score on CD, but when I saw the show and the score in context, it totally worked for me. And if Elton could win a Tony for Aida, then Billy Elliot should be a cinch. The real competition will be Next to Normal, though probably at the expense of not winning the top prize of Best Musical.
They nominated the sets of Pal Joey and Guys and Dolls and couldn't even throw a nomination to A Tale of Two Cities?
I have never seen such a weak scenic design category.
I'm truly sorry about only a few: Aaron Tveit, Daniel Radcliffe.
All the hubub over the "snub" for 9 to 5. The reviews HERE have been mixed. The official reviews have been MIXED. Seems like the Tonys have the same thoughts on it.
My biggest suprises: Rock of Ages; Contantine, and the asskissing of BE. Two noms in both supporting categories? REALLY?
I can't speak too much for the plays as I haven't seen enough of them to truly judge. I'm hoping to catch Carnage next weekend.
Blaxx I believe somewhere on this board it was said he was leaving in June to do the pre Broadway run or workshop for CMIYC and then was coming back to N2N in september before CMIYC opens on broadway. I could be extremly wrong but I read it somewhere on here.
Ah, didn't know that. My bad.
I bet if 9 to 5 had received 15 nominations, it wouldn't be referred to as "ass kissing". Whose ass is being kissed and why? It can't be the stock response regarding commercialism because 9 to 5 is pretty damn commercial. Is it because Next to Normal is too edgy and not commercial enough? Hmmm...Spring Awakening. Not sure what the point of all this is. I can only assume it is because Billy Elliot opened early in the season and was a front-runner from the beginning that has people in such a state. Occasionally, the obvious choice is simply that: the obvious choice. I saw Billy Elliot in London almost exactly one year ago and I walked out thinking it will win Best Musical. The Olivier Awards apparently felt the same way. And it has not been an unusual opinion.

Hate to say it, BUT BILLY ELIOT only got 15 tony noms b/c it has the homosexuality in it. RECORD PROVES IT

AVE Q (which we all know WICKED show have won over that year) Gay character
SPRING AWAKENING: homosexuality

Um...Cool Mactor.
I am actually rather happy with all of the nominations...
What does Tveit do that even requires a nomination? He runs around the set and sings well? When I say it he didn't really leave a mark and seemed to be phoning it in. And he's leaving right before the Tonys anyways, so what's it matter? Not like he'd be there after to "reap" the benefits of winning the award.

So how do you explain Falsettos?
HAIRSPRAY: Drag Queen
Cross dressing is not homosexuality. The character is not a gay man or a lesbian. There is no homosexuality in the story whatsoever.

Um...better speak for yourself. Have you not met the plethora of Wicked haters around here?
You also failed to mention The Full Monty, Spamalot, The Drowsy Chaperone, The Color Purple, The Wedding Singer and Xanadu.
Your observation may be a very weak case for Best Musical winners in the last thirteen years (with the exception of overlooking Spamalot), but it really has nothing to do with the number of nominations each show has received in those thirteen years. Five Best Musical winners with gay characters (lead or featured) in thirteen years is not a pattern or even a majority.
Those scenic design for a musical nominations are HILARIOUS.
Obviously just a pure and simple snub for 9 TO 5.
Poor them. That show is definitely one of the best new musicals of the year. Very, very upsetting.

That's a relief...
theatreboy:
Although it feels like Sophie's Choice to select one or the other [title of show] Featured Actress, I feel people lean toward Susan for the following reasons:
1. She was with the show from the inception and never played by another actress. In the NYMF production of the show Heidi's character had a different name and was based on an actress who was part of the group earlier in its creation.
2. Susan has a writing credit in the show having written most, if not all, of "Die Vampire, Die."
3. Susan gives a more comedic tour-de-force performance in the show whereas Heidi is more of a songbird.
I've had most of the day to kvetch and whine, so I'll make this as simple as possible.
I'm really disappointed for Daniel Radcliffe and Kristin Scott Thomas, am terribly annoyed with Shrek despite my love for Christopher Sieber, am happy for Billy Elliot even though the NY production can't begin to compare to London, and am thrilled for Hair.
Also, I'm all for any West Wing cast members getting Tony nominations, so congratulations Stockard and love of my life Allison Janney!
How was 9 to 5 NOT nominated for best scenic design?????
Add me to the group of people completely frustrated over the lack of recognition for 9 to 5. I don't understand at all the people who think it was totally undeserving. It was a fast-paced and very funny book, with songs that developed character and moved the plot forward and great, high-energy performances. The only thing I didn't like about the show was the choreography - which got a nomination!
Daniel Radcliffe was unfairly overlooked as well, I thought. His performance in Equus was riveting.
Nominating the three Billys in tandem was a ridiculous decision. If all three of them are equally deserving, that would say to me that none of them brings an individuality to the role. Isn't the Tony supposed to be for the Best Performance, as opposed to
the most-easily-acclimated role for a young actor?
I am buoyed by the votes of confidence for Next to Normal, however, and I hope it takes the lion's share of prizes (but yeah, what's up with the Aaron Tveit snub?!).
Poor SEAGULL....remember when everyone loved you?
I am about to echo what everyone else has said for the most part but I seriously can't believe that they snubbed so many riveting performers/shows.
Biggest snubs (in my opinion):
Daniel Radcliffe - He proved that he had the acting chops to leap beyond Harry Potter. He was amazing on stage, and I am seriously shocked that he wasn't nominated. He should have won the Tony.
Susan Blackwell and Heidi Blickenstaff - I love these girls, and I was so sorry to see that neither of them were nominated. They both deserved it, each in their own way.
[title of show] - I really wish that this show would have gotten nominated for Best Score and Best Musical along with its Best Book nomination. Here's hoping that Hunter goes home with a statue. He really deserves it. This show was one of the most touching theatrical experiences of my life. It really speaks to anyone looking to achieve their dreams.
Megan Hilty and Stephanie J. Block - I really love these girls, and thought that they both gave extremely strong performances in 9 to 5. I'm sorry to see that the committee didn't like the show, but these two girls shouldn't have been snubbed on account of that.
I didn't really have a problem with Constantine, or with Rock of Ages being nominated. Good for them! I'm just sorry that the others had to be shunned when they were so good.

You had better believe the TV producers of the Tonys are none too happy 9 TO 5 wasn't nominated. I wouldn't be surprised if turns into another debate, like LEGALLY BLONDE, etc.
Mactor is absolutely right.
That's why "A Catered Affair" (gay character) got all those nominations over "In the Heights" (no gay character) last year.
