Broadway has survived the Great Depression, wars, NYC's near-bankruptcy in the 70s, AIDS, 9/11, Hurricane Sandy, COVID, but, yeah, sure, let's call it based off of this week's grosses.
But can it survive the policies implemented by the second Trump administration causing international tourism to go down as well as the overall economy due to tariffs and unemployment??? I really don't know...

Sure, let's hope Briadway will survive the most demented, harmful, anti-American fascist dictatorship this country has ever seen. Maybe the next democratic president will still be able to pull the US out of the hole, after Republicans tank the economy, as they always do. One can hope there will be another president who doesn't hate and is willing to harm America as the current one.

Poppycock.
The business model, though - that's going to need some evolution. Down with the gatekeepers, up with culturally vital new shows."
I'm sorry but how are we gonna get culturally vital new shows in an economy like this?
Individual weekly grosses tell one story: the story of that week. Before pulling a chicken little, we need more information.
if you look at BWW’s line graph comparing this week to the previous few years, you will notice every year has had a steep drop during this week. In fact, the grosses for this week over the last several years have all been similar. The difference this year is that the grosses were higher in the previous week, making the fall appear worse- but taken as an aggregate of the summer overall, this has been the pattern for this time of year. And fwiw, the decline for this week in 2023 was substantially worse.

Good God. Truly the most insane take. Of course it's going to survive.
It's interesting how some shows crashed and burned while others held up just fine and it doesn't seem to totally line up with new vs. old or family/teen vs. not.
Time is ticking for Hell's Kitchen and Gatsby. I also know Six is cheap to run but I feel like it's gonna transfer Off Broadway sooner rather than later.
I kept thinking Netflix will keep Stranger Things running into the spring and possibly summer but I really don't know if it's worth keeping open just to see if the final season helps it at all.
I'm stunned by the fall for The Outsiders. That is by far it's lowest in a very long time. Was Brody Grant that much of a draw? The other worst performers of the week IMO were Aladdin and & Juliet (and of course Jeff Ross and Cabaret).
On the flip side, MHE must be thrilled with those numbers given the controversy and Darren Criss not being there. Great end to a great run for John Proctor and Oh Mary continues to amaze.

Broadway will survive as long as American society survives intact. And although I think that's very likely, I don't think I'd use the phrase "of course."

Trump would have fired the numbers reporter for these shows.

Thanks for the quote, hopefully Broadway Week can get things back up...

Chicken little? Must be nice not having your job outsourced or automated. Or not being one of hundreds of thousands being laid off. Broadway is sustained by its audience, and audience is hurting right now. There are entire industries that are being shuttered because of destructive Trumps policies. What makes you think Broadway is any different? Maybe Blackrock buying theaters will be Broadway's last hope

Looks like a money laundering operation, tbh
There’s always money in the banana stand.

I am looking at data on this very website, literally years of it. Data you yourself could look at. It’s a colorful line graph. You’d like it, I think- the lines even go down a lot.

no it won't. new musicals and revivals will continue. We will still have the big money classics staying afloat like The Lion King, Wicked, Hamilton. I just don't think we will see every Broadway theater full and there will be more vacancies. Lots of shows are in trouble now: Hadestown, Book of Mormon, & Juliet, Hell's Kitchen, Six, Gatsby. Stranger Things & Harry Potter are probably gone by the end of the year.

Yeah, it's over after next year. The Tonys no longer exist, all the theater actors will evaporate, and all the theaters will become Dave's Hot Chicken.
TOTALLY.

Has Moulin Rouge been above a million at all since Wayne Brady and Taye Diggs joined the cast? Or at all this summer?
Do you think most shows in danger make it to the new year, or will a lot of them close before/during holidays? (I feel like more closed before the holidays last year and I was surprised they didn't wait until January).

With such a small amount of new productions this fall and many looking grim, I agree that Broadway may have a very sad winter coming up
That CABARET number is PAINFUL considering they were able to pull in that much over one or two performances this time last year.
I’m also kind of shocked that ART has had such a blockbuster start, considering it just sort of dropped in unexpectedly. I also thought Corden would’ve been more of a drawback (even with the draw of Harris and Cannavale), but maybe Broadway is forgiving him(?) - it’s still too early to tell what the long term wins will be."
The average person doesn't remember Corden's big ego-driven faux pas. They remember laughing their heads off at One Man, Two Governors, and enjoyed watching Car Pool Karaoke episodes on You Tube. Some even stayed up to watch his tv show or recorded it for another time.

I imagine business for Harry Potter will probably improve as soon as Tom Felton begins his run.

You are probably right but I just don't see it. He has essentially done nothing since the series ended (certainly anything of note) and I don't see why people would buy tickets just to see Draco Malfoy all grown-up. But I have been wrong before, so we will just have to see. It has been a while since I saw the show, and I don't really remember...does adult Draco even have much to do?

I have never seen such a low average ticket price for The Lion King. Has it gone onto TKTS recently? If not, where are people getting tickets at these prices?
The drop that surprised me the most was The Outsiders. I would imagine that, for its run to date, it has probably averaged close to 100% capacity (because the '102.2%' SRO numbers offset the rare non-sellout performances). Such a dramatic drop is hard to understand. I doubt that Brody Grant's absence had anything to do with it. I guess it is possible that high schoolers and college student returning to school (with a temporary loss of school driven sales due to the first week of school) could explain it. When I saw it, half the theatre attendees were under 25. If that theory is remotely correct, then it should jump back pretty quickly as the school year settles in.
I have to believe that, unless the rumors that Jeremy Jordan is returning to close the show are true, Gatsby should cut its losses and close. (Of course The Outsiders 'theory' could also apply to Gatsby, but it was already running out of steam).

I just saw someone on Reddit claim Lion King was on TKTS last week.
