Happy trails to DEATH BECOMES HER, GIANT, THE FEAR OF 13, Kara Young, and Sarah Bowden.

Our numbers are meh here, but they should be even worse next week - Fourth of July weekend combined with a damaging heat wave that may give NYC its first 100-degree day in 14 years.

Grosses down 7% from this week last year. The shows that have been doing well remain doing well, but everything else is taking a hit and a number seem to either be in freefall or plateauing at unsustainable grosses.

I can’t imagine that Two Strangers makes it past Labor Day. What a shame for such a charming and lovely little show.

Just 5 weeks in, but we’re down by over 10% this fiscal season so far.

It has fine WOM, regardless of whatever one may think of it themselves.

Not seen the stage show but did watch the TV show. Its quite a niche show, its very much one big 'in joke' that you need to know the golden age of musicals quite well to fully get and appreciate. And that audience is more limited. Especially these days

I'm surprised it's only 10%. People are losing jobs left and right and new jobs are scarce and many come with a lower pay. Consumer confidence is very low especially in big cities like NYC where lucrative tech and finance careers are disappearing due to AI and horrible economy overall. Rich audience alone cannot sustain Broadway and us middle class folks who kept this machine going for decades aren't doing so well.

Do we know the running costs over at Gatsby? Based on where the grosses have been coming in, I’m a bit surprised it hasn’t announced closing, especially since it’s such a big cast. And a big theater!

Schmigadoon didn't break a million until they won the Tony, and have been sustaining there since. Plus, these last 3 weeks are the best capacity numbers they've had their whole run. I don't know what a bigger bump would look like in this economic landscape, where most shows are actively losing money.

I am rooting for The Jellicle Ball so hard, but I'm starting to think they'll end up closing on Labor Day weekend. They really needed that revival win to boost them through the end of the year. I'll be bitter about it forever! 😭

Six grossed more than Chicago?

At least this weekend is the last World Cup game until the 19th.

Matteo Lane didn't do much for Chicago's grosses.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Short of them absolutely tanking or investors pulling themselves out, I think they will likely keep running until January. They have been at or slightly above their weekly breakeven ($850-900K) for most of the run so far, though I agree that the Tony was really needed to give them a swift kick upward into safer territory. The herd of shows is thinning and CATS is also nixing Sundays and doing Monday night starting next week, so they might pick up residual audiences from that.

While not very profitable, I still think that the very low overhead for TWO STRANGERS is very similar to MINCEMEAT in that it’s a very cheap show to run and even in leaner weeks, it’s still landing a little more toward the black than the red.

I agree that this coming week is probably going to be brutal for most since the heat will keep people away and the holiday weekend takes out the most profitable day of the week (Saturday) and most shows are doing a Friday Mat/Sunday Eve replacement. Some of these long runners feel like they are just open out of spite, like SIX. I thought GATSBY would’ve folded a while ago, but somehow they remain open and the producers are throwing money into it. Gotta respect the hustle.

I also REALLY love that Rocky Horror, despite two sudden cast departures - having two understudies part of the week, then one understudy and a new cast member the latter half the week, they still managed to break the house record at Studio 54. I consider it a win for Team Sherie Rene Scott! (Her first performance on Friday was entirely sold out)

I will say that I am curious as to what will happen with Rocky Horror after 7/19, if there are any more cast changes and how that will affect sales. Part of what drove demand was the scarcity of tickets since it was supposed to be a limited run. Now that they have extended to November, I wonder if there will be a softening point in the future like other shows are showing now

When will further cast changes be announced?  I am going on 7/26.

I bet they have some aces up their sleeve for replacements.  Hopefully some cast with more professional cred to enhance the show.

Why do you constantly impugn people with established careers just because you don’t like their work? There was never anybody in the cast who wasn’t an established professional.

I have a friend who is an investor in Mincemeat and he claims that they have yet to receive any money back as the show just manages to cover its expenses each week. The belief is that the profits will come later on as the show is perceived as a hit that runs into multiple years. I'd guess that Two Strangers and other shows feel the same way.  At least its making money for the cast and crew as they wait and hope.

Is it safe to say now that Wicked has permanently softened? Not that long ago it seemed like one of those shows that would literally run forever.

I'm a bit surprised Moulin Rouge hasn't picked up more as it heads towards its end of summer closing. I'm sure it will once August rolls around.

Regarding the Schmigadoon bump, I think it's pretty solid. Not an Outsiders level bump but it's doing way better than it was before its win and hanging in strong territory.

Well, WICKED's ticket sales were between $2 - 2.5 million in most of the weeks before and after the first film's theatrical release (when the hype was real). A middling Part II did some damage though.

It's been a highly unusual time for them these last few years or so, and folx may have had enough at the moment because of both movies and how ubiquitous they were. Still, the show can weather this storm as their pre- and post-Part I numbers (as well as MANY a holiday season in years past) can compensate for weaker stretches. They made their money back long, long, long, long ago.

I wouldn't panic yet, WICKED should be fine.

Could we be entering a January 2009 moment this summer with mass closings across the board? I hope not.
