Broadway Vets You’d Love to See Become First-Time Tony Nominees

I see film aficionados post on social media all the time about veteran actors they’d love to see become first-time Oscar nominees. I thought I’d ask a similar question regarding veteran Broadway actors.

Of those who’ve been around for a while, but have never been Tony nominated before, who would you most like to see get one someday?

Steven Pasquale is the first who came to mind.

Her moment will come, but there's an alternate universe where McKenzie Kurtz is a 2x nominee.

Lorin Latarro might be the most in-demand choreographer who's never been nominated (and should probably have at least two at this point).

Lots of character actors who've never been nominated:

  • Michael Potts
  • Elizabeth Marvel
  • Sally Murphy
  • Michael McKean
  • Edward Hibbert
  • Mark Linn-Baker
  • Austin Pendleton has only been nominated for directing, not acting
  • Arnie Burton and David Greenspan (their best work has been Off-Broadway)
  • Wallace Shawn, but he has never acted on Broadway!

THREE SUMMERS OF LINCOLN is still slated to come to Broadway this season (although they haven’t announced yet, so I think there may be pause). I saw it at La Jolla and he was utterly fantastic, vocally powerful, and definitely worthy of a nod.

Here are my choices:

Sierra Boggess
Katie Rose Clarke
Megan McGinnis
Paul Alexander Nolan

I’d also love to see Julie Benko get more opportunities of opening a Broadway show in a principal role and potentially get a Tony nom. Lastly…

I’d love to see Aaron Tveit actually nominated in a category with fellow nominees.

After seeing him at the Jellicle Ball last night, I think I honestly would like to see a nomination for Wayne Brady in something. He has a great track record on Broadway so far, but has never originated a role - likely because his commitments to Let’s Make A Deal prevent long term engagements.

He did originate The Wiz, but...we don't talk about that production.

The movie version of The Wiz has some of THE MOST elaborate and intricate production and costume design ever committed to celluloid. I really would love if they'd hire Qween Jean to costume a future revival or film project. Yet with the recent revival and television live event, I don't think it's a property we're soon to revisit culturally. The tour was a joke and a half physically with great talent.

Jeffrey Karasarides, I second Katie Rose Clarke.  I'll also add an earlier Merrily We Roll Along veteran, Jim Walton.  Also Greg Keller, who I thought should have been nominated for Yellow Face.
