Cynthia Erivo EGOT

Surely she isn’t considered an actual EGT winner with only the Oscar to win? Didn’t THE COLOUR PURPLE get an Emmy for a brief performance on a TV show and wasn’t the Grammy also for THE COLOUR PURPLE. So Erivo can’t, or shouldn’t, be claiming herself as a EGT winner when she only really has a Tony.

EDIT: I’ve just read that the principle soloists of TCP were awarded the Grammy so I take back what I said earlier. She definitely has a Grammy and a Tony but I still say she doesn’t have an Emmy.

She actually might, but likely not for acting. She wrote and performed a song for the movie, so she might get the Oscar for that.

I agree that the Musical Performance in a Daytime category is quite excessive. They are essentially awarding folks Emmys for doing publicity. Because that's what those short performances are for.

I have a hard time seeing Erivo even getting nominated for Lead Actress for Harriet. The reviews are not great. And there are essentially 4 slots already sewn up in that category: Charlize Theron, Saoirse Ronan, Renee Zellweger, and Scarlett Johansson. Barring some shocking omission, that leaves one slot up for grabs and most pundits have Akwafina and Alfre Woodard battling over it, with a few opting for Lupita Nyong'o.

If Erivo does get nominated, it will probably be for Song. But since Song may just be the only nomination Harriet receives, winning the category will be an uphill battle.

Personally I feel that the category is excessive. I don't at all mean to undermine these three outstanding Broadway companies, but for them to win an award for simply showing up (in DEH's case, not even in costume)to a studio and perform a three minute number that they're already performing 8 times a week doesn't at all measure up to the accomplishment of working as a director/writer/actor/producer on a television program.

I agree completely. Especially about performers getting an award just for showing up and doing promotional press that is part of their contract. There is nothing new or special in those appearances that you can’t see on the stage, and that’s what the Tony’s are for. And tv appearances are always lower quality anyway.

I believe that if this category for the Emmy’s has to exist, it should only consider musical performances that are originally created for tv appearances (Super Bowl halftime shows, the production team behind Billie Eilish’s ‘bad guy’ on SNL), and press performances from ongoing broadway productions should not be eligible.

It’s also interesting that out of everyone from DEH that got a non-deserving Emmy, it didn’t go to the people that actually wrote the song that they performed - Pasek and Paul. This would have made them EGOTs.

Except the joke makes no sense! He's currently doing season 11 ofComedians in Cars Getting Coffee, he's been touring regularly and doing a monthly residency at The Beacon for years now, he does tons of charity events, etc. Just sayin'

Ugh. When they say nothing, they don't mean literally nothing. They mean nothing that compares to creating and starring for 9 years in one of the most iconic TV series in the history of the medium. It's just a joke in theory being told by a jealous comic. It's not an encyclopedia entry. It was never intended to be analyzed for 100% literal accuracy.

Yeah, it seems the buzz on this has cooled. She’s good in a decent movie but I wonder if the film has enough staying power to carry a relative unknown to a nomination.

I suppose when I’m trying to say is that Erivo being only an Oscar away from the EGOT cheapens the whole concept. Isn’t the EGOT supposed to be almost a recognition of a lifetime of work yet Erivo was given the G and T for simply simply turning up to work? I mean I don’t really appreciate it’s importance since I’m Scottish but Americans act like only legends can achieve EGOT status but these days it seems like anyone can.

Maybe we should stop thinking that the EGOT is a lucrative thing since it’s so easy so achieve now.
