Exactly. Here's only a slightly more recent article.

This is Not Good news. There has yet to be a bonafide hit on Apple TV that has broken into the cultural conscious the way Netflix shows do weekly. Even HBO Max is struggling. Damn, that’s a shame.

It's not anywhere near Netflix but it's also much newer than Netflix. And everyone in my orbit keeps talking about how much they love Ted Lasso (which as picked up several awards for its star already). There was once a time when Netflix had only one original show everyone was talking about (House of Cards). I think comparing AppleTV+ one year into their launch against Netflix nearly a decade after they started producing original content is a very unfair comparison.

Let's try to keep this in context. The subject is not what AppleTV might become some day; it's what AppleTV provides CFA in 2021, which is not much.

That's just not true. It provides it anonymity!

It’s promising that the major streaming services are showing an interest in Broadway proshots. Hopefully that means more will be preserved in this way, especially with the original casts that very few of us are able to see.

I think the issue that some of us are pointing out is that Apple TV does not have a significant subscription base...at least not compared to Netflix, Amazon, Disney+, and Hulu. And as I said in a previous post, Come From Away isn't going to attract subscribers like Hamilton did. It simply doesn't have the same cachet. Other than press releases on entertainment sites, who's really going to know about its release to even search for it? Mainly theater fans. On Netflix or Amazon they'd have a bigger opportunity for streaming,  and a more likely road for promotion as well

False. Apple TV and Hulu both have 40 million subscribers. It's a major streaming service and it's just going to get bigger. This is a great move for the production.

Disney+ launched two weeks after Apple and has 100 million subscribers. It is not a secret Apple TV is truly under performing as the market continues to become overstated with streamers. Hell, Apple TV offered to buy the new James Bond movie for *$300 million dollars* and still got denied.

Will be very interested to see the Nielsen report numbers comparing Come From Away on Apple and Diana on Netflix. Going to make me very sad when 10x the amount of people see Diana instead of the brilliance of CFA.

I can't fathom why you would say any of the above.

Seriously? This is what you have as a response? You post demonstrable false info, you get called on it, and then tell the person who called you out to move on? Rich.

Netflix famously doesn't report viewing data. Most streamers don't, unless they're bragging. Industry reporters tried to determine the success or draw of HAMILTON by reporting how many new subscribers signed up for Disney+ prior and just after it premiered there. Beyond that, there's no data.

Do you think $300 million for a Bond movie is a lot? Because Skyfall grossed over *$1 billion* nearly a decade ago. Spectre did almost $900 million. Apple's offer doesn't even cover the production budget of No Time to Die.

Just to add a little clarification, Apple did indeed show interest in licensing  No Time To Die , but no offer was made and the reason it didn't go through wasn't because MGM turned them down for some perceived lack of prestige - MGM wanted between $600 and $800 million dollars for a one-year licensing streaming deal and Apple and Netflix indicated they weren't willing to pay more than $400 million. It's certainly not because they can't afford it - they absolutely could if they wanted to - it's that Apple (and even Netflix) didn't think the movie was worth more than around $400 million.

MGM's Costly 'No Time To Die' Dilemma

As for Come From Away, I doubt Apple expects it to be a Hamilton-type draw. Instead, it'll be another notch in their growing number offerings

The issue isn't about Apple. I don't think anyone here cares about their success (except Sutton Ross). The question is why would the show's producers sell to Apple, when it doesn't have the same reach as the other streamers, and isn't trending upwards at the same rate as other bottom tier streamers (many of which are on the rise, such as Peacock and HBOMax).

I think that's right. I also don't think Apple made any significant expenditure to acquire it since it's pretty obvious the production was running out of options. They decided to shoot it and then went shopping for an outlet. This is closer to the case of a second or third tier cast recording than anything else, except the production cost is obviously much greater.

ETA: @Fosse, I think the answer is summed up by "beggars can't be choosers."

They also use the number of app downloads as well as social media mentions. There is certainly a lot of room for error. But it seems the industry accepts this methodology. I'm skeptical, but I don't care all that much. I would think it really only affects a series which relies on viewership for renewal. They can cancel an unpopular show...but a movie is a one-shot chance.

Agreed. Since Come From Away isn't exactly a super well-known property, it's likely that there weren't many networks or streamers banging down the door in a fierce bidding war for the streaming rights.

Would the producers even care how many views it gets? Once one of these streaming services pays for the rights, do they continue to pay royalties based on number of views? Seems like the producers would go with whoever offered the biggest purse.

I answered this question a few days ago in this thread. I will cut and paste it for you: I also don't think Apple made any significant expenditure to acquire it since it's pretty obvious the production was running out of options. They decided to shoot it and then went shopping for an outlet. This is closer to the case of a second or third tier cast recording than anything else, except the production cost is obviously much greater." I'll add that yes I expect there will be some back-end settlement. Apple took it because they are in need of content so it was, in that sense, mutually beneficial. But Apple is not Disney (or Netflix or HBO or Hulu etc) and CFA is not Hamilton. I am on record thinking that this was an irrational thing for the production to do and may well kill the show's chances of survival. We shall see. I wish them the best.

If nobody's gonna see it on Apple, why would it affect the show's chances of survival?
