And now it was just announced today that the show will close on January 2.

Telling people not to test is so dangerous. If gay culture has taught us anything, it’s to know your status, whatever it is, so that things can be treated, prevented, and dealt with in a timely fashion."
Comparing the omicron variant’s reported effects on fully vaccinated individuals thus far to HIV is a deeply false equivalence. Again, if the effects on this variant in fully vaccinated individuals is a fever for a day or two, I don’t think testing is really a tenable solution anymore. If one person at a work place gets strep throat, they stay home. But the workplace doesn’t test absolutely everyone else for it, and others who are completely unaffected might show up positive if they were. Regardless, it’s not life or death. We are not in March of 2020.
Yes, SantaCon is a gross parade of douchebaggery for finance bros and bridge & tunnel folks. Yes, it's very possible people participated in caught and spread omicron. But, again, it seems clear by how quickly cases are spiking that no one event perpetuated this wave (and it seems unlikely to me that Broadway folks would be intermingling with SantaCon folks very much).
Re: shutdowns and omicron: we'll see the extent omicron plays into hospitalizations and deaths in a clearer way in the coming week or two. But while most people who are vaccinated and boosted will at worst just have a rough few days of illness, the issue is this virus is incredibly contagious. It wouldn't take long for someone to transmit it to someone who isn't vaccinated, or is immunocompromised, or has underlying conditions that put them more at risk of severe illness even if they are vaccinated. It's never just about "you"- it's about everyone you could potentially come into contact with, and then everyone they can come in contact with.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
And while I understand the lack of sympathy toward unvaccinated folks- and believe me, I'm running dry on it- I can say, as someone who lost a (vaccinated, mind you) loved one to COVID just this summer, this is not something you want to be cavalierly wishing on people. It is a truly an awful way to die.

Also lets not forget… these are the same broadway houses pre-covid , who wouldnt cancel a show if there was 1 foot of snow on the ground. They dont care about the patrons, all comes down to $$. Im sure NYS is funding all these closures or else they wouldnt willfully just shut things down like this.

Sad, of course, but unsurprising. The theatre was at most 25% filled this afternoon before the cancellation was announced. Not a good sign.

I’m honestly not even coming at it from a lack of sympathy angle. It’s just that those folks aren’t even allowed in Broadway houses. If they contract it in some twisted, elaborate way from a theater person, it’s because they are unvaccinated and going out in a place that doesn’t HAVE the safety restrictions that Broadway has. So I don’t believe unvaccinated folks should really be considered as they are simply not a part of the community and it’s patronage at the moment.
People have been packed together for weeks trying to catch a glimpse of the tree at Rockefeller Center. Seems like that situation is similar to SantaCon.

But they are all over the place in subways and places that actors have to go in too.
Broadway performer here who almost never comments on these boards but MUST chime in regarding this. To say unvaccinated people “shouldn’t be a part of the equation” is quite possibly one of the most reckless and ignorant things you could say. I have a baby at home who CANT be vaxxed because they are too young. The “equation” is much bigger than us doing a show for you. Many of us have families that we come home to after performing. To suggest that we should stop testing is ignorant and quite Trump-esque. And to add another note regarding people staying home if they are sick….that can’t be relied upon. The Broadway industry is notorious for pushing people to perform while sick and injured. We as performers are conditioned to push through almost EVERY illness and injury in the book so to think that someone who is sick can be relied upon to call out is also ignorant. Testing and confirming cases is the only way to force people who are ill to stay out of the building. I want to work. I have bills to pay. I love my job. But this is not just about the health of the people in the building, it’s also about the families we come home to.

All i want to know is… “have you been to a restaurant since being vaccinated”? If you haven’t then i dont have anymore questions. If you have, do you ask your waiter’s if theyve had a pcr test that day? Just wondering.

