What is Once Upon a One More Time holding out for? Their numbers are just abysmal.

Unless the show can magically turn it around sometime soon, it will be yet another flop in the Marquis Theatre. It begs the question: is it purely coincidental that flop after flop has occupied that theater for the past 20 years, or is there something about that venue that just makes it uniquely difficult for shows to do well there?

Even though it is not amazing… I am honestly surprised how poor OUAOMT’s run has been. I would have thought it would have bigger numbers at least for a few months, but it has just not done well at all.

Once Upon a One More Time is in serious trouble. A pretty good week for everything else including the closing shows though you can see why NYNY is closing.

I don’t think there’s anything about the Marquis that makes it difficult for shows to succeed. Hell, prior to the 2000’s (and even a few times throughout the 2000’s) it hosted a bunch of successful shows. Gypsy and Annie Get Your Gun revivals, Thoroughly Modern Millie, etc.

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

Why would this hideous production do any better? The word of mouth is finally catching up to it. I'm frankly surprised it makes anything at all.

I definitely want to see it before it would announce a closing-any predictions? Maybe by Labor Day?

I would be shocked if it's open past Labour Day. I could see it pulling a NY NY and closing with a week's notice. Those grosses are pretty dire.

Based on grosses, OUAOMT clearly has to be announcing closing next. Then maybe Beautiful Noise for Sept closing?

BTTF this season's MJ or will it peter out?

We'll see what happens with HLL and SLIH the next few weeks given their high weekly running costs.

Nice to see Shucked and Akimbo holding fairly steady post-Tonys! For a season that looks like a lot of revivals coming in, it's nice to see these 2 originals doing well.

I don't think you can blame the venue exclusively. The Nederlander, Gershwin, and Minskoff have all been "flop houses" at one time but found success with RENT, WICKED, and LION KING.

Is the Marquis acoustically dead and a nightmare to get in and out of? Yes. But that's not really a factor in how a show plays there (the laughs carried just fine for BJ). And if you have a producer with any weight in selecting their house, they'll want the Lunt or Simon or Palace instead...which is funny that this one is produced by Nederlander themselves.

I'd like to know how things would have gone if this and & JULIET opened in reverse order. Juliet is just eating its lunch.

Did Gypsy and Annie make any money? Millie flopped. I definitely think this theatre makes it difficult to house a hit. It’s such a tacky space and it’s not easy for a tourist to find.

Yep, I do think & Juliet and even Moulin Rouge to be honest have that market tapped out and there wasn't room for another poppy jukebox show. But if the situation was reversed, I'm not sure because & Juliet is a superior show too.

I would see it sooner rather than later, it will be lucky to last through September. The Marquis is a weird theater with little hallways and the narrowest escalator known to man but it's attached to a hotel, so you would think it would be extremely convenient for tourists to attend.

Evita and Beetlejuice were not massive failures but I get what everyone is saying about the space. It seems cursed.

I don't think Here Lies Love stands much of a chance without Salonga, but we'll see. That could also be toast by Labor Day.

Well, I'll be. That bird really did it.

The Drowsy Chaperone and On Your Feet both had decent runs there too. I'm not sure it's earned the designation of being a flop house.

I hate the Marquis as much as everyone else but need to push back on the above. It has a massively visible Marquis from both 45th and 46th (directly next to Hamilton) and it previously had signage on 7th too. I don't think the physical space of a contemporary-looking Broadway theatre is going to have any meaningful impact –– positive or negative –– on an audience's enjoyment of a show, especially not tourists. (Guessing there might also be some unique marketing partnership opportunities to reach guests staying at the Marquis?) The Beaumont is hardly nicer-looking, with its understated interior, tight legroom, and walls adorned with lockers...except instead of being in a hotel, it's at Lincoln Center.

In the same way that if a show flops at the Cort or Lyceum, it has little to do with the location: nobody had trouble finding those theatres when Denzel Washington or Larry David played there.

I think the Marquis’ sheer size means it’s only really suitable for larger musicals, which are more expensive and more prone to closing at a loss. Looking at the list of productions that have been there since it opened in 1986, the overwhelming majority have closed within a year- and nothing has beaten the run of the first production in the space, Me and My Girl.

The Marquis is arguably easier to find than some theaters precisely because it is part of the Marriott Marquis complex.

Definitely looking like a massive bust at this point unless sales start to pickup.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Guess I'm in the minority, but I love the Marquis. I find it accessible and comfortable.

The real issue is that it hasn’t had a mega-hit.  As previously pointed out, the Minskoff, Gershwin, and Nederlander were once cursed.  The Nederlander could be heading back to that status because of its lousy location.  Personally, I would rather see a show in the Marquis than the other two theaters.  In the Minskoff, the first row center of the mezzanine feels like you’re midway up the mezzanine of, say, the Saint James or the Shubert…and the Gershwin is worst of the three in that respect.  Hell, the Mark Hellinger might still be with us had A Chorus Line opened there instead of the Shubert.

Lea Salonga, who sold no tickets in Allegiance and Once On This Island and Flower Drum Song???

That show needs to grow but it has started in a decent place and it's too early to tell what the appetite is. They have reviews they can work with, but word of mouth could be divided (especially depending on the age of the mouth). It might not ever recoup, but I expect to see it around for a bit.
