The argument simply doesn'thold water."
I’m not really sure what the argument is. Frankly I am more curious with how his performance translates on screen . He has a tendency to come off as very self aware and mannered for the camera.

So did the entire cast of Grease but nobody cared. This isn't a Marvel movie, so it's not expected to make billions at the box office but I think it will be more popular than you think, and Ben Platt is a massive draw if selling out Radio City Music Hall is any indication. People relate to this story, obviously, considering how well it has done on Broadway."
Grease and DEH are two different types of movie musicals. If I am going to be preached at for 2 hours in a movie theatre, I think it should at least be done in the most realistic way possible.
I certainly agree Ben Platt has more "star power" than many other Broadway stars, but I think the film could have been just as successful without him starring in a role he should no longer be playing (in any medium).

Living in a world without constructive criticism, discernment, and opinions would be the type of abyss of nothing into which I would be shouting.

There’s a difference between constructive criticism and being bitchy and mean.

Agreed. Most of the people in this thread objecting to the trailer have been neither bitchy or mean.

On Twitter they have been awful . I am not a Twitter regular . Never got into it. I guess this is partly why.
What's funny about the trailer, was that there was an airborne shot where Evan is running through a field (during one of his songs) which it gave me Finian's Rainbow flashbacks. There's a similar airborne shot where Woody is running through a grassy field during "If This Isn't Love".

Most of the posts I'm seeing on Twitter are people discovering what the plot of Dear Evan Hansen actually is and being either grossed out by it or surprised it's not about a gay teenager who broke him arm. They are rather entertaining!

Exactly. Which 90% of these responses absolutely are. But, it's BWW so of course.

Totally. Yep. But here's a secret that people bitching about it don't seem to realize...you don't have to see it if you don't want to. If you think a movie is going to "preach at" you then don't buy a ticket. Simple.

But then they are robbed of being bitchy . Which sadly seems to be their joy.
God you're right. People who are so miserable they have nothing else to do but be bitchy and horrible about a film they haven't even seen it. Imagine that sh*t.

My point is that if a musical takes itself as seriously as DEH does, the lack of realism detracts from the message it is trying to convey. Grease does not take itself seriously, so the age discrepancies didn't bother me.

What shocks me is that you act as if you expected no one on a theatre message board to mention the horrible wig or how Ben Platt looks too old to play this role on film...

My only issue is that it seems to be nearly the ONLY things people are mentioning/discussing. Plus some people seem to be glomming on to this to finally unleash whatever animosity they already had toward DEH, Platt, P&P, etc. It’s hardly Cats-movie level creepiness…
And people have griped about way things like costumes, make-up, special effects, etc. have looked in trailers forever, only to have less of an issue when the end result is seen. Film marketing firms regularly brighten, speed up, kick up contrast, and otherwise tweak footage for trailers, making things look more garish or brighter than in the actual film; it’s easier to follow fast trailer edits when the shots are brightened. Doubt the interesting (haha) hair will change, but guessing his visible makeup/concealer won’t stand out nearly so much. (Hoping?)

I can't speak for others, but I enjoyed my experience of watching the stage version of DEH while simultaneously realizing that the show is certainly not the advocate for mental health that it claims to be. I think P&P wrote some really solid songs for the show.
However, I think the issue I have with the film casting of Platt is that the plot truly depends on the likability of a very flawed character whose only redemption is that he is young and struggling with mental illness. If an adult did the things Evan did in the show, he would automatically be labeled a sociopath. In order for tan audience to sympathize w/ Evan in the much less forgiving medium of film, the title character must clearly be a teenager. Ben Platt is clearly NOT a teenager.
My other issue is that even with the Platt casting, they did not do him any favors with the wig (at least, I believe it's a wig) and odd "de-aging" make-up. I would have preferred for him to look like his character from The Politician to what we have in the trailer.
Even comparing the trailer reaction to that of CATS is silly, because, while very few people thought that CATS looked good, there are a lot of people, myself included, who think the DEH trailer is great. I was surprised to see all the negative reactions, since I think the film looks better than I thought it would.
Not gonna lie, it's a pretty good poster. Good use of empty space, the gradient in the title going from blue to white to emulate the sky. Not crazy about the text of the letter, but it adds a layer of mystery, I guess.

The poster is well designed w/ the exception of the text of the letter, in my opinion.
I think something was done to Ben’s face & body with some AI/CGI tricks. If they didn’t do this, I’d ask why. It’s so easy to help age up/down. It’s worked for tons of films. Except the a-hole cut of Cats.
