There's one date on which I could see this show during an upcoming visit, and they recently added front row orchestra seats to the Telecharge Offers site for that performance. How was the stage height and width - any neck strain or side-to-side scanning?

The stage is low, and the orchestra pit is between it and the seats. The top of the conductor's head was directly in front of AA 107, where I was sitting, but I didn't find it obtrusive. No neck strain whatsoever, and I don't recall having to scan side-to-side a great deal. This was my seated view:

If it's only pretty close to Frozen, that's not high praise...

I wish you were right; however, if the show gets the mixed reviews that this board seems to be predicting, I don't think it will last very long, especially if MFL gets materially better reviews, which also seems likely.  Lack of Tony love won't help either...I can't imagine this getting very many noms, even in this awful season, based on the mixed opinions here.  Inferring from all that I have read, t doesn't sound like it will get any design noms, no director nom, maybe no leading noms; on the plus side, choreography, supporting actress seem likely...if a major revival does only get a few noms in an awful season, that will hurt...I think lack of Tony nomination respect is worse for business than not winning best musical or best revival.

In order to return its investment, the show is going to need to gross a million a week for a couple of years (assume low $700K breakeven).  I am betting that the producers have already concluded they are not making money on this one.

(I have to acknowledge that I have not seen either yet; will see MFL and, probably, Carousel, in late May, early June).

I saw it about 3 weeks ago and thought it was utterly magnificent. It was one of the best nights I ever had in the theater for a musical anywhere in my experience. The singing was fantastic across the board. The set design and overall concept was so beautiful and stunning. There were maybe two odd choices made by the director but I don't know specifically what the reason was for them, nor do I care because everything worked wonderfully. I heard some people are critical of this production on these chat boards, and I find that unbelievable because I thought the production was completely riveting and Stellar on all levels. The dancing and choreography and energy of all the cast members was fantastic. Being that I was in a house seat up close, my only complaint was that the show seemed a bit over-amplified, because I only heard the sound coming from the giant speakers above me. Oh and by the way the orchestra sounded like the New York Philharmonic. It's a huge Orchestra and they just sounded incredibly great

Miles2Go2 said: "Hello all. I was just in NYC in November and I had thought I’d wait a full year to return for my usual trip where I cram in as many Broadway and off-Broadway shows as possible in between museums, great meals and power shopping. However, with the shows (Angels in America, Three Tall Women, Carousel, My Fair Lady) that opened recently or will open soon (plus Once on This Island, which sadly didn’t make the cut in November), I’m thinking I should try to find a financial way to return sooner especially since some of these shows will likely not be open in November this year. I have never seen any filmed or staged production of Carousel before. This was pretty high up on my list, but all the chatter on here has me rethinking that. I almost never can see everything on my list. All of this is pretext for my question. If this production doesn’t make significant improvements to the show during previews, do you think it’s still advisable for this to be someone’s first introduction to the show or should I just watch the movie instead? Thanks in advance for all helpful replies."

I hope you've seen it by now. Do not miss this production, especially if you've never seen one before. I saw the 1995 Lincoln Center production, which was terrific, but this production is even better in several ways. The first being the singing and the orchestra. You will simply not ever hear a production with better singing and a greater sounding orchestra on Broadway. I urge you not to listen to these strangely negative comments on this thread. For you to miss this production especially if you've not seen it before would be a travesty. The choreography and the dance numbers and the singing and dancing by the cast are unprecedented in my long life experience. There are several numbers that will bring the house down. The audience absolutely loved every minute. They got a full standing ovation right away. But that's nothing extraordinary these days because every show on Broadway gets standing ovation no matter how good it is. But the singing is superb throughout. And the ensemble can all sing and dance. The ensemble sounds like the Metropolitan Opera chorus. That's how good they are. Yet they can dance ballet at the same time. Renee Fleming singing You'll Never Walk Alone was divine. It is a treat that you will rarely get on Broadway. Jessie Mueller sings beautifully throughout. And although the Carrie was a bit nasal, she had an amazing voice. Joshua Henry's voice is a massive instrument, he's a bit too much of a lower baritone to really nail the upper notes perfectly, but they were just fine, and still very impressive in the upper register. The direction is exquisite. The set design is amazing beyond words. I urge you and anyone reading this not to believe these comments criticizing the show, when most of the people who are making those comments haven't even seen the show. The carousel set up during the Overture is pure brilliance. I won't give it away. But I can tell you it is one of the most creative things I've ever seen done on the Broadway stage. And the production dance quality puts this even above that of the recent An American in Paris.

