Nice bump for Two Strangers. I hope it continues bumping up.
The seating capacities for LIBERATION and TWO STRANGERS tell you all you need to know about this week. Salivate at the New Year’s figures! Salivate!
This Black Sunday we said goodbye to BEETLEJUICE, WAITING FOR GODOT, Jane Krakowski, Ben Schwartz, Tabitha Lawing, and Shaina Taub (for now).
Interesting that STRANGER THINGS had one of the biggest drops last week, but it’s still in a great place and future spinoffs of the Netflix series + a proshot should keep it there for years to come.
Hopefully the winter doldrums aren’t too brutal for Broadway this time around.
That drop in grosses for “Wicked” is crazy.

Has a proshot been announced for ST?
This is the first winter in a while in which nothing really seems in imminent danger of closing before spring. Interesting that in a season in which a lot of focus is on the lack of new musicals, Broadway as whole seems to be doing very well.

Take that, people who say "broadway is dying"
Not officially but i saw online that there’s dates blocked off in February and the rumor is that’s when they’re filming it.

9 perfs last week vs. 8 this week accounts for a chunk of it.

I remember the days when a show crossed a million in grosses it meant that it was doing extremely well. Now it feels like that new number is $3million. But in those days, paying $100 for a ticket was expensive, now that is a bargain!

Stranger Things getting filmed.

Out of 33 shows, 26 of them grossed over $1 million.

My point I was trying to articulate is that, $1mill isn't the safe bet it once was. It used to be impressive to see that number next to any show. Now if it's anything less you're in trouble.

I've not seen it obviously being on the other side of the world but I enjoyed the London cast recording so I hope it does turn into this season's little show that could.
Also, can anybody advise if one of Aaron's unscheduled performances out was last week or if they were all in the previous week for Chess.

The latter is arguably why this season doesn't have a ton of new musicals coming in. Lack of available venues due to how well a majority of productions are currently doing commerically.

I suspect it is due more to the number of major flops last season, some despite solid reviews, that has made investors more anxious than they have been for a long time.

i don't see any long-running shows in danger at this point. Maybe we'll judge in a month or so. There's likely to be some openings by the summer.
It appears everyone got their nice little boost for NYE. However, the following weeks are going to likely look a lot more dour.
Re: Stranger Things - All I see is 2/18 blocked off as having no performance (aside from the usual Mondays). Good for them for getting their gross up, but they are FAR from looking like they are gonna settle in for the long haul. Before the holidays and the Season 5 release, they were barely paying the bills, and only ever got roughly 60% of their 1.5M breakeven for months.
Netflix has played the long game and poured money into this show to keep it running, but if they have a major dropoff during the winter, I see it gone by the summer. I highly doubt they these new spinoffs in the can already to bolster the brand.
A proshot also makes no sense to me if only because it’s a truly LIVE experience that is going to get flattened on TV and disincentivize people from going to it in person

I disagree, I think a STRANGER THINGS proshot could have a Hamiltonian effect and actually get more people interested in seeing it live.

Hamilton is also performer and material-driven, not spectacle/effects driven. On top of that, Hamilton was already so far profitable by then that it didn’t matter when they dropped the proshot. Unless they do that proshot as a live telecast and immediately release it for viewing, waiting months to clean up and edit it is not going to help a show on borrowed time

Costs are indeed going up, but at the same time, looking at Wikipedia, the last two seasons each had more new musicals (23-24 had 15, 24-25 had 14) than any other season since 1981.

Ah, yeah that makes sense
I don't think Stranger Things is quite in the clear yet. They dipped just below 90% capacity in a major tourist week while final season hype is still going strong with the big finale episode having just aired. Given all that, they really should have been able to sell out (or get close to it).
I do think a proshoot could help business a bit, but it will take time for that to get edited and released if it is indeed shooting in Feb. So it isn't going to help them through winter. The spin-off series is probably a solid 2 years away from being released since its still being written. So they can't count on that as a sales boost anytime soon. It will last longer than anticipated, but their weekly nut is just SO high...