What a beautiful post. I am so very sorry that two awful posters are attacking unvaccinated people. There are people who simply cannot be vaccinated like you stated. You all have been through hell, your industry decimated and now you have to deal with a long, harsh Winter of tests, cancellations, and stress. Please keep yourself and your family safe. The primary person who is spreading lies and telling people that Covid is over is only here to enrage, hurt, and belittle people for being safe. Please ignore them forever like all of us smart people are doing. Like 45, he will be gone and forgotten shortly.
Yes. I’ve been to a restaurant but only outside and over the summer so I felt safer not knowing the status of my waiter or anyone else around. Not to mention, the last time I ate, outside, at a restaurant, the COVID numbers were very low and the vaccines were holding up pretty strongly against COVID at that time. We are currently in a surge where breakthrough infections are at an all time high. Not the same situation.

Babies are the least likely to contract or have any serious reaction to COVID-19. They are probably more at risk of other diseases not being tested for in your work place.
While some suggested we should just stop testing, that isn’t my take right now. But I do believe the current protocols need revision and will continue to need revisions as things change. As variants become less severe, it will make less and less sense to send asymptomatic people home, lest we tests for traces of every possible infection that can cause a few days’ fever and then cease to gather as a society. It is not Trump-esque to open up a conversation to the possibility that we may need to reimagine and reconsider if our tactics are working or not, and discuss at what point we will be able to let go of testing and understand that vaccinated individuals have to the immune systems to handle the disease.
I also don’t know the policies in place: does one test warrant a cancellation? Or are shows cancelling when too many people have tested positive to go on? Can we employ additional industry members to prevent any long term closures?

It only takes one time. Does anybody want to be that parent who exposed their child?
Kad - well stated and I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ve tried to stay mostly quiet largely because I’m no immunologist although I listen to them and believe what they say. But here I go.
A lot seems to depend on as Kad says what hospitalizations and Covid deaths look like for the weeks to come. Related to that, it also depends on whether Omricon becomes the dominate strain not just in NYC, but the United States. And if Omricon is the final dominant strain (or more likely, if the future strains are less dangerous to the vaccinated, immunocompromised, and unvaccinated alike).
Best case scenario is probably that Omricon indeed does become the dominant (and last serious) variant in the U.S. with little repercussion to the vaccinated & related to that, less Covid hospitalizations and deaths.
But we don’t know quite yet what the future holds. I saw in passing on the news this weekend that Israel is bracing for its fourth wave. And they’re a well vaccinated country. That’s worrying. But I also saw that while hospitals and hospital staff are currently overwhelmed, Covid hospitalizations are way down from a year ago. They are overwhelmed due to all the illnesses and they were delayed in getting treated at the height of the pandemic.
I believe the 7-day average for Covid deaths is around 1300/day. Will a more contagious variant (Omricon) that is less deadly result in less deaths as it takes greater hold or will it equal out to what we have with Delta? I don’t think anyone can predict that quite yet.
So I think caution is still prudent as inconvenient as it is. At least for now. We have under-vaccinated states (like my state of Oklahoma) and under vaccinated countries. My state wants us to believe we have no cases of Omricon yet (Riiiiight!) although every state around us has detected Omricon A tactful person would say that’s because Oklahoma is under-detecting and under-reporting. A less tactful person would say it’s willful ignorance. My last point is that we don’t quite know yet what will become of the unvaccinated populations of both the United States and the world. And I say this selfishly. Will the unvaccinated (and infected vaccinated) become incubators for less contagious, less dangerous variants (I sure hope so) or more contagious, more dangerous variants that evade our current vaccinations. The info on Omricon seems to be mixed: less dangerous (to the vaccinated), but more contagious & more likely to result in breakthrough infections among the vaccinated.
Having said all that, right now I’m still planning to keep my January 4-6 trip (none of my three planned shows have had a Covid-specific cancellation so far). If I get Omricon specifically on my trip, I figure I will have mild symptoms. But I’m still masking up here despite being boosted and largely avoiding indoor dining in my under vaccinated, largely unmasked state.
So I’m trying to be neither be Chicken Little nor an ostrich with its head in the sand.