I thought it was one of the greatest things I've ever seen on Broadway. You will almost NEVER get a production of a glorious musical like Carousel done with fine singers and musicians. For the record, I saw the show about a month ago.

This prologue is on YouTube, and it is OUTSTANDING. The carousel moves me to tears when it starts turning along with the grand score.
"

It was one of the greatest openings to any show I've ever seen in my entire life. In some ways it was even more amazing than the Lincoln Center production in the 90s. The assembling of the carousel truly was ingenius. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise

snark rude comment. I agree that I thought she didn't sound good at all for this part. So the original commenter is certainly not the only one.

Is it safe to assume this production won't receive a 2018 cast recording? Shame, especially since this production features first rate singers across the board

I’m still hoping for one but I’ve definitely lowered my hopes of getting one, which is a shame as i loved the music and the cast

I’d love to see it happen, based on the voices involved. I think, though, with all of the controversy over the “missing numbers” from the production, a cast album of this production seems less likely. I hope I’m wrong.

My go-to recording is a mix of the London and Broadway revivals of the Nicholas Hytner production.

If this production doesn't get a cast album, this is officially one of the most disappointing things I've ever seen. Great cast that gets screwed up by terrible direction, but still manages to sing the score beautifully, but then doesn't recieve a cast album. Shoot me.

While I really hope this gets a cast recording, this feels all too similar to Shuffle Along's trajectory two years ago. What a damn shame too. This production might have not been a highlight this season for me, but I thought the cast really did the score justice (minus the cut numbers, of course).

Eleven Tony nominations this morning..... i guess your endless negativity held little to no sway to others, like me, who thoroughly enjoyed the revival. Does it mean they’ll win every category? Of course not. Phenomenal R&H score, beautiful and creative choreography from J Peck, top notch Ballet exports from the NYC Ballet including Amar R and Brittany Pollack, emotionally charged singing by Josh Henry, R Fleming, Alex G, and Lindsay M. Yes it’s a period piece and it is not without some hiccups but overall, they are relatively minor. It still commands standing ovations nightly and it is well worth seeing.

This kind of response is not at all helpful. Clearly, the previous poster wants to see the show. Clearly, you hate it. We get it. Enough already.

I've never seen a production of Carousel before, so I went in pretty blind, but I loved this. I thought it was a mostly stunning production. You can tell things were cut, but it didn't take away from me. The ending gutted me.

Can someone explain to me what the major cuts and "issues" were? I know it's been said before, but I don't want to read through all these pages.

You know, Schmuli, your responses are getting tiresome and are the equivalent of an obnoxious child waggling his fingers and going “Nyah, Nyah!” The biggest Home is how you simply just can’t let it rest that some people didn’t care for Carousel. So tell me this: what is about YOUR opinion that makes it moreimportant than anyone else’s?

Eleven Tony nominations. Wow. And this means what? Standing ovations every night? That means less-than-nothing. So tell me: why is your Love any more legitimate than my dislike for it?

Can someone tell me why their marquee says "Most Nominated Show of the Season" when that's not true...? It got 11 nominations, but SpongeBob and Mean Girls each got 12. And even if that weren't true, The Band's Visit and Angels in America got 11 as well, so...change your sign?

But even still, if you count up the nominations from all four, SpongeBob comes out with 35 (12 Tonys, 11 OCCs, 11 Drama Desks, 1 Drama League) while Carousel comes out with 32 (11 Tonys, 12 Drama Desks, 6 OCCs, 3 Drama Leagues). So saying they're the "Most Nominated Show of the Season" is empirically untrue.
